This card reader is perfect!
A. Gomes
Installation of the driver was automatic with no hiccups, and from that moment forth, I have had absolutely no issues with getting this device to read my CAC.

We have only been able to get it to work intermittently at best.

I bought this because the USB cord is shorter than my current CAC Card reader (more portable and less chance of the cord getting tugged pulling it out of my laptop bag). I plugged it in, the driver loaded, I inserted my CAC card and was logged in retrieving e-mail with no delays. I'm running Windows 7. No problem getting the device to work. I suspect the previous reviewer either had a bad reader (hardware) or a software configuration issue (which is often the case with CAC readers).

This item arrived quickly and I was very pleased when it worked perfectly with my Surface Pro. I was able to use external peripherals with the the USB hub and the PIV/CAC reader consistently read my PIV card until, without warning, it stopped reading PIV and SD cards one week after it arrived. I bought a second USB PIV reader which works just fine when plugged into the SGT121 USB ports, so the problem is definitely with the SGT121 PIV reader slot. Likewise, if I plug an external SD card reader into the USB ports on the SGT121, I have no problems reading SD cards. I will request a second unit and will update this review with reliability information.

Update 7/3/2013: Tried the reader in another machine and the PIV reader works just fine. Updated my browser on the first machine and it now seems to work fine. Not sure if this completely solves the problem, but it appears to be working fine for now. As a result, I have upgraded my rating to 4 stars as I really appreciate the small form factor and can easily take it in my accessory bag when I travel. Minus one star for the initial inconsistency.

Bought one of these MONTHS ago. Ever since, I have tried to get it to work. I spent hours at Military CAC, downloading certificates, adjusting Internet Explorer settings, and installing drivers. Every time I had to do another bs NKO course, I told myself I will get that stupid thing to work this time. I assumed it was just Navy NKO being picky with settings or something.

Today, I bought the standard CAC reader from the NEX, the SCM SCR3310 (apparently version 2.0) and it worked. I still had the certificates installed, but other than that I did nothing else to it. (Windows 8 compatible even though the packaging doesn't mention it because it's so old I guess.)

Out of curiosity, I tried the SGT121 again. I actually got a little closer to it working because it actually came up with a credentials log in, but then soon there after said there was an error and to make sure the CAC was firmly inserted the correct way. I messed around with it some more but eventually gave up. If it does not work as a CAC reader, I wouldn't have bought this in the first place. So much for all in one convenience.

I had good luck with a Stanley Global hub I bought from the PX. I have a Macbook with Mountain Lion on it and needed it to connect to DISA OWA email that requires a CAC reader. I bought the SGT121 but was a little challenged getting it to work. It comes with NO instructions however my ISO support team at work pointed me in the right direction. Mountain Lion has the Stanley Global drivers built in but it still needs some form of middleware. I got it to work in about 15 minutes using CACKey from militarycac.mil and I can get to AKO and email now.

It turns out to be quite the nifty toy. Right now I have my CAC, my HP Printer and my Samsung Galaxy (tethered) plugged into it and all work together. In addition I can pull the memory out of my Galaxy and plug it into it as well. Its kind of like a swiss army knife for geeks. I haven't tried the SIM card reader yet.

Downside is it comes with a little CD that doesn't fit into a Mac. I put the CD into my Dell and it reads but there's NOTHING on it for a Mac. It should come with some instructions for a Mac.

This is a great little tool. It is about the size of the CAC card and has a slot for everything and three USB ports. I needed a CAC reader for my Dell XPS12 with Windows 8 which only has two USB ports right next to each other and no SD slots. Most small readers covered both ports but because this one has the extended USB cable I can still use my other port in addition to the three on this device.
I had no problems with it recognizing the card or using any SD ports. There are ports for stuff I don't even know what they are, but if i needed to plug one in I am good to go.
It appears sturdy enough to last me. I've used it a few weeks now, almost daily. The little USB cable clicks in to the underside of the device when not in use so it transports nicely as well.
Product shipped quick and arrived a day early.
I think it is one of the best tools I've found recently.

I bought the reader for the purpose of having a sleek compact, travel CAC reader. It gets the job done, doesn't have a long cable to tangle up and get in the way, and is extremely thin. The only draw back I for see, is the cable coming out of this looks like it may fray easily with the constant bending. Time will tell. Other than that it's a great reader, I didn't have to download any drivers, works on my windows 8 and my buddy used it in his Mac.
