Crisp edge, bargain price, fine grit,

This review is from: SE 5 pc. Professional Diamond File Set (180 Grit) (Misc.)
The set includes a flat plate, an equilateral triangular prism, an acute triangular prisim, a 30% circular chord, and a thin rod. All are tapered for about 2 inches to the tip.
The edges are moderately crisp and will score ceramic tiles quickly via edge or tip. These respond well to having a little bit of lubricant which helps move the very fine dust away from the workpiece. These files have red, vinyl covers on the handles. The vinyl sticks to the vinyl holder. A little annoying at first, but it keeps the files from poking through or sliding out. The handles are very stiff and durable. Even with my big hands they held up without flexing. None of these score an extremely fine line, but all are worth much more than the price asked. The price is a great bargain. Once you get really good, you might want a shorter taper with a sharper tip, or other shapes, or duplicates of your favorite shape. (The acute prism comes in very handy for scoring a long, deep line.) I highly recommend this for your first set, extra sets, bench set, gift set, etc.

Used it on every piece of chipped glassware I could find and did the job well and fast. Just remember to wash the glassware after as it is covered with micro shards of glass. Used the half round file as it makes a smoother surface than the full round!

If you ever need a diamond file (and you may not even know it), these are great to have around. I use them for smoothing glass chips in everything from drinking glasses to table tops. The are also invaluable for fine detail work such as modeling and various repair work. I own similar sets in cut files and the different shapes are really nice to have available. I am fairly picky about quality and these exceeded my expectations. I may buy the smaller sized set too.

I bought these hobbyist files rather than a glass chip repair tool to save money. It may have been a false economy, because this set really doesn't come with instructions on how to use them without damaging the glass. I have used them on both pressed glass and fine crystal, without harm, but instructions would have been nice, so I could know what tool to use and hos best to use it.

I am very pleased with the product. I use it for stones for jewelery, and to smooth inperfections in pottery. I don't know what the life span of it will be though.

they work very well. I use them to finish the edges on Copper. The rubber handles make them very comfortable to hang on to.

This is a set of small craft files in a variety of shapes which are very useful for doing detail work on just about any small wood or plastic project. They do tend to gum up easily and I would like to see them sharper to cut a little faster, but for craft projects they are great.

Cheap Chinese files,

These are the bigger brother to the 3*140*50mm size ceramics + tile + glass files, which are also offered by hobbytoolsupply
In my other review, I mentioned that I was not real impressed with the little files. True, they were only $6 - and that included free shipping - but I have to say I'm sure glad I didn't pay even a dollar more. Frankly, even at the low price, I am not sure they are worth the money. At least with the larger files (unlike with the smaller version), the red handles don't practically fall off in your hands. However, like the smaller version, these files also appear to be made from some type of pot metal. It has a cheap silver color to it. I don't know if it's some sort of cheap plating or what, but I'm almost embarrassed to put these into my tool chest. No wait, I take that back, I am embarrassed to put these in my tool chest. There do appear to be some diamond surface at the end, but I question how long it will say attached to the files or stand up to heavy use. I haven't used any of the files yet, but based on their apparent quality, I'm a little concerned they might snap and/or the diamond surface area might disintegrate during filing. Speaking of disintegrating, the plastic case is worthless and arrived torn on mine. Don't waste your money on these, even at $6... |
