5.0 out of 5 stars Short and at it's sweetest!
A guide to all of the beers of the world would be a huge undertaking. A pocket size guide would almost seem impossible. However, Micheal Jackson can say more in one sentence than anyone else could say in a full paragraph. Micheal Jackson's review's are poetic and incredibly descriptive. He has a magical way of giving the reader an incredible insight and description...

Not the best book but not terrible either. I guess a lot of folks don't care for Bob Klein and get overheated easy about it. But he's a darn good writer and a sight more down to earth. Some of Jackson's choices strike me dead wrong but thats ok. He gets as uppity as his fans sometime and I just don't consider him the beer hound that Klein is. Neither one is my...

A guide to all of the beers of the world would be a huge undertaking. A pocket size guide would almost seem impossible. However, Micheal Jackson can say more in one sentence than anyone else could say in a full paragraph. Micheal Jackson's review's are poetic and incredibly descriptive. He has a magical way of giving the reader an incredible insight and description of a beer's sensory experience in just a few well chosen words. I can only imagine the knowledge that was edited out of this book in order to make it fit in your pocket.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Beer-Hunter's Bible, August 24, 2000

Brian Engel (Austin, TX USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The SIMON SCHUSTER POCKET GUIDE TO BEER 5TH EDITION: THE CONNOISSEUR'S COMPANION TO OVER 1,500 BEERS OF THE WORLD
This is the most thorough yet concise book about beer I've ever come across. On my 30-day whirlwind tour of Europe, this was the absolute most useful tool I had. I took it everywhere, consulted it constantly, and kept the tattered copy as my fondest souvenir.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best, February 15, 1999
By A Customer
This is *the best* of all the so-called beer guides available, bar none. Michael Jackson is world-recognized and well-respected, having actually earned his reputation as an authority on beer (unlike some johnny-come-lately beer authors who write their own claim to fame). Be sure and check out other Jackson works such as _The New World Guide to Beer_ and _The Beer Companion_ as they are also highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best companion guide to beer, July 27, 1998
The Pocket Guide to Beer by Michael Jackson is the best of the concise review books I have read. I find that his ratings are consistent, his descriptions informative, and his assessment well on the mark. He also keeps the descriptions down to earth, without the 'snobbery' found in some other review books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous, July 21, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The SIMON SCHUSTER POCKET GUIDE TO BEER 5TH EDITION: THE CONNOISSEUR'S COMPANION TO OVER 1,500 BEERS OF THE WORLD
Esteemed beer author Michael Jackson has once again produced an outstanding work of art. Unlike the blathering of a Johnny-come-lately, know-nothing like Robert Klein, Jackson has earned his reputation as the foremost authority on beer styles and brewerys. Klein, who prefers Miller to Sierra Nevada, Hoegaarden, and Thomas Hardy among others, is just the latest in a long line of pompous, ill-informed, buffoons trying desperately to disguise their own ignorance on a subject they claim to have expertise in. Sad, really. Jackson's body of work stands on its own merits in sharp contrast to that of the pathetic pretender Klein.

5.0 out of 5 stars An invaluable book for beer hunters, July 22, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The SIMON SCHUSTER POCKET GUIDE TO BEER 5TH EDITION: THE CONNOISSEUR'S COMPANION TO OVER 1,500 BEERS OF THE WORLD
Michael "The Beer Hunter" Jackson, the worlds most celebrated beer writer, has traveled extensively in search of good beer. His efforts show in the quality of this book. I have used it as a guide for finding interesting breweries and beers in both Europe and the United States. The beers that he recommends are consistently worth the effort of seeking out. There is no other book that provides so much concise and reliable advice on the beers of the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-have for anyone who wants to find good beer., July 21, 1998

This review is from: The SIMON SCHUSTER POCKET GUIDE TO BEER 5TH EDITION: THE CONNOISSEUR'S COMPANION TO OVER 1,500 BEERS OF THE WORLD
Michael Jackson, the British writer who virtually defined the term "beer writer," has collected the wisdom of his never ending travels in search of the perfect pint. The depth and breadth of his knowledge makes this a must-have book on the shelf (and in the pocket) of anybody who shares his passion for great beer. Ignore the pointless negative anonymous reviews and buy this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't believe the previous troll, July 21, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The SIMON SCHUSTER POCKET GUIDE TO BEER 5TH EDITION: THE CONNOISSEUR'S COMPANION TO OVER 1,500 BEERS OF THE WORLD
Jackson's _Pocket Guide_ is *the* book to take along when beer hunting. A so-called beer rating guide by self-proclaimed "expert" and acknowledged hack Robert Klein is, however, terrible and should be avoided. Pretentious and poorly researched, Klein's work is considered a joke among beer aficionados while Jackson is universally regarded as the world's foremost expert on beer styles.

Neither one is my personal guru of beer though and the light of heaven don't shine down on either guy's refrigerator (though Jackson likes some brew warm!!).
