I still like them better than my USA made Craftsman.

My dad has a couple of these same ratchets he's had for 20+ years and they still work perfectly.

It still holds up to abuse well, and has a very smooth ratcheting mechanism.

If you're looking for a NICE 3/8 ratchet, you probably can't do much better than this model. Like the other SK ratchets I've recently bought, this thing has good heft to it and is smooth as glass. The knurled end of the handle is very well done and gives you very positive grip on the ratchet. I imagine this would work well for anyone that got it dirty or oily, although it's much to beautiful for me to be that careless with it.

The ratcheting mechanism is quite fine and exceptionally smooth. I absolutely LOVE the sound of an SK round head ratchet click and if you buy one of these I think you'll agree. It's smooth, very quiet, very positively engaging and very comfortable in hand. Well balanced, -extremely- well polished and best of all it's still made in the USA (unlike most).

This ratchet is easily one of my new favorite 3/8 ratchets (and I have a number of them!) and I'd gladly buy another or recommend it to anyone else looking for a good 3/8 ratchet (take a hint!).

Buy one for yourself and see why people love SK ratchets so much, and why this particular design has been around for several decades. Put one in your hand you'll be sold on it, without a doubt.

I have had a 3/8 ratchet like this since my tools were stolen back in 1976. I have a backup of the same ratchet ,which is even older.38 years later it works as well as it did when I bought it. Its strong point back then as now is that its manufacturing tolerance was much closer than the rest and there is little slop side to side and it is of 60 tooth design. The finer tooth construction is of greatest use when your working in tight quarters without a lot of swing room. This ratchet will grab on the reverse swing at 6 degrees versus 10 degrees for a 36 tooth ratchet. I have sk,craftsman, easco ,Williams and have worked with snap-on. Although its handy sometimes, ratchets with a lever can be a real pain to deal with in close quarters especially when your having to deal with no visibility of the nut or bolt. A head that is not round also causes access problems in close quarters. The quick release on the craftsmans are nice but after I was using one 8 years back, releasing the transmission linkage on an explorer and the darn socket accidently released and bounced on my head..I stopped using it.
The thing I like the most about this ratchet over my others is that by opening it up every year or so and relubing it with fresh light grease and oil it turns in reverse with minimum drag. This way when the ratchet stops ratcheting ,the nut or bolt is now finger loose.
To the person that broke theirs with a cheater bar: I would be too embarrassed to tell that story....hope you weren't working on something expensive with a customer watching.
Even if you already have a snap on,craftsman, or whatever...I recommend buying one of these and use it when your in a situation requiring finesse.

This is a replacement for an original piece which my husband lost after 40 years as a professional mechanic. He loves it. It is very well made and just what he wanted.

Very smooth and quality tool. The only reason I did not give it a five is because I used it as a replacement tool for a 3/8 drive I lost some years ago to complete my SK tool set I have had for over 20 years and the knurling does not seem as quite as nice as my 1/2 inch drive. I may be being a little too critical (these used to come in metal boxes It is all plastic nowadays). I still like them better than my USA made Craftsman.

Overall this is a very good quality tool and a better price on AMAZON than going to the next town to buy it from Granger.

The ratchet mechanism is smooth and strong. My only complaint is the chrome around the top of the head. There are several inconsistencies in the chrome that felt like someone had dropped it or used it as a hammer. As much as it costs I expect a flawless finish. I sent it back and got another one that had the same problem. I sent that one back and bought a Tekton for much less that seems just as strong and a perfect finish for much less.

Best ratchet of all time!! Solid, Crisp, rugged, perfect chrome, a classic. My Dad has owned one since the early 1970s, still works great, got a free repair kit from SK. This mechanism is a dual pawl system unlike a lot of ratchets that have a dial and one pawl at the bottom. After searching for some time for a good ratchet, I still came back to buy this classic tool.

I've owned an SK fractional socket set for over 30 years now (purchased when SK was still part of Dresser). I've taken care of that set, and it continues to give solid, reliable service. My usage pattern is closer to monthly than daily, so I don't represent an acid test, but the sockets and ratchet still look almost new. The set included the 45170 ratchet.

I also own a used - very well used - 45170 ratchet. This has been ridden hard and put away wet - the chrome is worn off around the head and a couple of other high-wear areas. When I got it, the ratchet mechanism wasn't engaging, and it just spun in both directions.

Five minutes cleaning the ratchet mechanism -- if you haven't taken these apart before, it's not that hard as long as you don't lose the parts -- and things were clicking like they should. SK also sent me a free rebuild kit -- now that it's working, though, I guess I'll save that for another 30 years to see if I really need it.

SK, by the way, was owned by Facom, a French tool company, but is now an independent US company again. They will get my business whenever possible.

The only flaw in the SK ratchet design is an occasional need to hold the socket when switching directions. At least one Amazon reviewer has complained about this. However, I also have a well-used Craftsman ratchet, and one must sometimes do the same for it as the internal parts wear.

So...highly recommended. I'm looking forward to another 30 years use of this pair of ratchets. Then I'll pass them to my grandchildren...
