5.0 out of 5 stars My clubs made it there - in perfect condition!!!
I bought this case with the advise from a friend, I couldn't have made a better decision. This case not only protected my clubs but made the hassle at the airport minimal. I love that there is an unconditional lifetime warranty on this product, plus it's made in America! Thanks SKB for making a great trip with no hiccups.... i will be looking to buy a few rifle cases for...

3.0 out of 5 stars Great case but requires a HUGE car trunk, November 22, 2006
This review is from: SKB 2SKB-4812WS ATA Standard Golf Travel Case (Sports)
I bought this case and loved it. I couldn't have been more pleased with its sturdiness, rolling ease, and quality of construction. My average sized stand bag fit nicely without much effort and there was room enough for shoes and other odd items inside.

HOWEVER, this case is so huge that it is nearly impossible to travel with if you rent a car. Don't be fooled by the length, sure you can fit a 49" driver in any trunk, but this case is 14" in diameter, so it is much larger than the length would lead you to believe. I recently flew to Las Vegas, and the only rental car with a big enough trunk was a Lincoln Continental (believe me I tried every trunk they had and this was the only one big enough). I usually rent an economy or full size car, so upgrading to a luxury car cost me a lot of extra money--I could have spent that money on a new driver! You can always try the back seat, but I needed it for people so that wasn't an option for me, though an economy or compact car will still be too small.

So, I have sold it and plan to buy a Club Glove Burst Proof travel bag which I have used before with good results. At least with a soft sided travel bag you can remove the clubs and fold up the bag to fit it all in any trunk or hatchback.

It's a great case, just be aware that it is not easy to travel with, you need a gigantic trunk.

I purchased this case for my daughter's fencing gear as she was traveling on planes nationally and internationally this summer. I lined the remainder of the interior with similar foam to help pad her fencing gear - about another $10 in materials. It's maiden voyage in June was on Delta and was without a hitch - no extra baggage charge as it is a solid golf case (even if we don't use it as such. Fedexing it Greece caused a large frakus with customs as they do not allow "weapons" into the country, but suffice it to say everything showed up untouched and intact. A great case! We will recommend to all our fencing buddies!

When this arrived I was very impressed. From the moment I took it out of the box I could tell it was a well constructed quality product. It also looks great. I closely inspected the wheels, locks, handles, hinges, etc. - and while I wouldn't want to try this - I think I could take a hammer to any part of this thing and not break it. You can also tell they put some thought in to the engineering and design. For example, the in-line wheels are recessed into the case with protective covers on the side, and the latches are protected so they won't make contact if (i.e., when) the case is dropped on its side.

Right after I placed my order, I went back and read the description and looked at the photo. I realized there was no mention of a TSA lock, and the photo shows standard metal latches with no apparent place for a user supplied lock. However, I called the company the next day and they said the photo is from an older version and all their golf cases now come with TSA locks. The photo for the Deluxe Case (2SKB-4814W) shows the correct lock and latches. There are three latches, with the center one locking.

Without question, this is a big case, but not really any larger that it has to be to fit a standard set of clubs and drivers. It stands just slightly over 50" and the depth and width are 12-1/4" x 13." So it's fairly efficient considering you can pack a 12" standard bag and clubs. As others have noted, you could have trouble fitting it in a trunk or transporting it, but that's probably true with most hard-shell (non collapsing) cases. I considered a hybrid bag/hard-top case, which would be a good option for somebody concerned about size, but for maximum protection I would definitely recommend this case. It's really not much harder to wheel around than a hybrid (or soft case, which I would not recommend for airline travel), and shouldn't cost any extra to check than standard baggage for most airlines. Many airlines have specific allowances for sports and other equipment; it may exceed the the maximum dimensions as long as it meets the weight requirement. They also won't make you sign a liability waiver. Compared to hybrid and soft cases, this case is a little heavy at about 18 lbs empty, but even fully loaded should easily weigh-in under the 50 lbs max set by most airlines. Another disadvantage of a hard case for some may be storage, but I just use it to store my clubs and it doesn't take up any additional space the the garage.

5.0 out of 5 stars Golf Club Hard-shell Case, August 31, 2008
This review is from: SKB 2SKB-4812WS ATA Standard Golf Travel Case (Sports)
After having owned two soft-shell cases in the past, I found out two things:
1. The zippers and seams simply can't hold up to the Airline Neanderthals and thier cousins in the TSA
2 - Some airlines (Southwest, for example) insist on making me sign a damage waiver if checking soft-shells

I use a "backpacker carry bag" so my clubs fit snugly within the confines of this case. I can get my sticks, accessories, shoes, rain gear, etc. into this unit and close it without having to have my kids stand on it to get it closed. It's compact, easy to roll around, and is *almost* indestructable.

I say *almost* because after one trip across the States, someone (baggage handlers or TSA?) had ripped off one of the handles. After getting it home and making a call to SKB, they told me the handles were under warranty and sent me a replacement set. two days later, and some effort with a screwdriver and small wrench (actually a green-repair tool <g>) I had the new handle on and was back at it! Great customer service from the manufacturer!

I needed a rugged case for out of town fencing tournaments. I saw that some fencers had used it and liked it. I feel the same way. I can pack 5 epees, a mask, snacks, testing equipment, gloves, etc in it. The locks are solid as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars For tripods and light stands, September 18, 2009

This review is from: SKB 2SKB-4812WS ATA Standard Golf Travel Case (Sports)
I bought this case for an international tour with tripods and tall light stands (for audio recording). I packed it up with all my stands and cables (97 pounds worth!!) It made the round-trip PDX->AMS->OTP and back again with only a minor problem (the end of one of the stands punched through the top end). Recommend reinforcing the ends if you are carrying heavy objects with sharp ends! :-) Overall, it held up great, even with all that weight. If I had it to do over, I would buy one of these again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Lightstands and tripods, January 6, 2009
This review is from: SKB 2SKB-4812WS ATA Standard Golf Travel Case (Sports)
I purchased this golf travel case to transport my photo studio lightstands (48") and tripods. It works very well in this application and the cost was substantially lower than hard or soft cases in this size that are sold specifically for this purpose. Quality of materials and workmanship is excellent! Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Not Just a Golf Case, September 8, 2009

This review is from: SKB 2SKB-4812WS ATA Standard Golf Travel Case (Sports)
I purchased this case for my son's fencing gear after seeing several fencers using golf travel bags. I couldn't be happier. It is perfect for protecting gear when traveling. With a soft-sided bag there is always a risk that equipment will be damaged by less-than-careful baggage handlers at the airport. No worries here. It locks too, which adds an extra level of comfort when you have to leave the bag unattended at a tournament.

Took this case on a golf trip to Florida. No problem and it held up well. It was not big enough to hold my cart bag, so I used my walking bag which was no big deal. I got my bag and shoes in it and that was pretty much it. It would not fit in the trunk of my Sebring convertible or the car I rented which had a fairly nice trunk. That could be a problem if you need the back seat for something or someone else. However, I can't imagine a hard cover being any smaller. If you only use it occasionally and don't want to spend the extra $50 or more dollars for a bigger case, this one is for you.
