A Simple Basic Sewing Machine that meets our needs,
By
This review is from: SINGER 2250 Tradition Basic 10-Stitch Sewing Machine (Misc.)
My wife needed a simple basic sewing machine to repair and make adjustments to our clothes. We decided on this model based on the low price and the Singer name. As we understand there are more Singer machines in service than all other brands together.
We found the DVD that came with the machine very helpful and between that and the owner's manual the setup was easy. Since then she is using it from time to time and, as it fulfills all our needs at an affordable price, we must give it a high rating. We would have hated to pay more for a sewing machine with more features that we were not going to use. This is a good reliable machine that fulfills our need for simplicity and ease of operation.

This is my first sewing machine, the first time I've used one. I love it, and hate to see it's rating so low due to reports of bobbin jamming. None of the 3 complaints mentioned that they even attempted to adjust the upper or lower tension adjustments. My machine jammed up the first time I used it but I read the instructions and adjusted the tensions- problem solved. Adjusting the lower bobbin tension is a touchy feely operation, but not hard to do. From the instructions- "To test the bobbin thread tension, remove the bobbin case and bobbin and hold it by suspending it by the thread. Jerk it once or twice. If the tension is correct, the thread will unwind by about an inch or two. If the tension is too tight, it does not unwind at all. If the tension is too loose, it will drop too much. To adjust, turn the small screw on the side of the bobbin case." There is a screwdriver included to make this adjustment. It clamps the thread, so a thicker or thinner thread could mean an adjustment is necessary. Mine needed to be loosened for the first spool of thread I used. This bobbin case is polished stainless steel, so it's not wearing out soon. I guess the screw might get loose someday, my local Jo-Ann fabric store sells new complete bobbin cases for $2.99. The upper thread tension dial requires a lot of adjustment depending on the work. A sewing machine isn't a hair dryer. They are complex weird monsters and there is a learning curve, no way around it. You've got to tune em like a guitar. This machine is heavy and stable and has a pleasant look and feel. It disturbs me there is no inclusion of oil or lubrication instructons. I doubt it's never necessary, so I got a tube of Official Singer Oil, a very thick oil with a look and smell like melted butter. I recomend it. I've only had my 2250 for a week. 5 stars so far.

We got this sewing machine as a x-mas present and were very excited to begin sewing. It was great to start with...for like the first 6 hours. The DVD was helpful, and it had the basics for what you need to get started. Of course I found sewing to be extremely easy, so in the spirit of D.I.Y. I started sewing like a mad man.
Well...wouldn't you know that after a short while the bobbin kept jamming. As a child I never remember this happening to my mom, and when I called her with the problem she agreed. I took apart the whole assemble, lubed it up, cleaned it...worked for a bit and then jammed even worse. I've never heard of such a thing....this is a total bummer. I think I got a lemon, but regardless, we out grew this machine literally within hours. We've decided to return it and upgrade to the Brother computerized 60 stitch. We're very excited about it. http://www.amazon.com/Brother-CS6000I-60-Stitch-Computerized-Functions/dp/B000JQM1DE/ref=pd_sbs_k_2

Professionally used everyday for 2 years... never any issues whatsoever :),

Like most of you here I bought this machine at Target when it was on sale. I run my own clothing and accessories line and use my machine about 5 days a week for hours on end. So when my old singer from the 70s finally gave out, I wanted to just pick up a "cheap, temporary" machine that would get me through the season I was in. Little did I know that I'd be happy with this machine and continue to use it for the next two years without so much as any issue (and never even had it serviced or anything). I also teach a sewing class and MANY of my students have purchased this particular machine to learn on... again, without any issues (we're talking a dozen or more total beginners here). I find it VERY odd that this machine should receive so many horrible reviews... almost all of them citing a bobbin issue. If you are used to a machine that has a top-loading bobbin (the bobbin drops down simply into the throat plate) then you will need to understand that this bobbin installs differently. Whereas a top-loading bobbin will be placed into the machine in the shape of a "P" (with the thread going off to the left of the bobbin like the shape of the letter P), this type of bottom-loading bobbin needs to be inserted into the opening in the bobbin case (the metal housing you remove to replace the bobbin) in the shape of a "q"... with the thread going off to the right of the bobbin itself. Also, you must ensure that the small arm of the bobbin case points to the sky and almost "clicks" into place (into the groove that it's meant for) when you insert it. And that the bobbin thread comes completely through the tension area in the bobbin case and snaps "into" the hole in the side of the case, pulling almost freely with just a smidge of tension on the thread as it's being pulled. Just wanted to give a few pointers in case anyone is having a hard time with this.
However, I only give this machine 4 stars because it does NOT come with a zipper foot. Never in my life have I ever heard of such a thing. It comes with all kind of necessary accessories but NO zipper foot. If you plan to install any zippers be sure to pick up a standard Singer zipper foot at a sewing store to accommodate you.

I have had this machine for about a year. It was given to me brand new as a gift. It worked great at first but then, like so many reviews I have read, the bobbin started jamming and the thread starting looping. I think this machine would be good for someone who will rarely use it. I wouldn't recommend it for anyone who sews often or who sews anything tougher than tissue. It got to the point where I had to take it apart every five minutes to unjam the bobbin. This machine is not worth the trouble!

I received this for Christmas from my husband. My first time using this machine was nothing but frustrating! I tried to sew my daughter a simple skirt that should have taken less than an hour... 5 hours later my mom had to finish it for me on her machine. I encountered the same problems with the bobbin that others voiced- and yes- I fixed the tension. I tried emailing Singer to find out about the many problems and three weeks later I have yet to hear back from them... I returned the machine the following day. Don't waste your money on this machine unless you have a lot of spare time to fix it's many problems.

I just bought this machine, and love it. It runs so smoothly. The bobbin has not jammed on it, as others have complained. Perhaps they had the bobbin threaded backwards? That will make it jam up, because I've used older machines that have the same bobbin assembly, and you have to have the tension right, and the thread going in the correct direction, which is clockwise.

Excellent budget machine,
This review is from: SINGER 2250 Tradition Basic 10-Stitch Sewing Machine (Misc.)
I have worked on industrial and domestic machines of various brands and this machine is a good buy. I have had no bobbin jamming problems, my only gripe is that zigzag is not centered, it is shifted to the right. It is especially noticeable on narrow zigzag, as it becomes wider the issue disappears. Apart from this, I have no complaints.

I bought this machine on sale at Target last Christmas when I was visiting my mother. I needed to put together a pretty extensive sewing project for my niece, and my mother's machine was dead. No way was I flying my Bernina cross-country...
The machine worked fine out of the box once the tension was adjusted, which is standard on any new machine and for that matter when you change thread weights it's often required. Had plenty of variety in stitches for what I needed done, hummed right along throughout the project, which included multiple layers to sew through. Now I'm looking for one for a friend as a gift, as she wants to try out sewing. I think it's a great little starter machine. And it's handy for me to know that I have a nice machine waiting for me when I visit my mother, and can take projects along.

Good serviceable machine,
This review is from: SINGER 2250 Tradition Basic 10-Stitch Sewing Machine (Misc.)
I bought this machine yesterday. This is the first machine I've ever owned, and I hadn't even used one for about 15 years or so. On the whole, the machine is very easy to set up, although I was a little confused about how to set up the bobbin properly. Once I figured out how to properly thread the bobbin case, though, I was all set. I was able to sew 6 pocket linings in less than an hour with very little trouble. Time will tell if any other problems arise, but so far I think it's a good deal for a solid machine.
