Idea is good, but there's a fundamental flaw with this device..., March 28, 2011
This review is from: SKLZ Rick Smith Perfect Plane - Swing Plane Training Board (Sports)
This product tries to instill an inside-to-square-to-inside putting stroke (as opposed to straight back straight through), so make sure it fits your method. However, I used this device at my instructor's teaching facility, and after messing around with it and really thinking about how it works, there's as fundamental flaw with it.
The flaw is that not everybody's putting plane is the same. Some are flatter, some are more upright. The angle depends on the lie angle of your putter and your posture. Obviously this device is not adjustable, so it may not fit your body angles.
The idea is good, but because of this fundamental flaw, I wouldn't recommend it. A better training aid that you can build yourself for about 10 bucks is to get some 1/2" PVC with some fittings, and make a horizontal bar about a foot off the ground, which is supported by some PVC "legs". I can't go into details here of the design, but the idea is that the horizontal bar goes down your target line, and your putter's shaft rides on top of the bar. The result is EXACTLY what this device is trying to do, BUT, it's a "self-adjusting" plane board. It will work no matter your setup or putter lie angle. I also find it easier to putt without your putter head scraping against some board, as the putter shaft rides smoothly on the bar without affecting the face angle at all.
