A terrifying cross between Shutter Island and The Exorcist, SEVEN-X is a bone-chilling exploration into the root of evil within us.Los Angeles Times Investigative Reporter Eddie Hansen gets a tip on a missing death row prisoner, Annette Dobson, known as "The SIDS Killer."

Pregnant at the time of her execution, Eddie adamantly believes it was staged and Dobson was secretly shipped to a Behavioral Health Center in a remote location outside the small town of Dell City, Texas.

With the opportunity to break the story, Eddie voluntarily commits himself into the asylum. His journals, video diary and recordings leave a trail of breadcrumbs into a series of radical experimental procedures conducted on patients without their consent.

With solid proof that this vicious serial killer is alive, her forced exorcism and the impending nativity for a child the world believes is dead, Eddie has the story that will redeem his life and career.

But as he dives deeper into his investigation, Eddie is forced to confront his own demons as he unwilling becomes a participant in the asylum's paranormal rehabilitation experiment.

Mike Wech has produced a stunning work with Seven-X. I found myself unable to put it down. Not only was the story intriguing and thrilling, but it left me completely entertained and enthralled. I found myself sympathizing with the characters and appalled at their behavior all at the same time; and also constantly wondering if Eddie had stumbled upon a madhouse or if the entire facility was some sort of charade or truly the home of unspeakable experiments that he believed he was looking for in the first place. Seven-X is filled with characters that you will find not only interesting but terrifying and deliciously confusing at the same time. Spend some time with Eddie at Uphir and ask yourself - Do I really know what I am capable of?
  • Review by Paula Limbaugh for Horror Novel Reviews  - 5 STARS (Full Review at HorrorNovelReviews.com)
This is a story of good vs. evil.  Possession and redemption.  Demons' fighting to gain entrance to one's very soul.  The Bible states when one demon is exorcised he will bring back 7 more to try again (Matthew 12: 43-45) hence the title.  Ironically, before starting this book a friend had posted the question, what are your favorite lesser known found footage movies?  That is exactly how this book reads!  You can visualize what's happening as you go along journal entry by journal entry.  I can't wait to see this on the big screen.

Brilliant Book. So gripping I couldn't put it down. Not often a book actually freaks me out!
  • Angie, Amazon UK - 5 STARS
A commanding first novel.  It can't be easy as a functional person to accurately depict a man's decent into madness. Worth the read

  • About SEVEN-X
The battle between GOOD and EVIL raging inside our mind, body and soul was a difficult subject to write about. I was forced to confront the best and worst of myself through these characters. Writing SEVEN-X was TERRIFYING for me. Exploring a spiritual realm that we continue to debate exists is a mission of faith, hope and love. The three things which remain after death.  In exploring MY OWN DARKNESS, I discovered so much depth to the human soul and know there is still so much left to discover. Personally documenting a character's DESCENT INTO MADNESS and experiencing it through them is an INTENSE EXPERIENCE that I dove into as deep as I could, remaining authentic to the VISIONS I experienced venturing into Uphir with Eddie.

Human beings are a unique species, able to express love, kindness, compassion and mercy while still holding FORCES OF EVIL, destruction, chaos, despair and hate WITHIN US! At any given moment we can swing in either direction, and ACT ON THESE IMPULSES without ever really considering the root of where these things live, or HOW FAR WILL THEY TAKE US.

The best way to EXPERIENCE SEVEN-X is to read it the way it was written, ALONE AT NIGHT, unobstructed from the outside world. You will begin to sense and perhaps see this OTHER DIMENSION. You will experience SOMETHING BEYOND YOURSELF through Eddie's journey and these words will take hold of you.  This is not your ordinary book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't read when you're by yourself!! May 1, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
You WILL be spooked out and start hearing whispers if you read this alone at night. Be forewarned!!

The author did a fantastic job of making the reader feel the horror of delving into the unknown supernatural world of demons and other things that go bump in the night. The premise that when you get "exorcised", that seven more demons join the original in hijacking your soul is unique and really scary. Just when you think you're safe!!

Half the time I really bought the medical conspiracy theory, too! This proves how well-written the storyline gets, you're never really sure of the truth.

There could have been lots more character development of the demons, though. We got quick glimpses as Eddie got "touched" by their presence, but didn't really understand the depth of their evil. Also, I never understood the leopard references/obsessions. Is there going to be a sequel that explains what happens to Eddie?

1.0 out of 5 stars God knows, I tried. February 3, 2015
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I tried to read this. God knows I tried. I got a little over 33% through.

Concerns in no particular order:

1: The foundation of this fantasy concerns the search for a pregnant woman who was executed. Ok, that's impossible:
International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights: Article 6(5)
American Convention on Human Rights: Article 4(5)
Additional Protocol to the Geneva Conventions: Article 76(3)
All against the execution of pregnant women. We're signatories to all of these. Iran might do it but it doesn't happen in the civilized world. So it's an impossible, unbelievable conceit.

2: OK, the guy is supposed to be psychotic if not schizophrenic and probably possessed.. He raves. He is inconsistent. He's clearly delusional. He has weird experiences. The problem is that it's hard to care about him because he doesn't make sense. Even psychotic people have a consistency of viewpoint. Even if this guy were a paranoid schizophrenic with fast cycling bi-polar disorder he'd make more sense.

3: This is supposed to be a cross between Shutter Island and the Exorcist. Not so: they are both well-written. Also both have believable conceits. Also they both have characters you can care about. The protagonist here comes off as merely a jerk.

4: The hype. International best-selling novel reaching #1 in Dark Horror and Religious Mystery. Unless this is the only novel in this classification I can't believe it. I checked several public library catalogs, Albany, Chicago, Pittsburgh, and Los Angeles and it doesn't show up in one of them. A #1 best-seller in any category is going to show up in some library somewhere.

4.0 out of 5 stars Demonic warfare for the soul. May 2, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I cannot believe this is his first novel. It was very well written; I saw the world through Eddie's eyes. I was a little nervous going in, knowing that demons were a part of it, and not the YA versions that are bad (moronic, disgusting, and flesh eating) but not evil. These demons are evil in the biblical sense; they are tormenters that attempt to inhabit the soul. Eddie attempts to navigate a "treatment center" that doesn't technically exist. He leaves his fate to the clinical psychologist, Dr. Haworth, by signing the waiver to enter the facility. Here he haunted by his past, not only through memories, but the patients in the facility. Demons preying on him, waiting for an opening into his soul.

It was a good book, suspenseful; I didn't want to put it down. Certainly looking forward to the next installment. What happens to Eddie after the final journal entry? I need an encounter with Ward E (I think). What is this creature that roams the night? Is what I think going on actually what is going on?

5.0 out of 5 stars This book will make you rethink your own dark thoughts. November 2, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
In this book the reader follows Eddie trying to get the story of his life as a reporter. Doing so he stumbles upon a unmarked mental institute that keep inmates that were supposed to be executed. The reader sees Eddie meeting his own disturbed past while fighting the demons away that he doesn't believe in. I seriously wanted to slap Eddie a few times for being so hard headed. The only bad thing about it is, I have to wait for another year to read the next book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best Horror Book I've Read!! October 31, 2012
Format:Paperback
This was a really good book. I have never read a book quite like this. It was scary, dramatic and suspense filled. I could totally see this book turning into the next exorcist movie!! Eddie is a stubborn man looking into missing death row inmates and what he stumbles upon will creep you out and keep you on the edge of your seat. Definite must read. There were times when the description was sooooo good I believed I was there!!!
