4.0 out of 5 stars Great, if Your Cymbals All Have Bells, January 9, 2011
By
This review is from: SKB ATA 24 Cymbal Vault with Handle and Wheels (Electronics)
This is a very high-quality case. Heavy-duty construction throughout, and what I consider a very important feature; the handle is molded into the case half that actually holds the cymbals.

The wheels and the expanding handle are very nice features, as is the small internal bag for holding a drum key or whatever else you want. It also includes 4 cushions to go between cymbals.

There were a few things I didn't like. The sleeve around the center post is too soft, and got mashed down by the nut and mushroomed. When I received it, my cymbals would not even slide over the sleeve. There are features molded into the case to give you a grip to separate the case halves. I think those features are a little on the small side. There is a sharp edge where the strap goes around the outside. This edge had already made a permanent crease in the strap, and it would only be a matter of time before the strap began to fray. The edge should have a chamfer or a radius.

The real deal-breaker for me though is that there are features in the case designed to support the cymbals, and the cymbal bell would go down inside these features. However, my Quick Beat hi-hats have a flat bottom cymbal, so it won't "nest" with the other cymbals. I would have no choice but to put the bottom H.H. cymbal on the top of the stack, and then when I tightened the nut, it would be putting continuous stress on the cymbal, using it to hold in all of the others. In the Zildjian cymbal case I use now, I just put the flat cymbal in first, then all of the others, from large to small. The nut clamps all of the bells, and none of the cymbals are under any tension.

I didn't see any way around this problem with the SKB case, so I had to send it back, unfortunately. I would have liked to have kept it and used it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Makes carrying cymbals around easy for a gal like me!, February 5, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: SKB ATA 24 Cymbal Vault with Handle and Wheels (Electronics)
I've read the other reviews, so I have to note a couple things to start:

*All of my cymbals have bells (Zildjian K Custom Hybrids)

*I carry 3 cymbals and two hats

*I haven't noticed any undue pressure on the bells where I have to screw them in, but I leave the case to lay flat in my car or my apartment all of the time.

I'm a big fan of this cymbal case. For starters, my drum teacher has this case and is a pro who tours around the world. I think he's had this case for the last 13 years and it's still in good condition. So I followed in his foot steps and bought it. I know it's more expensive than a lot of other cases out there, but here's what makes it worth it:

*Lifetime warranty--who can beat that?

*It's got wheels! I much prefer to roll around all of my hardware than carry it.

*It has extra pockets where I keep my moon gels, felts, etc.

*I can throw anything on top of this case in my car, and I know FOR SURE that my cymbals will not be damaged.

I mean, it does what it is supposed to do--keep my cymbals safe. I can't really ask for more than that.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sturdy, but Lots of Wasted Space., April 20, 2011
By
Sean A.M. (Englewood, Colorado, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: SKB ATA 24 Cymbal Vault with Handle and Wheels (Electronics)
I bought this because I like to put all of my cymbals in one case, and after several tours/shows where I've had to carry my cymbal case up/down stairs and across cities, I decided that some wheels and sliding rails would really help.

That aspect of this product is great; the case has 2 sturdy roller-skate-style wheels mounted in the bottom, and a one-piece, heavy-duty retractable plastic handle which doubles as a sliding rail. The case also has a handy velcro pouch on the inside, which I find is perfect for carrying a hi-hat clutch, or some spare sleeves and washers to protect my cymbals from stands which may not have those things installed. Also included: 4 circular pads for protecting the cymbals from each other, and while these are well-made and a good idea, I get the same functionality with less bulk from a 50-cent sheet of felt from the hobby store.

This SKB case also can accommodate a 24" cymbal, so if I ever find one of those I like I'll be able to safely bring it on-tour.

(I'm thinking Istanbul Agop Matt Chamberlain...)

Another reviewer complained about crushing the softer plastic sleeve lining the mounting shaft, and SKB must have upgraded the product since then; I really thought the sleeve was just the right kind of material, and was a sturdy/rigid and thick plastic sleeve, which does a great job of protecting my cymbals from the central shaft. I wish that my Zildjian cymbal safes had come with something like this.

Unfortunately, those are the only things I like about this case.

One of SKB's selling-points is that many of their cases have their patented "Roto-X" pattern, and thus (allegedly) stack with all other SKB cases. I own a large rolling SKB case for hardware, so I thought this was a great feature; it would keep my cymbal case from falling-off the hardware case while stacked atop it. However, that's not really how it works. If you look at the photo of the product you'll notice that the relief section of the "Roto-X" pattern is blocked by the retractable handle, thus precluding the possibility of stacking the cymbal case right-side-up and locking into the "Roto-X" pattern. The only possibility for "Roto-X" stacking is thus upside-down atop other upside-down SKB cases, or underneath other SKB cases, and I'm not really into the idea of stacking things atop my cymbals, or stacking all my SKB cases upside-down.

Furthermore: the inside of the case has several moulded protrusions (you can see the inside of these trapezoids adjacent to the retractable handle-housing in the photo) which are designed to support the bow of the first cymbal placed inside the case. This is the same idea behind the foam lining on the outer-section inside of of the Zildjian cymbal safe, if anyone is familiar with those. These protrusions are all thoughtfully padded with a piece of foam to protect the cymbals from the hard plastic case.

However, the protrusions are so high that when you place your first cymbal in the case (presumably the ride cymbal, or the cymbal with the biggest and deepest bell) the cymbal bow rests on the protrusions instead of the cymbal bell resting on the felt washer in the middle. In fact, there was so much space between the bell of my ride cymbal and the (included) felt washer that I had enough room to stack another 2 felt washers before the cymbal bell made contact and was supported. What's more is that -- after trying to switch to this case from my Zildjian cymbal safe -- I couldn't fit as many cymbals in the SKB case (which is somehow thicker and generally larger), and I really feel that those protrusions should be almost a full INCH shorter so that drummers can actually use all the space inside the case if they desire. There's an awful lot of wasted air-space, and if I want to use the same number of cymbals I usually use then I need to carry a separate case.

I don't use felt washers to separate my cymbals; I use thin sheets of felt which I purchased from the hobby store to save space, but this doesn't help me with the SKB case, and I'm pretty sure it's because of those huge moulded supports/protrusions. I usually carry 7 cymbals (Ride, Hi-Hats, 2 Crashes, China, Splash), and the SKB website says that this case will hold "as many as seven cymbals," but that is clearly not the case. Yes, the profile of the China (which has to be stacked last due to the cup size) contributes to the lack of fit, but I never had any such problem with the Zildjian cymbal safe, which is a smaller case overall. In fact, even after removing the china and trying to fit six cymbals inside the SKB case, the lid still didn't fit properly.

(If only my Zildjian cymbal safe had wheels and a retractable handle...)

If I had to buy another rolling cymbal case it wouldn't be this one, but I'm going to keep using it until I find someone (who uses less cymbals) to buy it off me, or maybe I'll get crafty and alter it to suit my needs. I wish I had bought one of those older Gator Rolling Cymbal cases instead. If you're a ride, crash, & hats-only kind of player than this case will be just fine for you, but there's still a ton of wasted space for such a large case.
