I have been throwing axes and knives a long time. And sharpening them was a PITA. I managed to discover this tool which saves hours. Thank god for meeting JR.

I've tried all kinds of sharpeners over the years - stones, stone systems, gadget sharpeners. NOTHING I tried ever put on the kind of edge I was looking for . . . until the Selectool.

I bought one at an antique threshers reunion in North Carolina. I saw the guy dull up a machete, sharpen it with this tool, and then cut paper with it. "Okay," I said, "I'll try one more time."

I took it home and proceeded to sharpen every knife in my wife's knife block in about 5 minutes. I got a very sharp edge on all the knives, including the bread knife, very quickly with very little effort. Well, well. It looks like this thing actually works. I check her knives occasionally and they stay sharp. Very impressive for the price.

I've used it to sharpen a bunch of scissors in my house. I've got a bunch of kids and they dull up scissors fast. This tool sharpens every one of them quickly and easily.

I actually have sharpened my lawn mower blade with this tool, just like it says. I tip the mower over, lay the tool on the cutting edge, and stroke down. It takes off a bunch of dull metal very quickly. I do the same number of strokes on the other side and its sharp. It really does what it says.

I'm not a glass cutter, but I believe this tool will cut glass and tile if I need it to. The unit comes with a lifetime guarantee, and the company has been around for almost 50 years, so I can get a brand new tool if this one ever breaks. Nice!

I recommend this highly. I've struggled with other sharpeners that claim to work but don't really do the job. This one does it all and more. Great tool.

**Update**

A few months after I started using this product on my knives and tools, I began doing demonstrations at live shows around where I live.

This product has a lot of promise for someone looking for a small/portable/light sharpener that is able to work on a variety of different items. For me it didn't really turn out to fulfill that promise though; it's a great idea, but the execution wasn't quite there. It's not all bad, but let me start with the negatives first...

* The overall feel is a bit flimsy. I know they were going for lightweight but perhaps material a little thicker would be advisable. There is a lifetime warranty though, so if you break it you'll probably get another one free of charge (more on that below).

* The included documentation is rough and could use some updating. I found a few inconsistencies in how to perform certain actions, grammatical errors and wording that made some tasks less than intuitive. When I emailed them asking for some clarification on a few of the less clear descriptions the reply was the documentation is "like 50 years old" and would be updated in the future. I thought that was a facetious comment, but apparently not; if seems the original design is about that old.

* There website mentions a lengthy video that teaches how to use the product - which would probably be quite beneficial given the state of the documentation - yet in order access it you have to sign up for an account. That strikes me as a rather peculiar requirement for something I already own. Proper usage instructions are the type of info you want readily available to your customers, and youtube is probably a good place for it. Heck, everything else is there already.

* The blade alignment gates do allow enough blade movement so you need to be sure you're repeating the angles precisely on both sides, similar to other sharpeners really.

I recently purchased a Kershaw EDC knife, which was very sharp right out of the box. I love tinkering, so the first thing I did when I got home was break open my Smith sharpener to try and bring out the best in the blade. Well, that was a mistake! Within minutes, I had dulled the blade to the point where it was failing the paper test over and over again.

I immediately got on Amazon in search of a knife sharpener, after watching the demo video, I had decided to give the Selectool a shot. Amazon delivered within two days..sweet as always!

The first couple swipes of my knife through the Selectool's knife guide felt like I was rubbing sand paper on the edge. Not only could I feel the resistance, I could see small dust-like steel shavings accumulating in the Selectool guide. Don't be alarmed, they are the result of imperfections in the blade that shouldn't have been there in the first place. My Smith tool had dulled the knife pretty bad indeed!

After a few more swipes through the Selectool, the knife edge had a shimmering edge on it, and cut through paper like butter.

I've since sharpened all of my pocket and kitchen knives, and am running out of things to sharpen. I didn't know sharpening addictions are a thing?

Love this tool and will be recommending to all my friends!
