Disappointed...,
This review is from: SINGER 5040 40-Stitch-Function Sewing Machine (Kitchen)
I bought this machine from the "Gold Box" for my wife's anniversary. She unpacked it and was able to sew a few stitches before the needle caught on the needle plate and bent. She put the second needle in and watched it hit the needle plate. So for now the machine is unusable, which is disappointing to say the least. The nearest authorized Singer center is about 90 miles from us, so it is going to be inconvenient at best to get the machine replaced or repaired. I imagine that the majority of these machines work properly out of the box, (obviously most of the reviewers are happy with thier machines), I think it's important to know that there is at least one that wasn't. The needle is only off by a fraction of an inch, and it did work for a few stitches, so it may have passed some level of quality testing before leaving the factory, and Amazon.com's price for the machine is excellent. We just got a lemon this time. The other thing that is somewhat disconcerting is that the date on the manual is 1994 and the date on the warrenty was 1998, so while this machine came sealed in the box, it isn't exactly "new", and while the manual is available on the Singer web site, ... you can't buy one of these machines there. Additional Info: The Singer Service center we brought the machine to took 5 minutes to make an adjustment that fixed the problem. He said that the particular problem happens in shipping if the machine is dropped or jarred.

Great Machine,

This is not the first sewing machine I have ever used but it is the first that I have owned. When I decided that I wanted to learn how to sew and do a few crafts and make a few clothes for my family, I shopped for certain critiera.1. Price I shopped for 5 months looking for a machine and compared prices with features, mostly. This machine had alot more features then most machines for [the price]. This machine comes with several feet and a easy to follow manual, explaining what all the stitching is for.

Misleading photo,

My new singer 5040 was delivered yesterday in the middle of the longest winter I can remember. The machine itself is great especially for such an affordable price. I have lots of projects all ready to be sewed since I was waiting for this machine to replace another beloved Singer that died. My disappointment was in finding one bobbin packed with it. Since bobbins I have on hand won't fit I'll have the inconvenience of rethreading that one over and over until the roads clear enough to go to a store that has them. The photo plainly shows 6 bobbins and 2 of each attachment. I got one of each attachment and only 1 bobbin. If purchasing this product you might want to plan ahead.

Great sewing machine for the price,
This review is from: SINGER 5040 40-Stitch-Function Sewing Machine (Kitchen)
I recently bought the Singer model 5040 from my "Gold Box" and have been extremely pleased with it. I'm 24 years old, and I taught myself how to sew as a child on my mother's Sears or Necchi machine (I can't remember which brand, but I think that my grandmother bought that machine in the early 1960s). My only complaint is that I guess I am just not used to plastic machines. A large percentage of this Singer machine is plastic, and its electrical warranty is only good for two years. However, the mechanical warranty is good for 20 years. I miss the metal bobbins and sturdiness of my mom's machine... Anyhow, its manual is easy to read, and I got acquainted with the machine, had the bobbins threaded, and was sewing in about ten minutes. It has 40 different stitch options, but so far I've only used about five. I will probably experiment with some of the others as I get more comfortable with decorative applique work, etc. I think that the Singer 5040 is a darn good value for its price.

I bought this sewing machine after breaking the machine I inherited from my mom. I had heard by some to stay away from Singers, but after much research decided to purchase this machine. I have bene very, very pleased with it. I sew quite a bit and I have never had any problems with this Singer.

nealry impossible to raise the bobbin thread successfully,
By A Customer
This review is from: SINGER 5040 40-Stitch-Function Sewing Machine (Kitchen)
Every time I've used this machine I've spent over an hour trying to raise the bobbin thread successfully. Everything appears fine until you sew, and then if the thread doesn't tangle in the bobbin area it appears to be loopy underneath the fabric. If the bobbin is loaded "just right" it sews fine (without adjusting settings on the machine). I thought it was just me until a much more experienced person had exactly the same problem - it shouldn't be this difficult! After reading the other reviews I'm suspecting there may be a problem with that part of the machine - stay away from this model.

Waste of money - Poorly made,
By "mulan2" (Wheaton, IL United States) - See all my reviews

My husband bought this sewing machine for me for Christmas. I was very excited to receive it. The first time I got it out to use it, it jammed, the thread tangled, the needle bent, and the zig-zag stich would not work. Eventually I discovered the pattern module was in wrong from the factory, which caused the zig-zag stich not to work. I also realized that the reason it was jamming was that the thread was catching on the broken bobbin holder. My husband and I brought the machine to a professional repair shop to have them look at it, and the owner said that the bobbin holder was not lubricated, and one of the parts was assembled incorrectly. He recomended that we return it. We followed his advise, and since we pay close attention to the reviews that other people give on these sights, decided to warn everyone else about how severely dissapointing this machine is. In general, this machine is poorly made, the instruction manual is useless, and we expected much better from a Singer.

twice to the shop in 6 months - not happy,

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: SINGER 5040 40-Stitch-Function Sewing Machine (Kitchen)
We bought this sewing machine in March and my wife is learning to sew. We do not use the machine very often so it is very disappointing that we are now on our second visit to the shop. The first one happened just within the 90 day warranty, and we were able to send to official center 60 miles away. That problem was clearly a manufacturing defect where a part came loose inside. This second problem is the actual sewing is now not correct. Appears to be a tension problem, but everything appears ok. At this point, we are on the edge of buying a new machine that is more robust. I will wait and see what the shop says tomorrow. Could cost us more to fix it than it's worth. Timing is terrible, as my wife started a class two days ago. The reliability of this product is unacceptable. Very unhappy. (Are all the new machines plastic now? Miss the old metal units and metal bobbins).

Buyer beware. This is not your mother's Singer.,

This review is from: SINGER 5040 40-Stitch-Function Sewing Machine (Kitchen)
Buyer beware. This is not your mother's Singer. They sold it off years ago and have used the name to sell cheap and poor designed sewing machines. Not happy with at all. I have used it 4 times in 1 year, very light repair stuff. Now it is totally unusable I have tried to contact Singer many times by email and they tell me to call between the hours or 9 and 5 Monday through Friday while at the machine. This is very hard to do when you work for a living. A local repair shop said it is the poor design of the bobin assembly and needs to be replaced, but doesn't recommend it because the replacement is just as badly designed. And like many of the other reviews a Singer repair shop is not close at all.

Easy as Pie,

I bought about a year ago, I needed a machine that did not cost too much but also had a lot of features to learn with. I am very pleased with this machine, I have made several things including, curtains, pants, dresses, sofa slipcovers, blankets, and several other items I cannot think of. I have not had to take the machine in for any maintenance, I perform all of it myself so far. I feel it is very easy to operate and it certainly gets the job done. I think the next sewing machine I get will be alot more advance options but for a beginner or for someone who does not need alot of different functions this is perfect. My boys 10 and 5 also use the machine to make different items. Love my machine. |
