I knew I couldn't justify buying a pro-grade orbital model, so I decided to give this Skil a try.
Pro: I really like the quick blade change feature and the fact that it can use T or U shank blades. T shanks usually better quality and they don't bend or break as much, but U shanks are available in any discount store. With this tool, you have a choice. The little blade drawer is a nice touch too and the tool seems to have plenty of power. All around, it is the best under $50 jig saw I've used.
Con: It isn't orbital. Of course, an orbital jig saw is going to cost 2-5x as much, so you get what you pay for. But the simple fact is that a non-orbital saw will always cut slower, tear out worse, and not cut as square. I used to be able to cut dovetails with my Bosch 1590--no joke. That is never going to happen with this saw. Still, it works fine for most of your normal home improvement and crafts work. Especially if you use sharp blades and cut relatively thin materials. If you ever need a really clean, square cut you'll need to cut it oversize and drum sand it.
Analysis: If you're a professional or a serious woodworker, save up for a pro jig saw. If you just need to have a jig saw around the house for occasional use, this is a good bargain.
Here is what I like about the 4290. Out of the box it has a sturdy feel. All the parts seem robust. Cheaper saws feel jiggly. The foot, especially, is where jigsaws tend to skimp. The 4290 has a chunky base that feels like it stays put, square, and level over time. Another feature I like is the dial-in cutting speed. This feature, as on the Milwuakee, keeps a smooth steady pace as you go.
In terms of cutting capacity; 2x4 test - negative, the wood will cut your jigsaw first; 3/4" - accurate as Milwaukee but not as fast; laminate - piece of cake. Even with this entry level offering, the Skil brand impresses me with what they give you - features, quality, and cutting experience of a high end model, at a bargain price.
It's a little confusing on whether the blade is IN properly (I was expecting a satisfying click or something) but once I trusted that it was alright... it's alright. I wear protective glasses anyway, as is completely obvious working with wood and splinters, metal shrapnel etc.
Can't find anything wrong with it, I'm hoping it lasts awhile but it seems it will.

Great saw for the occasional user. I did not want to spend a lot on a saw that I use rarely. The price is low, quality is good.Published 6 months ago by Kerry Couey
