Caution - metric threads,
By

This review is from: SE 28 pc. Wood burning Set (Misc.)
I gave this item only 3 stars based on the incomplete description. I ordered this set from American Science & Surplus. Unfortunately, there is no mention of thread size in the ad description. Use caution however, as this 28 piece tip set has metric (M4x.7) threads. I measured these with my thread gauges. They do not fit standard Weller (SAE #8-32) or Wall Lenk Corp. (#8-32) irons. They are sold alongside American Science & Surplus item #91006 (wood burning pen set). So, they probably fit that iron. It looks to be a nice set for the money but they have not been used yet because of the thread issue. Widget Supply has a similar set (advertised as having SAE #8-32 threads) for a few bucks more. I'll try those.
Review Update: I purchased the set from Widget Supply (advertised as having #8-32 threads) only to discover after receiving them that they too have M4x.7 threads. The American Science & Surplus set and the Widget Supply set are identical and are from the same manufacturer. The major diameters of the SAE #8-32 threads and the METRIC M4x.7 threads are the same but the thread count (TPI) is slightly different. Therefore, one will damage the threads of both the SAE iron and the metric tips if one forces the tips into the SAE iron. Due to variances (sloppy tolerances in the major diameter), some of the metric M4x.7 tips will screw down into the SAE #8-32 irons about 5 threads. If the thread length is short, the tip may actually go into the iron all of the way. However, tightening these tips further will damage both threads (tip and iron). After close examination I found that both sets had a couple of tips that were somewhat defective in their metal castings. These can be cleaned up with a little work with a file. In summary, unless you plan on ordering American Science & Surplus item #91006 (wood burning pen set) or you know for sure that your iron has M4x.7 internal threads, then I would recommend staying away from both of these tip sets. Further Update: I sent Widget Supply an email about the thread discrepancy and they refunded my money and stated that they would be changing the item description. Since I had already ordered and received the American Science & Surplus item #91006 (wood burning pen set)(30 watt with insulator handle and cooling fins) I had a pen that would accept both sets of tips. So, I declined Widget Supply's offer of the refund. Things have worked out for us and we are using both sets of metric M4x.7 tips. With the correct iron I wouldn't hesitate to purchase these tip sets again.

I postponed purchasing these tips after reading the previous review. I don't own a Weller burner, I have several Walnut Hollow as well as cheap Harbor Freight burners.
All my bits worked on all my burners. I took a chance and I'm glad I did. I can't speak for Weller but they fit Walnut Hollow and Harbor freight wood burners. Great selection.

Great price for all the tips you receive. Haven't used all of them, but the ones I have used do the job.
