March 6, 2012

Her instincts tell her he's dangerous...

While her overprotective brother's away, Meara Greymere's planning to play—and it wouldn't hurt to find herself a mate in the process. The last thing she needs is one of his SEAL buddies spoiling her fun, even if the guy is the hottest one she's ever seen...

His powers of persuasion are impossible to resist...

Finn Emerson is a battle-hardened Navy SEAL and alpha wolf. He's a little overqualified for baby-sitting, but feisty Meara is attracting trouble like a magnet...

As the only responsible alpha male in the vicinity, Finn is going to have to protect this intriguing woman from a horde of questionable men, and definitely from himself...

More About the Author

USA TODAY bestselling, and award-winning author and creator of award-winning teddy bears who have found homes all over the world including Australia, Switzerland, China, and Russia, and a retired officer of the US Army Reserves, I love to plant trees and flowers and if I could, I'd turn all the deserts green. Time travels are my favorite read, although I love to read most anything, and the Bourne series, Romancing the Stone, Sixth Sense, Legend, The Princess Bride, Stardust, Inkheart, LOTR, and tons of other movies are my favorites.

I love to research, to make urban fantasy worlds real, to bring a little of the paranormal into our world. Even in "Winning the Highlander's Heart" the heroine feels she is cursed and she has second sight. But I try to do it in a way that feels real, and not fantasized. :) Currently, I'm working on book 2 of the new jaguar shifter series, but still am working on wolf book number 12 and 13! So more hunky wolves to come! A SEAL in Wolf's Clothing has just released.

2.0 out of 5 stars Ignorance isn't bliss -- it's just stupidity March 15, 2012
Format:Mass Market Paperback
It is almost impossible for me not to finish a book once I start it, but this time I simply couldn't force myself to go on. The premise that it is important for the heroine to be protected but her protectors -- and indeed her whole family -- keep deciding she has to be kept in the dark about exactly what is going on is ridiculous. The heroine is supposed to be an alpha female wolf but she dithers like a 13-year-old. Even after assasins have come after her, she is still more interested in checking out potential mates that doing everything she can to stay alive. Our Hero (and please note the sarcasm here)flip-flops between jealousy that any other male might want her, continually re-iterating that her brother has declared her off limits (and declaring he's not the settling down type in any event) and engaging in heavy petting while sharing her bed. I think it was the interlude on the beach where our hero and heroine make and share s'mores while hiding from what I count would be assassin #4 that tipped the balance. If this is the behavior of alpha wolf-shifters, let alone marginally intelligent adults when facing danger from unnamed sources, then I think I'll go look up the Big Bad Wolf and see how he and Little Red Riding Hood are getting along. It has to be more believable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wolf shifters and Navy SEALS....YUM! March 6, 2012
Format:Mass Market Paperback
My Review:

First things first, this is #9 in this series. I have not read any of the others and you certainly don't need to for the enjoyment of this book. This truly works as a stand-alone novel.

Finn is part of an all-wolf-shifter SEAL team. When one of the team is attacked, they quickly realize that the entire team has been targeted. Hunter is part of the team and he is the alpha of his pack, but he just left on his honeymoon, leaving his sister, Meara, home to take care of things there. Every single one of the guys on the SEAL team would love to be mated to Meara, but Hunter has warned them all off. He doesn't want her mated to a SEAL and quite honestly, she doesn't want that either. When the threat to the team comes, Finn is dispatched to protect Meara. It quickly becomes clear that she is definitely in the assassin's sights and she is not happy about it. She had planned to take full advantage of this two-week period without her brother hovering and find a mate. Having Finn hovering as a substitute is not acceptable.

This was a fun book to read. The fact that I enjoy reading books with shifter storylines and military heroes...well, you get the idea. It would have been hard for me not to enjoy this book.

Meara wasn't my most favorite heroine ever...her search for a mate had a thread of desperation to it that I didn't like, especially when the author presented her as a character that every guy was practically tripping over to try to mate her. I didn't quite get that. I get that she has an overprotective brother, but the other side of the storyline is about how much he's gone for the SEAL's and not working as alpha. It seems to me that if he's gone that much, then Meara could have found a mate just fine without him hovering. The two sides just don't mesh.

I enjoyed the book. It read really easily and definitely kept my attention. I would read more of these to come if more of this SEAL team was featured especially the enigmatic Bjornolf...yum!

4.0 out of 5 stars 3.5 stars. I liked the romance March 6, 2012
Format:Mass Market Paperback
With her over protective Navy SEAL brother is away on his honeymoon, werewolf Meara Greymere is on the hunt for the perfect mate. Before she can set her plans into motion, Finn Emerson, a friend of her brother's and a fellow SEAL, makes a surprise visit and informs her that an assassin is after her and he's to become her personal body guard. Meara is irritated at Finn for interrupting her search for a mate but she's finding it hard to stay mad at him when he looks at her like he's interested in keeping her for himself. Finn reminds himself that Meara is off limits and he's just here to stop a killer from getting his hands on her. He loves his job as a SEAL and Meara has made it perfectly clear that she doesn't want the danger or worry in her life. As the search to uncover the assassin's identity heats up, Meara and Finn are finding it difficult to keep their hands off one another and they start considering what they'd be willing to sacrifice to be together.

Meara is a strong woman with a mind of her own. She's looking for an alpha to mate with but she wants someone who will treat her as his equal, not someone who will try to control her. I don't usually care heroines with alpha personalities because I can't help feeling like they're always trying to prove something. What I really liked about Meara is that she knows her own strength and is just looking for someone to respect that. Can't say that I thought that person was Finn at first because he just kept thinking about how sexy she is and how he can protect her. But he started to grow on me as the story unfolded and he saw that Meara is more than a damsel who needs to be looked after.

There is sexual tension between Meara and Finn from the start but it took a little longer for me to feel any real chemistry. Their thoughts kept turning to sex and I was worried that's all their relationship would be. As we get further into the book, Finn and Meara start opening up and getting to know one another and I could feel actual substance to their relationship. By the end I was convinced these two were a good match and just wish I didn't have to wait so long for them to finally get into bed together. There's a lot of hot teasing and almost moments but it's not until the last few chapters of the book do they have sex. I felt it was a little too much teasing and by the time they actually mated, I didn't care as much as I should have for the big moment.

The biggest obstacle between Meara and Finn being together is not the assassins after them but Finn's work as a SEAL and Meara's want of not having to worry if her mate will make it home to her. Both were pretty set in their ways but it was always obvious something would be worked out. Yes, the ending was predictable but sometimes I need a book that I can count on delivering a HEA and that's what this book did.

In A SEAL in Wolf's Clothing, there are assassins after Meara and her brother Hunter. You don't find out why until the end so it made for a good mystery but this story took a back seat to Meara and Finn's developing relationship. I tend to like a little more story to my romance but with a couple of close calls and interactions with interesting side characters, I ended up really enjoying this book. I haven't read all the books in Terry Spear's Heart of the Wolf series but these last couple ones I did pick up have been entertaining and I look forward to seeing what happens next.
