I've bought many rifle cases over the years. After buying this one I haven't needed to buy any more. When it comes to travelling with long guns as checked luggage in the hold of an airplane, some cases are obviously too flimsy to protect your valuable goods from baggage handlers. Others seem sturdy but are destroyed after one trip.

I've read online somewhere that large oversized luggage of any type is frequently targeted for special abuse by baggage handlers. They see this as a lesson to travelers who make their job more difficult. In one online account, an ex-baggage handler told how he and co-workers would intentionally try to break the wheels off of overly heavy rolling suitcases.

On one trip a large seemingly sturdy metal rifle case of an other brand was completely destroyed after just one flight. One of the two locks was smashed, as was a hinge and corner cap. A large dent was gouged out in the side. Inside the case, my rifle's rear iron sight was broken. After that I realized I needed something better.

This SKB case could survive even the gorilla-in-the-cage abuse from the old American Tourister TV commercials. The SKB is designed with protection against such intentional abuse in mind. Heavy molded plastic bumpers protect the hinges, corners and locks. Vertical and longitudinal ribs of thicker plastic protect the contents. Somewhere there is a website that show this brand of case surviving a truck driving over it with the contents undamaged. At only approximately twice the price of lesser cases it gives you peace of mind when tranporting your valuable firearms. The case is heavy at over 20 lbs and may create weight issues loaded with two 10 lb rifles or shotguns. The double gun model conveniently has sturdy low profile wheels for easy rolling.

I purchased this case for my husband and he loves it. According to him, it secures two scoped rifles without any shift when he handles the case. His two Savage rifles have oversize bolts and the case closes w/o any trouble. He likes the locks and the wheels are an added bonus. It's very sturdy and well constructed. It is heavy when fully loaded so it's nice to have a padded carry handle. All interior sides are cushioned for all around protection. It hasn't been airline tested yet, but it looks ready to handle that challenge.

I ponied up the extra money for this case based on what I was seeing in the various sporting goods stores, i.e. Bass Pro Shops, Sports Authority, etc. I needed something to protect some older shotguns I inherited recently. I wanted a case to protect them as well as keep my young son out of them should he decide to get nosy and I think I've found it in the SKB. While I have not traveled with it yet, I feel it could handle anything the airlines could dish out. Solid, sturdy construction throughout and the lifetime warranty puts my mind at ease.

Very heavy duty case inside and out. Was a little concerned when I first got it because the end latches (the ones with the locks) didn't seem to close very solidly. But once you lock them it doesn't seem to matter. They aren't opening. After the first airline round trip it still looked like it did when I bought it which is more than I can say for the aluminum case I previously used. Holds 2 shotguns and 4 boxes of ammo no problem. It has a "bunk" style foam divider which is nice so you don't have to worry about the guns banging into each other if they shift when being tossed by TSA. If this was not a concern I think the case could hold 4 shotguns pretty easily. Last star not given just because I think all 4 latches should have locking mechanisms for a case of this price, not just the end two. But I think SKB will send you locking replacements for those two at no-charge if you call them. Also hard to beat a lifetime warranty and damage reimbursement.

I bought this case after having seen my brother-in-law's by the same manufacturer. The only difference in mine and his, mine has plastic latches. They are very heavy-duty, so at this point I don't think that will make a difference. The latches on his are metal. Love knowing this case has stood the test of time and travel between here and California for many years. It has plenty of room for extras, like my earplugs, and other litte things I want to keep with the rifle. It's my first rifle and case. Very excited to travel to Africa with it.

Very nice,well worth the money. Excellent protection for your firearms. Price was far better than at sporting goods stores. SKB is a better product than other hard cases I have seen, I now own two, a single and now this double.

I was so excited to receive the package, and justifiably so. The case is wonderful, clearly designed to take a beating. Only one flaw... the end handle popped off as soon as I tried to pick up the (EMPTY!!) case by it! The handle was attached by three rivets that appear to have been too short at install. A relatively easy fix, but one I would have expected from a cheaper (and less expensive) case... especially on first deployment of the handle! Otherwise...
LOVE the bunk bed design... I can fit an EBR and Operator with optics and bipods, and still have room for some tools and slings. I was VERY impressed with the interior; which complimented the mission-ready exterior. It looks like the alignment on the contact edges will be the first victim of any rough airline baggage handlers, but the case body should be able to take whatever they can dish out.
If only for that handle, it would be the perfect case...

I had this shipped to my destination, picked up my shotgun and a handgun, flew back. This case was sturdy and took the gorilla tossing the baggage handlers gave it and not one thing was messed up. I watched it tumble hard off the conveyor onto the baggage carousel. Not a problem. The weapons did not shift. This thing is tight on your guns. I like the bunk bed style. It gives my weapons their own space. The wheels make this a breeze to get through crowded airports. I'm female so I don't possess a lot of upper body strength and did not find this case hard to maneuver or carry up a flight of stairs. I handled it with a backpack and another wheeled bag with no strain. It looks like a musical instrument case (it must, I kept getting asked what I play). Only complaint I have with the case is the built in locks are a bit tough to work. There are two more spots to lock with external padlocks. The case stands up on its end when not on the move. I found it comfortable to lean on. Other than the stiff locks, this is an A1 product.

I just received this case from Amazon and had to post a preliminary review, since one of the existing reviews stated that this case wouldn't hold scoped rifles. I have an AICS stocked rifle with a Leupy Mark 4 scope with target turrets and it fit in this case along with a standard Rem 700 sized rifle with a Leupy Mark 2 scope. Not sure what kind of rifle/scope combo the other reviewer was using but there's no doubt that this case is plenty big for scoped rifles. It also feels very substantial. Until I fly with the case in a month or so, though, I'll have to reserve judgment on how it works.

Update 10/4/10

I just got back from a hunting trip and this case is amazing. I went from San Francisco to Casper, Wyoming and filled the case with the two rifles I mentioned above, about 100 rounds of ammo, a couple of knives and some various gun related stuff. Other than a few little scratches on the case you wouldn't have even known that the thing had been through the baggage handling process. The guns came through without any problems, no movement and no issues. It's a large case to wheel through an airport but I wouldn't even think of traveling with firearms in anything less than this case. On top of it being unscathed by the airlines, it also bounced around in the back of a truck for a few days and again, no damage and no movement of the rifles inside. This case is a bargain for the piece of mind and protection it affords.

It is a very nice double rifle case. I have been looking for one for a while, and just happened to see this one while looking to purchase something else. The price was the best I've found. It is large enough to hold 2 Remington Sendero Rifles.
