5.0 out of 5 stars SIGMA 70-300mm F/4=5.6DL MACRO SUPER LENS, May 17, 2009

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: SIGMA LENS 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DL Macro Super SLR Camera Lens (Electronics)
FOR GENERAL USE LENSES, THERE IS A WIDE RANGE OF OFFERINGS FROM SEVERAL LENS MAKERS THAT OPERATE ON NIKON CAMERA BODIES. IN MY EXPERIENCE AS
A PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHER AND CAMERA STORE OWNER TESTING AND USING AND SELLING OPTICS, I HAVE NOT FOUND A BETTER 70-300mm FOR THE PRICE OR EVEN
FOR DOUBLE THE PRICE ! IT DOES NOT HAVE IMAGE STABILIZATION, HOWEVER. I'M
A STRONG ADVOVATE OF DEPLOYING A TRIPOD WHENEVER MAKING PICTURES, MOST
CERTAINLY WITH LONGER LENSES. AT MEDIAN APERATURES (f8 OR f11) THIS LENS DELIVERED IMAGES THAT WERE PRETTY SHARP - SHARP ENOUGH TO PRODUCE FINE 11x14 AND 16x20 PRINTS. THE LENS CONTRAST AND COLOR QUALITIES OF THE LENS ARE QUITE SATISFACTORY TOO. A LONG TIME AGO, IT USED TO BE MY HABIT TO
MAKE OPTICAL TESTS USING AIR FORCE RESOLUTION CHARTS. THIS METHOD MAY GET
VERY TIME-CONSUMING. IT IS REALLY SUFFICIENT TO MAKE LENS TESTS BY MERELY
TAKING PICTURES UNDER IDEAL CONDITIONS ( GOOD LIGHT, FILM, LAB PROCESSING,
AND A ROCK-STEADY CAMERA.) THE PROOF IS IN THE PUDDING, AS THE OLD PROPLE
SAY. FOR MACRO WORK, THIS LENS IS ADMITTEDLY NOT THE VERY BEST, BUT THEN
"YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR" COMES INTO PLAY. THIS IS NOT TO SAY THAT IT
CAN'T MAKE PRETTY GOOD MACRO SHOTS. HOWEVER, FOR THE SERIOUS MACRO PHOTOGRAPHER, A SPECIAL PURPOSE MACRO LENS OF A FIXED LENGTH, SUCH AS THE
SIGMA 105mm/2.8 MACRO LENS WILL GIVE THE MOST PLEASING RESULTS.

GENERALLY, THIS 70-300 IS WELL WORTH THE PRICE. FINDING A USED ONE OF
THESE LENSES MAY BE A LITTLE HARD, I SEE. ONE MUST ALSO MAKE SURE THAT
USED LENSES MAY BE RETURNED IF THEY DO NOT PLEASE.
