5.0 out of 5 stars Good Item, March 31, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Simran SM-1000J Step Up and Down Japanese Transformer 1000W; Can be used only in 100 and 120 volt countries; Will convert from 120 volt to 100 volt AND from 100 volt to 120 volt.; Fuse protected; Heavy duty continuous use; Power ON/OFF Switch (Lawn & Patio)
I use it for my Japanese home bakery machine, almost everyday.

The bakery machine only requires 350W, but I bought 1000W transformer, so it has enough power for the machine sometimes runs over 8hrs, depending on what kind of bread you make.

The transformer is very easy to use, infact, the instruction is just a couple of sentences long. I have been using it for a month now, everyday, no problem. No heat is created, too.
Good thing is that I can always take this back to Japan to be used with American appliances.

It was a bit difficult to plug in the appliance at first. I don't know if it's just me, but I really had to push it in.

Good Item, very reliable, highly recommend!

5.0 out of 5 stars Must-have for Japanese & other 100VAC Electronics, November 10, 2009
If you have electronics which require 100VAC input, this is a must have. Don't listen to your friends who tell you the 120VAC outlet works just fine. It's not true. I had other Japanese domestic electronics which used on the 120VAC outlet. Yes, they worked for some time (like a year) and then died. I know it should have lasted for longer than a year if I used it at 100VAC source. 20% Overvoltage and constantly stressing your equipment is NOT a smart idea, especially if you are running expensive gadgets.

Anyway, I got one of these from this seller is because either the local stores mark up the price (I got quoted $85 + tax!) or the online stores charge high S&H (the 1kW step-down transformer weights about 20lbs!). So I found this seller. They sell at a discount already. PLUS, the S&H is only $7. The sub-total is much lower than what the next cheapest seller would charge. Packing is good. It's basically 100% the same packaging from manufacturer.

This unit is Made In China, but rest assure that you'll get quality product. The manufacturer is a good one, and the transformer is tested to be reliable AND stable.

Recommended!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Works as expected, October 30, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Simran SM-1000J Step Up and Down Japanese Transformer 1000W; Can be used only in 100 and 120 volt countries; Will convert from 120 volt to 100 volt AND from 100 volt to 120 volt.; Fuse protected; Heavy duty continuous use; Power ON/OFF Switch (Lawn & Patio)
Pretty good! Works as advertised. The 100V plug seems a little odd but *does* fit our rice cooker; it took a bit of pushing though at first. It's getting easier now.

Reasons for 4 instead of 5 stars:

- The 100V plug *is* somewhat odd (although it does work)
- Instructions for switching the fuse were not included with the unit. There was no paper in the box, nor was it printed on the box as support suggested. However, support did explain by e-mail about how to do this.

Please be aware that the voltage "switch" is just for the input voltage. Do not plug your Japanese appliances into the 117V plug; only the plug on the right is intended for this and the voltages are different.

5.0 out of 5 stars get one if you have any heavy power electronics from japan!, January 8, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Simran SM-1000J Step Up and Down Japanese Transformer 1000W; Can be used only in 100 and 120 volt countries; Will convert from 120 volt to 100 volt AND from 100 volt to 120 volt.; Fuse protected; Heavy duty continuous use; Power ON/OFF Switch (Lawn & Patio)
i moved to the states and realized my rice cooker from japan is somewhat malfunctioned after the first time use. at first i thought it's probably damaged by the shipping, because it kept showing "H04" error when i tried to cook("H04" from zojirushi rice cooker means the pot isn't in the rice cooker.) it's just driving me crazy not knowing what happened to my decent rice cooker! but then i called zojirushi's hotline in the states, realizing the problem might be the voltage problem as it's 120V in the states, but mine is set for 100V. the customer service representative was very nice to let me know this fact, and reminded me to get a voltage transformer should solve this issue. even though i've cooked with 120V for 3 times already(which the customer service guy also mentioned there might be a damage to my rice cooker.), still, it's worth spending $70 to get the voltage transformer than spending almost $300 to get the same one that works for 120V! luckily my rice cooker is now working fine with the voltage transformer! for people who are facing the "H04" problem with zojirushi rice cooker from japan, don't throw away your rice cooker or send back for a check! the rice cooker is fine, and the "H04" is just telling you stop using 120V or your rice cooker might be damaged by the high voltage!

oh, there's just one issue about this voltage step-down transformer, it's big and heavy! and kinda ugly when it's in your kitchen...

We use this in our house to power a Japanese kotatsu heater -- and it works wonderfully! We haven't had any issues with the heater getting too hot, and we haven't yet tripped a fuse (we use this almost daily). It's simple to work and comes with an instruction sheet (telling how to operate and how to change the fuse), and with spare fuses.
