I will start by saying I don't do many projects that require a Jigsaw but the few I have done, this saw has been very satisfactory.

Pro: I really like the quick blade change feature and the fact that it can use T or U shank blades.

The Skill 4290-02 4.5 Amp saw is a replacement for a Craftsman Saw that I have no complaints with. The Skill is a plug in and the Craftsman is a Battery. The Skill Saw is one excellent choice. The price is reasonable and so far the quality and performance is second to none. It feels and handles exceptionally. The bit change is quick and effortless. The cuts are accurate and precise. I am extremely happy with my purchase.

I spent more than a decade as a cabinetmaker/finish carpenter and moonlighting as a handyman on the weekends, so I have used at least a dozen different models of jig saw. Last year I sold all my tools and went back to grad school, but I soon realized that a jig saw is one tool I just had to have around my apartment.

I knew I couldn't justify buying a pro-grade orbital model, so I decided to give this Skil a try.

Pro: I really like the quick blade change feature and the fact that it can use T or U shank blades. T shanks usually better quality and they don't bend or break as much, but U shanks are available in any discount store. With this tool, you have a choice. The little blade drawer is a nice touch too and the tool seems to have plenty of power. All around, it is the best under $50 jig saw I've used.

Con: It isn't orbital. Of course, an orbital jig saw is going to cost 2-5x as much, so you get what you pay for. But the simple fact is that a non-orbital saw will always cut slower, tear out worse, and not cut as square. I used to be able to cut dovetails with my Bosch 1590--no joke. That is never going to happen with this saw. Still, it works fine for most of your normal home improvement and crafts work. Especially if you use sharp blades and cut relatively thin materials. If you ever need a really clean, square cut you'll need to cut it oversize and drum sand it.

Analysis: If you're a professional or a serious woodworker, save up for a pro jig saw. If you just need to have a jig saw around the house for occasional use, this is a good bargain.

I used this saw on a project today that required a 15 degree cut and found that the foot only can be set at 90 degrees or 45 degrees. The tool description states that it easyly cuts Angles (plural) which I interpeted as any angle. Which I think was misleading. It is a nice saw. Changing the blade is easy

I am very happy with this Variable Speed Jig Saw, especially for the money. It has a strong motor, the variable controls work well, and it appears to be built quite well. I really like the container located in the bottom portion for storing blades, an issue I always seem to have. You must remember, though, this is a basic model. No laser light for guidance, only one blade supplied, and no case. But for less than $35, it is a great buy. Just don't expect anything but a basic jig saw. Would I buy again? In a heartbeat. Like I said, it is well made, it works, and the price is great.

I have used 2 jigsaws one from each end of the spectrum. At one end a Milwaukee 6266, at the other a B&D. I have gotten by with the B&D for a long time, but it is a most unpleasant experience in the process. The Milwaukee makes jigsawing fun again, but you get what you pay for. The 4290 leans closer to the Milwaukee end.

Here is what I like about the 4290. Out of the box it has a sturdy feel. All the parts seem robust. Cheaper saws feel jiggly. The foot, especially, is where jigsaws tend to skimp. The 4290 has a chunky base that feels like it stays put, square, and level over time. Another feature I like is the dial-in cutting speed. This feature, as on the Milwuakee, keeps a smooth steady pace as you go.

In terms of cutting capacity; 2x4 test - negative, the wood will cut your jigsaw first; 3/4" - accurate as Milwaukee but not as fast; laminate - piece of cake. Even with this entry level offering, the Skil brand impresses me with what they give you - features, quality, and cutting experience of a high end model, at a bargain price.

This is a great saw, the variable speed makes it easy to cut metal & wood of varying thicknesses, and to avoid resonance on flexible workpieces.

The overall feel of this jigsaw is solid and durable. Variable speed is nice and works fine. The motor feels very strong, and I expect to enjoy many years of use. I use mine for modifying computer cases, for which it's perfect. I'm sure to find hundreds more uses too. A must for any reasonable power tool collection. Skil on the whole makes solid, reliable basic budget power tools. This jigsaw is no exception.

Used to borrow a friend's B & D jigsaw. The Skil was less than $35 (w/ free shipping) from Amazon and the purchase was made. Comes with one wood saw (bought a 16 pack from Home Depot for less than $10). The variable speed feature makes working with different materials swift and safe. Find it sturdier than B&D entry level model. Saw replacement is fast, simple and safe. Perfect for any home project. Gone are the borrowing days!!!!!
