The Singing Cure Paul Newham

The Only Course on Singing for Health - When Sigmund Freud developed his revolutionary model for treating psychological problems, he called it "the talking cure." Freud embraced the ancient Greek concept of catharsis, while ignoring how it was originally practiced: through the expression of extreme vocal sounds, which resembled songs more than words. On The Singing Cure, vocal researcher Paul Newham presents the only professional training course in therapeutic singing. So effective that it has been accredited by England’s Royal Society of the Arts, The Singing Cure presents a complete course in Voice Movement Therapy™ to unmask your natural singing voice and use it as a powerful healing instrument. Utilizing simple exercises adapted from many vocal healing traditions, including indigenous cultures, Newham helps you break down your voice into its key ingredients. Step by step, you use sounds and songs to investigate who you are and how you feel, and to express yourself to the world with confidence and clarity. Now you can learn how your voice can help you tame the "monsters" in your life—anger, grief, shame, and other difficult emotions—and reclaim a beautiful tool for living fully, with The Singing Cure.

This review is from: The Singing Cure (Audio Cassette)
I got the tapes in hoping to improve my voice. Paul Newham has a wonderful voice and "bedside manner". I found his voice exercises extremely hard to follow. He could do things with his voice that I could never do. His exercises were also very long. He often demonstrated a technique and then told the listener to do it. We were left on our own as to what and how he actually did. It would have been much better if he were to demonstrate an easy technique and then slowly made it harder. he demonstrated a technique and then did a completely different technique. Also after he demonstrated, he should do it with the listener so we can follow along.

Another irritation was that he seemed to be in love with his own music compositions. He had us singing along with the compositions. I did not care for the compositions musically and they were hard to follow. One has to memorize the melody and the lyrics, much less the music technique. It would have been much better to use some folk or popular mucis that people are aquainted with and sing to that.

His intuition with his students personally seemed intriguing. I would like to take a lesson from him personally but his tapes were of no use to me.
