5.0 out of 5 stars Great game - could use tutorial, May 31, 2010
By
This review is from: JEWEL LABYRINTH (CD-ROM)
This is a great puzzle game that I have spent hours and hours playing. I can not give an opinion on the Amazon vendor that sells it as I bought it at the same time as several other games from a different vendor. I had a very hard time getting the idea of the puzzles when I first played and could not find much information online. That is what prompted me to write a review as I almost gave up on it but am so glad I didn't.

There are 290 puzzles in "relaxed mode" that are plenty hard for me. I am now at the 196th puzzle and have skipped 6 that I can't figure out. There were more than a dozen others that I couldn't figure out initially but I skipped them and went back to them later and got them. (Right now I am stuck on 144,146,153,176,188 and 191). There are 50 levels in classic mode and I have done the first 12 of those. I have not tried Challenge mode or Diabolical mode and don't expect to be able to do them anyway. However the game is well worth the 290 puzzles in the relaxed mode and I may figure out a few in the other modes. I find it very addicting because you know there is a solution and so you keep trying to think of new approaches.

As the other reviewer said, there are only basic instructions and there is no tutorial. It would be very helpful to see one screen played before trying it yourself. I will try to explain the game. You are a little person in the puzzle and there are one or more jewels (usually several) within various different screen designs with walls. There are designated patches within the design where you are to push the jewels (that solves the puzzle). The problem is that you can only push individual jewels in different directions, you can not pull them toward you, and can not push two at the same time. At first it does not seem possible to get the jewels in the right location by only pushing. You have to be careful to not push a jewel into a corner and sometimes not even against a wall. I have often been able to get all the jewels in place except one and usually have to start over. You can "undo" a move (or many moves), which is very helpful, and you are suppose to be able to save a partially played game but that didn't work for me. The game disk says Windows 98, ME, an XP, but I am playing it successfully on Windows Vista.

If you like puzzle games I think you would like this one. You have no time limit and can skip ahead to the next puzzle if you really get stuck. I think it is probably good brain exercise and I am amazed how many different puzzle configurations are in the game. There are no solutions included, but probably that is good as I might give up too easily.

1.0 out of 5 stars How About Some Instructions???!!!, July 14, 2008
By
This review is from: JEWEL LABYRINTH (CD-ROM)
I really enjoy the "Match 3 Jewels" sort of computer games (I have several), but this is impossible! Maybe I'm just stupid, but I have no idea, really, what to do in "pushing" the jewels around. The "instructions," if you want to call them that, are woefully inadequate, at least for me. Okay -- make the little man move the "pieces" up, down, left, right.... But there HAS to be more to it than that! Even at the Beginner/Easy Level, I don't see the point to it, or the logic, or how to really accomplish "winning" it. I'm glad that I picked it up on Amazon.com, really inexpensively. Had I paid full price for it, I would really be tearing my hair out!!! There is no further information on-line, either, or none that I could find. Get "Bejeweled 2" or "7 Wonders of the Ancient World (I and II)" or "Zuma," but skip this unless you want lessons in frustration!!!!!
