Book Description

June 1, 1996
How and why do people sell and buy sex? what are the risks associated with prostitution? should prostitution be legalized? This book is the most detailed description ever provided of street prostitution. It is based on three years' research in which the authors interviewed prostitutes and their clients and spent many months working in a red light area. The book makes extensive use of direct quotes from the women and the men, as well as fieldnotes from the authors based upon their observations in the red light areas. Topics covered in the book include the women's negotiations with clients, HIV, drug use and violence. The book also describes the impact of working as a prostitute on women's home life. No attempt is made to moralise about prostitution in the book, instead the authors concentrate on the experiences of the women and men involved in selling and buying sex, and describes prostitution from their standpoint.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"...the accessibility of the book and the contemporary importance of the subject matter will commend it to a wide academic audience. It should also be essential reading for 'armchair moralisers." - Community Care "I could not put this compelling book down...to be recommended to research sceptics. It is rich in evidence and provides a good base from which to launch discussions within the sexual health curriculum." - Nursing Times"...rich descriptions of the lives and experiences of street working prostitutes and their clients. This book will be of use to students in providing them with empirical data as well as giving them an insight into the everyday experiences of women selling sex from thestreets." - Women's Studies Network (UK) Association Newsletter "I would recommend this book to anyone interested in women's health, and social issues associated with prostitution." - Journal of Public Health Medicine --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
