The role-playing approach to learning is very interesting and has shown some very positive results in the classroom. This manual contains a wealth of information, but it is difficult for a beginner to know how to get started. A sample introductory lesson or two would have been helpful.

If you are going to engage in a SIMSOC in any situation or group, be certain you read the rules... plan a strategy.

Don't wait until you get there.

This is an awesome experience and you don't want to get left behind.

The irony of this book is that it is the text book that lays a foundation for most LARPs out their. You can clearly see where Mind's Eye theatre and most boofer larps at least pay homage.
The book is very simple to use and as such is great fun. It shows threw personal interaction how socieies function. It also alows you to see how effective a ruthless dictator can be in a safe enviornment. My sociology professors in Kenesaw State university use it, and I feel it is a great tool.
To add insult to ingury, the used price on campus is the same price as it is new on Amazon. WHAT a deal.

If you like to be manipulated, then by all means, play this game. I have grave doubts about the value of these exercises, or at least the conditions under which they are often administrated. I think it is downright dangerous to mess with people's heads, and try to get them into conflict.

So often these simulations are done in situations where the players are forced unknowing into "playing" by an employer or a school. There is no attempt to discover the stability of the players and no follow-up to discover if there are any lasting negative effects from the "play." I call that more than a little irresponsible. How this game develops leadership is a mystery to me. This is a gravy boat for someone, but not for the participants.
