Editorial Reviews

Coming off the great success of its Mahler Symphonies box set by Abravanel and the Utah Symphony, Musical Concepts presents the complete symphonies of Jean Sibelius. Forming the core of his compositions, Sibelius's symphonies span the length of his celebrated career as one of the greatest composers and conductors of the first half of the twentieth century. Each symphony a unique exploration of musical form, Abravanel and the Utah Symphony demonstrate their mastery of the composer's idiom and the range necessary to deliver superb performances of the seven works.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful By Ralph Moore TOP 500 REVIEWER on October 12, 2013
Format: Audio CD
This is the latest issue of famous recordings by Vanguard Records made in May 1977 in the superb acoustic of the Mormon Tabernacle, under the supervision of Seymour Solomon, whose recording techniques were far in advance of the capacity of contemporaneous playback equipment to do them proper justice. He always recorded with conductor Maurice Abravanel in Quadraphonic sound and modern, multichannel remastering reveals the results to be absolutely extraordinary: spacious, detailed, combining close orchestral perspective with the sense of a big performance space and no distortion; you would never guess they are "merely" analogue.

So the sound here alone might be reason enough for some Sibelius-loving audiophiles to acquire this set at bargain price. As his excellent Mahler recordings demonstrate, Abravanel was never very interventionist as an interpreter, so expect "straight", but very musical accounts. These recordings were made when he was 73 - not elderly for a conductor - and had already been directing the Utah State Symphony Orchestra for thirty years. Their string tone might not be as sumptuous as that of Karajan with the BSO or, for that matter, Ormandy in my favourite recording of the Seventh with the Philadelphians, but sonically it is hugely superior to both, especially the hissy 1960 account on Sony. The orchestra clearly breathe with him and every performance seems to be illuminated by a clear, bright Nordic light, partly the product of the sound and partly as a result of Abravanel's interpretative choices.

I sometimes miss the brooding mystery and deep magic that Karajan can find in Sibelius, but anyone wanting a beautifully presented, bargain-priced, sonically superlative souvenir of Abravanel's way with Finland's great national composer will not be disappointed. Try the brilliantly lit climax of the Seventh to get the feel of his style and you will know if you want to own it. I do.

While Abravanel's readings of Sibelius' scores are by no means the equal of those by Koussevitsky and Ormandy, they are certainly vastly superior to the listless and shallow interpretations of von Karajan. If it is true that Sibelius has fallen from public favour, this may owing to the fact that few contemporary conductors know Suomi, its geography and its people, well enough to discern Sibelius' thoughts. It is unfortunate that Koussevitsky's recordings of the Sibelius works, which he introduced to American audiences, are now of such poor technical quality as to be virtually useless for introducing today's young cognoscenti to the voice of Sibelius. Eugene Ormandy's recordings of the Sibelius 2nd and 5th symphonies still serve as the standard against which to measure all others. That being said, Abravanel offers a pleasant preliminary to the vast and profound panoply of Sibelius scores.
