The benchmark of PC strategy manuals,
By Dark Angel (Spain) - See all my reviews
This review is from: SMAX Guide (Paperback)
This is probably the best strategy guide ever written for a game, period.
The game being SMAC which is widely regarded, even today, as the pinnacle of turn-based strategy gaming. If you're into PC strategy games, you owe it to yourself to buy and learn from this book. Unlike other "strategy" guides which in truth are nothing short of glorified game manuals, this book is written by an elite player. He does not waste your time in explaining what you'll find in Primas' Official Strategy Guide taking it all for granted. It sets out intelligent and adaptative strategies to the likes of the different available playing-styles (warmonger, builder, hybrids). It will completely change and rework your vision of the SMAC/X universe adding layers upon layers of deep strategical thinking. In short, it will open your eyes to a higher level of gameplay you did not think possible. It provides a rare glimpse into the mind and decision-making processes of a skilled player. A book like this can only be written by someone whose truly mastered the game's fine nuances distilling them and conveying them in a clear and concise manner. Not least is the inclusion of the Community's input (namely key Apolyton players). The authors' economic academical background is self-evident througout the book i.e. his unwavering obsession with creating turn-play advantages. Many of the lessons taught can in fact crossover to other strategy games such as the Civilization series. It will take your gameplay to the next level. This book is the benchmark by which other PC strategy manuals ought to be be judged. Drakan |
