Let's be honest. These audio books are not cheap. So, the question comes, are they worth it? I would say that in the case of "Gift of the Gods," it is. The story line is moving, compelling, and well narrated. Of course, no one knows Daniel Jackson better than Michael Shanks (who shoulders the bulk of the narration), and this is first and foremost a Daniel Jackson story. However, there were some surprises, too. He also he does an amazing Jack O'Neill and while Shanks doesn't quite capture the Texan accent of Hammond, he comes fairly close. All in all, I was quite impressed by the delivery. My only regret was that the story wasn't longer. I just wanted it to keep going!
As others have mentioned, be sure to listen to the audio interview at the end of the CD. It makes a nice bonus.

The best Stargate audiobook so far!,
This review is from: SG-1: Gift of the Gods (Audio CD)
It's beautifully read by Michael Shanks and the story just rocks: it concentrates on the SGC and especially the SG-1 team trying to shut down a gate to a different reality. It's suspenseful, full of team-spirit and so sad in places that it made me literally cry - though it does have a happy ending, kind of. It's SG-1 at their best, caring for each other and being an awesome team. And the interview with Michael Shanks at the very end is really funny - I love the fact that he still loves playing Daniel Jackson, that he likes going back to him

Wow, I just got through watching this... did I say watching? I meant listening to this story.
I love stargate, my favorite series by far. Micheal Shanks is one of my favorite actors and his character is my favorite on Stargate. I saw this CD, but wasn't sure how much I'd like it. I've never listened to fiction in audio format before (except a Stephen King audiobook a while back) so I wasn't quite sure what to expect. I was expecting nothing more than a reading, perhaps a dramatic reading. But this is nothing like I would of thought possible. This is one of the most enjoyable hours I have spent in a while. The whole time I was listening to the audio I could see the characters come to life in my mind, the acting was amazing. This audio book is much more than a reading, it has special effects, a soundtrack and other actors. This was quite the experience for me, and has prompted me to buy the rest in the series (check my other reviews for reviews on those audios). So now let me review this story. This story is a Daniel Jackson story. It has to deal with alternate realities, and of course a "gift of the gods". I don't want to get too much into what this is as part of figuring it out is figuring out the story. suffice it to say, this is a great story that ties in well with the earlier seasons of Stargate back when they were just starting out and only had but a few enemies. This was a great story, I enjoyed revisiting the characters, Jack, Sam, Teal'c, Hammond and more. Let me wrap this up. Story 5/5 (yes it is that good, very good. I want to listen to it again, and likely will as soon as I finish this review) Acting 5/5 Michael does a great job, and he really brings the story to life Audio 5/5 p90 fire, weapons blast, and SGC sound effects galore, wow, I never imagined this would happen. It brought so much joy to the experience it really made this into an over the top production, more than worthy of purchase Bonus Content 5/5 The story is about 1 hour long, then for about 8-10 minutes we have an interview with Micheal Shanks. This is a great addition and I love how they are doing this series and how they are treating it. Bottom line. Pick it up! If you've watched only a few episodes of Stargate (enough to know the characters) you will find much joy in this audio. Everyone is brought to life, and this is just one of those stories that you will not easily forget with time. If you're a hardcore sg-1 fan, of course you'll love this audio. I bought this with low expectations. I expected to get a pretty ok story but be entertained and get to reminisce on older times, instead I got so much more. I cant recommend this enough. My only complaint, 6 "episodes" for this season (only 3 of which are from SG1). Season 2 has been planned (I think they come out in may - august) and I cannot wait to get my hands on them. I hope "season 3" will have a few more episodes (maybe 6 each? :) ) Best part? I can quickly and easily revisit this wonderful series at any moment by popping in the cd and listening. When I want to watch Stargate now I tend to watch whole seasons, with this new format I can kick back and relax and take a visit through the stargate and explore new stories at my own pace. Bottom Line: Pick It Up, Highly Recommended

Enchanted,
This review is from: SG-1: Gift of the Gods (Audio CD)
It was the first audio book I bought. First of all I was afraid to understand nothing (I'm french) But listenning it, it was quite easy.
Mickael Shanks is a really good reader, when you listen it, you project yourself in the tv show as if you were watching it. I'm really satisfied about this purchase, and I look forward to buying the others.

This was the first Audio book of SG-1 that I have purchased. I really enjoyed this book. It was fun listening to this in the car. It is short so doesn't take too long to complete. Michael Shanks reads the story along with one other person. Michael switches from character to character; as he has done on several of the series' shows. The premise of the novel is unique and I enjoyed how it plays out. At the end of the book Michael does an interview and it was great to get his perspective on performing the book. Again, I highly recommend this audio book.

It was absoloutly GREAT! Suspensful! What happened? What is this artifact? What is going on in the gateroom? All seen through Daniel's eyes. A visit to a planet and an artifact leaves Daniel with a hard decision.

Stargate SG-1: Gift of the Gods expands on the mythology told within the TV series. This time our beloved team of intergalactic explorers are faced with a gift from evil itself. Waking from a fog Dr. Daniel Jackson is faced with trying to figure out why two Stargate commands are connected by a bridge created by the stargate. Aided by all the characters we know and love, Jackson and the rest of the team are assisted by a new character as they fight to repel enemy forces within both realms. Now the pros and cons.
The pros: 1) Micheal Shanks' reading is outstanding. His ability to convey emotion and action is great. His depth as a character conveys well in this format and his impressions of secondary characters is outstanding. 2) The story is incredible. Sometimes audiobooks that are only one or two hours long are heavily edited and watered down, this story has a lot of depth and fun. 3) The production value is great. Some people prefer audiobooks that only have the narrators voice and don't contain any dramatics, I am not one of those people. The dramatics help to convey what a narrator can not and this audiobook does it well. The cons: 1) There are two main characters in the book with separate voice overs. It would have been nice to have a surprise appearance or two. 2) Only an hour long. Such greatness can come in small packages, but only an hour? ALL FEEDBACK IS APPRECIATED. THANKS AND GOOD LISTENING. |
