Late 60's psychedelic pop redone for the modern era,
By music lover (Houston, Texas USA) - See all my reviews

This is a great album. If you like late Beatles or early Pink Floyd--or more contemporary bands like Ness, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, or The Warlocks, Silver Sunshine is the band for you.
Poppy, but not in a bad way, this album is a great debut. Check it out!

You mean they're not a British 60's band?!,
By Amara (Boston, MA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Silver Sunshine (Audio CD)
SPIN magazine wrote of Silver Sunshine in their "heavy rotation: what's blasting from the SPIN offices this month" column, saying, "In the spirit of peace, love and la la la-ing, this Sand Diego quartet mines the pop (and poppies) of the psychadelic-rock '60s and '70s, uncovering wonderfull bright, singsong John and Paul melodies" (Caryn Ganz, Feb 05 issue). This sentence sold me on the band and I went out to buy the CD. I never just go out and buy a brand new CD without having heard any of the songs before, but I could just tell that I would love Silver Sunshine and I was right. I don't think I have ever heard a band from today that can so closely create that 60s psychadelic pop sound.
The opener, "Velvet Skies," has drumbeats right out of The Beatles' "Tomorrow Never Knows." Stuart Sclater and Conor Ripley's voices blend and harmonize beautifully, while Richard Vaughn creates catchy riffs on electric guitar. "I See the Silver Sunshine" is kind of funny because the band's name is in the song, but it's also very poppy and catchy, with a great prominence of Sclater's bass. Really though, it seems a bit overkill to have Silver Sunshine as the band's name, album title, and part of a song title. If you are fan of The Beatles parody The Rutles, you will definitely love "Trinkets," which sounds as though Neil Innes is singing. This song also has the "oooh la la la's" that are essential to any 60's sounding band. "Way Up In The Big Sky" sounds like The Turtles, while "Nightmares" has a much more mellow, acoustic sound, complete with what sounds like harpsichord. I can't help but think of The Monkees when I hear "If I Had The Time," for the opening reminds me of "Last Train to Clarksville." "Greenfield Park" and "Girl" sound less sixtiesish but they are still catchy and, of course, feature the wonderful voices of Sclater and Ripley. "When She Wakes Tomorrow" could be easily mistaken for a Beatles' song if someone didn't know better. The same could go for most of Silver Sunshine's songs, actually, with "Miranda May" following. An altogether fab album is wrapped up with "Merry Go Round," another drug-induced sounding song with guitars that sound almost like part of "The End" when John, Paul, and George switch off on guitar every few bars, but slower and more psychadelic. I really can't praise this band enough, and I enourage any fan of this kind of music to buy their album. There are plenty of other bands that they are reminiscent of as well, like The Kinks and Herman's Hermits. They shamelessly recreate the sounds of the best music around, without being tiring and sounding re-hashed. Silver Sunshine are truly talented and I can't wait to hear what they come out with next!!

i just discovered Silver Sunshine through a friend who played the record for me.... i immediately went out and got it.
this is easily my favorite record that's come out this year. if you are into the kinks, the move, tomorrow, pink floyd etc. you will enjoy this well-crafted album and find yourself singing along. get on the bandwagon now before this band gets huge, because they will....
