I cut and taped four state maps together and drove over 6,000 miles as I conducted my research for this book. My note-taking was done with a video camera, so I could remember in detail the look of each place. Many of the trips are on designated scenic highways and picturesque country roads, but the freeway is always nearby if you need to get home in a hurry. Nashville, Knoxville, Atlanta, and Birmingham mark the corners of the area I covered, and I included Chattanooga attractions too.
