3.0 out of 5 stars A bit overwhelming for the beginner, November 15, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: SEWING STEP BY STEP (Singer Sewing Reference Library) (Hardcover)
This book, I suppose, is aimed at the beginner. It would probably be better suited as a companion to a sewing class, as it only seems to halfway explain things. Not a good choice for someone completely new to sewing, as I was when I purchased it several years ago. I found that, despite the glossy pictures (which were a little dated) a lot of my basic questions went unanswered, and much of the information was under the assumption that you already knew quite a bit about sewing already. I see now that this is out of print, and I only can hope the newer version has improved.

3.0 out of 5 stars A little outdated but the techniques are still good!, October 26, 2004
This review is from: SEWING STEP BY STEP (Singer Sewing Reference Library) (Hardcover)
This book covers a lot of techniques (home dec. and clothes), gets started from the very basics (equipments, tools, the sewing machine and serger!, etc.) It is a little bit dated (was written in 1990). Also talks about the patterns from what's what on the envelope, to altering and sewing. How to choose the right fabric. I really liked the "Sewing Activewear" part (it has even leotards and swimsuits in it) and the "Children-section" too (bibs, hooded towels, receiving blanke's etc.+ a beautiful heriloom dress!) ..and a few good ideas on adding for a growing child's clothes. At the Home decor section you can find the "usuals", such as different kind of curtains, pillows, tabel coverings, etc. but you get a really wide range of it + many kind of solutions for openings (for pillows, duve covers, etc.) It's a well written and illustrated book with many photos. ..maybe not for the complete beginner since not every single steps are photographed and explaind fully.
