Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Silver, the "poor man's gold," is a unique commodity. It is the most important metal in monetary history, and it also has hundreds of industrial applications. Blanchard, cofounder of the Blanchard Mutual Fund Group and editor-in-chief of the Gold Newsletter, argues for a bull market in silver based on dwindling reserves, exploding Asian demand, and a spreading distrust of fiat money. He describes the pros and cons of different silver investments (actual silver, mining stocks, silver options, and futures) and includes a brief summary of technical analysis. To his discredit, Blanchard barely mentions the Hunt brothers' infamous 1980 attempt to corner the market. He does, however, warn readers of several "silver swindles." Much of his case for silver relies on assumptions extrapolations, and other leaps of faith. Still, precious metals have received precious little attention in the last ten years, unlike stocks and mutual funds. Public libraries should buy this book to balance their finance collections.?Robert Kruthoffer, Lane P.L., Hamilton, Ohio

From Booklist

Gold, silver, and other precious metals have always held an attraction for those hoping to reap investment fortunes. Behind the shiny lure, though, lie huge risks. Nonetheless, periodically--as sure as the market will rise and fall--traders and analysts who specialize in these commodities promise a "coming bull market." Blanchard, better known for touting gold in his Gold Newsletter and Confessions of a Gold Bug (1990), now sees a new demand for silver that will drive prices dramatically upward. He enticingly recalls the surge in price from $1.50 to $50 an ounce a decade and a half ago, barely noting that the increase was due to market manipulation and overspeculation by the Hunt brothers of Texas. Regardless, Blanchard does an excellent job of explaining the various uses of silver and how supply and demand can be affected, how the price of gold affects the price of silver, and the concept of remonetization. He also compares and contrasts various ways of buying silver, such as bullion, collectibles, coins, and mining stocks. Recommended for larger investment collections. David Rouse

Mr. Blanchard's (the author) mentor once said:

The major monetary metal in history is silver, not gold.
- Nobel laureate Milton Friedman
In an interview with James U. Blanchard III for the
20th Anniversary New Orleans Investment
Conference, November 7, 1993

Some major topic covered (which are still in public contention):
- Why gold and silver will perform well in inflation and even better during deflation.
- Why debt matters.
- And much much more.

Mr. Blanchard literally outlines the ills of what is happening today in the US and world economy alomst 20 years early, back when silver was $3 to $5. A true visionary and investor. A Compelling read.

4.0 out of 5 stars A timeless investment guide, February 9, 2008
This review is from: SILVER BONANZA: How to profit from the coming bull market in silver (Hardcover)
The late James Blanchard was possibly the man who is most responsible for the fact that Americans today may legally own gold. A founder of the National Committee to Legalize Gold and the New Orleans Investment Conference, Mr. Blanchard died in 1999, but not before penning the one book every silver investor should read and memorize, Silver Bonanza. Silver Bonanza lays out an investment case for silver that forms the basis of most modern analyses of silver, from use in medicine to supply and demand fundamentals. With silver crossing the $17 threshold this week, investors would be wise to understand why it could go far higher.
