5.0 out of 5 stars DON'T COOK AT HOME WITHOUT ONE! April 5, 2009
Look at my discussion of the Norpro which I also own. 1) of COURSE the handle burns!!!! would you rather have a wooden smell for a bit, or burnt plastic for longer? and metal would make you get welders gloves -- the IDEA is to put it under your pot and LEAVE it there -- so really, there's little use for the handle. These products with the holes in them will keep water, even in the space age layered metals of today's pots, at a 'steep', below a simmer --- at a 'steep' -- which is wonderful. Yes they will rust - and if you go camping yes you will need to put it in a plastic bag -- EVERY pan has a 'hot spot' -- weather it's your great grandmothers Lodge or Cascade or Fireside or what ever Castiron, or if it's a $400 Kuhn-Rikhon pressure cooker -- this will make that 'hot spot' go away -- it will allow you to cook tomato sauce ALL DAY without having to stand there to stir it every so often, so you can go out to the garden, visit your neighbors, go shopping - and come home and take your WOODEN spoon and stir the pot.

I've tried many ways over the past 50 years to keep the handle on, and none has worked -- so don't fight it -- I have a pair of vice grips set for this, and the vice grips cost about $2 as a counter special at an auto parts store and should cost you maybe $5 at a hard ware store -- you only need he small one -- and that's to do the final little fraction of an inch push this way or that.

I didn't believe it, but these ARE hard to find -- when I was looking for some for my girlfriend last Valentines day -- I was saved by the bell because the local cooking supply/hardware store called in the order with half an hour to spare so they would arrive on time.

1.0 out of 5 stars Wooden handle too close to hot eye February 13, 2008
Either I didn't notice the wooden handle, or I wasn't thinking when I made this purchase. The handle began to burn during use. Would not recommend this item to anyone. Found a better one with a folding metal handle locally and for a better final price.

After reading other comments, I removed the wooden handle and ran the ring through dishwasher before use. Used it with a Tagine on a gas stove and it performed beautifully.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cheap, simple, and WORKS GREAT! June 13, 2009
I have a ceramic cooktop (would prefer gas and a line has been run in the basement for "someday") but you can only turn these burners so low. I like to make cooked-half-a-day bolognese sauce without having to stir it every 10 to 15 minutes to keep it from scorching. The flame tamer makes this possible. I can go outside and do some gardening or anything else I want to do and do not have to worry about my sauce at all. Theoretically, could even alleviate the need for a double boiler with some dishes. Great for any dish that you wish to keep heat just below simmer.

PS Like other reviewer, Paul, I don't care about the handle, nor will I once I get my gas cooktop. Like him, I'll just let it burn off if it must and leave the diffuser on the burner til it cools ...hee hee.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works great and no smoking September 14, 2009

I ordered two of these, one of this brand and one Norpro. They're almost identical. There was a note enclosed that recommended washing before use to prevent smoking. I followed the recommendation and had absolutely no smoking or odor.

It works perfectly on my gas stove. I've been frustrated for years because I couldn't adjust the flame low enough to warm or gently simmer sauces and soups.

Yes, the wood handle singes near the metal, but it's better than melting plastic or a hot all-metal handle. It doesn't bother me at all. I'm just careful to place it out of direct contact with the flame.

It's definitely worth the price.

My stove has driven me crazy because I could not get it low enough to simmer. I read other reviews and decided to try this. I liked it so much, I ordered a second one. Finally the flames are tamed!

4.0 out of 5 stars GREAT Kitychen Tool
This item really makes any flame or pot a simmerer. Don't know how I ever got along with it. However the handle is flimsy but it hasn't burnt off yet as some had the problem.
