Brief summary of the Arista years, and misses the mark completely,
By Johnny Boy "The Record Collector" (Hockessin, DE) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Super Hits (Audio CD)
I'll make this a quick review.
Here's another worthless budget entry in the useless 'Super Hits' series. Only Keith Whitley and Alice Cooper have entries in this sub-par series that are even worth mentioning, although I quite like Dion DiMucci's (although this all another review entirely). You get tracks from Aretha spanning 1980 ('United Together' is included instead of the 'The Moment,' contrary to what Amazon has listed) to 1991, and during those years, she evolved greatly as an artist. The Memphis soul days were long gone, instead replaced by trendy R&B that was hip at the time (and has aged surprisingly well compared to other artist's work from the era). Aretha had some great stuff on Arista that a lot of people neglect. I suppose that's the only positive of the album: people will see this at a store, they will notice that is cheap, and buy it instantly. I admit it. I did. It boasts great sound quality, but it lacks so much (I guess I wanted to hear 'United Together' remastered, why I don't know). 10 songs? Really? Come on! For the Queen of Soul??? You are gonna have to do better than that. Why not include 'Every Girl Wants My Guy,' or expand and include tracks from 1998's 'A Rose is Still a Rose' or 2003's 'So Damn Happy'? The 'Super Hits' releases always have only 10 songs, and I don't get it. A compact disc holds 80 minutes worth of music. And the greedy folks at Sony BMG refused to put in the extra time that could potentially make this a very good overview of her Arista years. Stick to 'Greatest Hits 1980-1994' over this one if you want a summary of her comeback and latter-day stuff. This collection is disposable, and unless you are an avid audiophile or you see it in the bargain bin (and I'll bet anything you will -- I bought my copy for a $1.98 at my local Border's), just stay away from it. There are so many better collections on the market this one, despite being released in 2009, was obsolete on the day it was released. Look elsewhere.
