I got this lamp because I have some detail painting that I needed to do. The thing was that I didn't really want to spend $60.00-$80.00 dollars for something I'm not going to use very often. Even though this lamp didn't have any reviews on it I decided to take a chance and boy am I glad I did! I received the lamp yesterday and man am I happy I didn't go out and spend all that money on another lamp! This lamp is fantastic! You know that saying, "Good things come in small packages?" Well, they were talking about this lamp when they wrote it. The top of the lamp lifts up-that's where the magnifier is-the light is a florescent bulb, but don't hold that against it. It is bright, but it doesn't hurt your eyes; as for the magnifier it's very powerful. Great for any detail work that needs doing from sewing to removing splinters! Get this lamp while the price is low! Wow! 5 Stars for the little lamp that could!

Work on electronics. Needed something to enlarge parts that are getting smaller as my eyes get weaker. This works great!

Diameter a bit disappointing,
Even though I paid attention to the dimensions and looked at my tape measure, when this light arrived I found the diameter to be too small for my purpose. The magnification is great, the quality of light and size of the base is great. I love the adjustability of the light head and overall the quality is good. The cover is great for keeping dust away but the lens is smaller than I anticipated and I found it hard to focus except in the very center. As you move your head/eyes or hands beneath, it is easy to lose focus on the object. I will keep this on my desk for reading those small fonts on bills, etc. but it will not be my craft light....the lens circle is too small.

This lamp is great, I could no longer use lower magnification and had to find something that would help me read my mail, books, etc. this is so neat, not only is it a magnifier it is a lamp. A two in one that works great for those who need that extra help seeing things. I love it. Thank you for a wonderful product that works in two different functions.

This is truely a 10 dollar lamp. The lens is plastic and the lens diamater is so small that you have to close one eye to look through it properly without seeing a double, out of focus image. Spend the extra money to but a real magnifying lamp with a glass lens and a larger diameter ring.

I looked long and hard and found this lamp,

This lamp can be used just as a lamp or you can flip up the "lid" and you have a great magnifier. I don't know how I got along without it, both for repairing jewelry or magnifying words on paper or in books. This lamp has a small footprint on your table or desk but it is sturdy and has a nice weighted base to hold it in place. I think I made a great choice.

Table Magnifier for Visually Impaired Mother in Law,

I bought this little lamp for my 98 year old mother-in-law, who is having trouble reading. The lamp works great if she is sitting at her desk. She would like to be able to use it while sitting in her recliner or in bed, but the flexible "stem" is really too short for that.

I have low vision, so the magnifying lens along with the bright light allows me to read very small print again. My only complaint is the base. It's too light and tips easily in some positions. Other than that, it's a very useful item at a reasonable price.

I had ordered two of these to illuminate and magnify some small, fairly low and flat stone sculptures. The main problem is that the magnifier is only in focus at about 2" away from what you're looking at. I'm also not convinced that it's really 5X magnification, and suspect that it's actually more like 2-3. The neck won't bend enough to get clear focus on something flat (such as paper) or less than ~2" high placed on the same level as the base, so you have to hold the object up under the lens, or position it on a small base/pedestal to make the magnification useful.
The other problem is that the bottom 5" of the neck is vertically fixed and doesn't bend (even though the illustration falsely shows it bending backwards from the base), and the reason is obvious - even with the restricted neck at full extension, the lamp can be knocked over with a feather, although there is no real danger as the bulb isn't halogen, and there is a protective clear plastic casting over the ring bulb. It does not have the "Heavy metal base for stability" as claimed. You could easily enough CA or epoxy flat weights to the bottom of the unit; there are four recessed phillips-head screws holding the two main body castings together, but it looks like the heads on two of mine are largely stripped by sloppy work at the factory, so I don't know if I could get them out to add weight inside the unit, although from the size of it I suspect there is enough room. If you're looking for close-up task magnification, I would suggest using a head-mounted magnifier or an "accordian/draftsman" style task light, which will allow much greater range and flexibility - i.e. you should be able to position it accurately over your work with the magnifier in focus. This is a very bright light and would be good for reading within a limited range -due to its low height (the nature of the neck doesn't allow extension of the head much beyond the base of the unit). I tried it as a computer light, but found it was actually so bright as to be distracting. It would be good for illumination of material to be keyboarded - IF you can keep it behind or enough to the side of your monitor so you don't get screen glare; angling the head of the lamp also helps. On the plus side, the 5 Watt flourescent bulb should be economical to run, although some reviews indicate general failure of the lamp within a short usage span. Since this was not shipped by Amazon, I've decided to keep them with the idea that I will find an eventual function for them (although not my original intended use), vs. the cost and hassle of return shipping. I also paid less than the current price, so felt they are decent value even with their restricted use. I'm not saying it's a bad lamp, but that the magnification function is severely limited by the focal length and the lamp's range is limited by the restricted neck and tippiness. They have generously included a hinged lid to the top of the magnifier lens, so you don't waste illumination upwards / in your eyes if not magnifying. This will be fine if you rarely need magnification and are willing to hold the item up under the lens, but this is in no way any sort of task or working magnifier lamp. |
