Editorial Reviews

Review

"Gardiner Shattuck's book is a splendid contribution to Civil War historiography. The first study to compare the religious life of the Union and Confederate armies, it also offers shrewd insights into the nature of Northern and Southern society. I found particularly impressive his account of the way that military defeat helped rejuvenate the religious tradition of the South. This is an important and provocative book." -- David Herbert Donald, author Lincoln

"Shattuck's comparative study of the role of religion in the Union and Confederate armies provides fresh evidence of the difference between Northern and Southern society, and his analysis of the different roles religion played in the two armies shows why cultural analysis is essential to understanding both Northern victory and Southern response to defeat. Everyone interested in nineteenth-century American religion will find this book a useful beginning point for reevaluating the intellectual history of Civil War America....[Shattuck] brings together in one volume significant new data and puts it in a very helpful comparative context." -- John B. Boles, The Journal of Southern History

"The strength of this work lies in its comparative approach to the relationship between religion and culture. Shattuck has done a wonderful job of conveying the complex concepts of the roles of religion in both northern and southern societies....its fine analysis carries this volume and makes it indispensable reading for Civil War scholars." -- Georgia Historical Quarterly, Summer 1988

4.0 out of 5 stars The Only Source for Information about the North, August 12, 2010

This review is from: A SHIELD AND A HIDING PLACE (Paperback)
While this book is short and fails to provide an exhaustive examination, it is the only book I can find that contains any information about spiritual movements in the Northern Army during the Civil War. Sadly, many of the footnotes refer to unpublished dissertations in the Harvard library. To his credit, the author has made a rarely mentioned subject available to a limited degree. I need more and hope to see additional works published to balance all of the works done about revival in the Southern armies during this same period. The whole point is to document that God worked mightily in the North and South during this period. We just need the documentation to get this message out!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fabulous Resource For Civil War/Religious Studies, May 2, 2000
By
walker cosgrove (Upland, Indiana, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A SHIELD AND A HIDING PLACE (Paperback)
I think that Shattuck's book is great for anyone who is interested in serious scholarship on the religious atmosphere surrounding the American Civil War. Shattuck gives equal treatment to both the North and the South in this book, something that i do not think happens enough. This book has about 130 pages of text, and 20 pages of bibliography. In that bibliography there is a wealth of information on Civil War. Shattuck did some very thoural research, and it is refreshing to read a book where an author is not making empty claims. My only complaint is that there were points with in the book that I thought he focused to much on the religious aspects of both armies. To finish this review, I just want to say that this book is great for anyone wanting to read about the Civil War, for anyone wanting to see how an historian does history, and for anyone looking for a great source on the religious life of the Civil War armies. For professors teaching the art of history in Universities or Colleges really should give this little book a chance as a text to show students how to write and do history. It worked for me.
