I've played zillions of video games. This would have to make my list for top 3 to take with me to a desert island (assuming my computer somehow worked there). I got it when it first came out about a decade ago and played it to death. I still love it: even now I go through one of the faction campaigns about once every five months.

It has all of the fun and none of the annoyances of the later Total War outings. Gameplay is very atmospheric, very balanced, interesting up until the end. Still my favorite of all the Total War games.

Note that you should go with the "Gold" edition. Aside from not requiring a serial key, this edition is also fully patched with the last patch Creative Assembly issued. It does not include Mongol expansion, but I found that a disappointment: just battles, not any actual campaigns.

I recently re-bought this game after learning that the developers were producing Shogun 2. I was not disappointed by my nostalgia. It really captures the troubled times for me, and even though it is dated I enjoy it thoroughly. If you are a fan of the other Total War games, or even turn based strategy in general, it's worth the price tag!

This is really the game that started the whole Franchise, the one that started it all, it's replay value is still through the roof and it's unit selections are amazing... unfortunately it doesn't like to play on some of the newer machines so that will limit it a bit.

The graphics were not great and slow and the game design were not innovative. The overall game was uninteresting. I would not waste my money on such a game when there are more exciting and engaging games on the market today.
