Disappointing, November 12, 2007
This review is from: SMK-Link VP4910 RemotePoint Jade Presentation Remote (Electronics)
I received this remote control tonight with very high hopes, especially because of the very high price tag. Still, I am a professional trainer and I can justify the expense if the product is worth it.
So far, without even using it for more than a few minutes, I have these disappointments with this device:
1) The programmable dongle cannot be set to press the "Enter" key or the "Control" key. While there are a ton of keys it can press, Enter is not one of them. And while I can press the Control key in combination with many other keys, it appears that Control alone does not work. This feature is the main reason I purchased this remote control. You may find that your needs for a programmable control are also not met.
2) The wireless dongle does not store in the remote. Other products 1/3rd the price of yours allow the presenter to place the dongle inside the remote when not in use. I am worried that the dongle will be easily lost or damaged if allowed to float around my notebook bag.
3) There is no on/off switch to prevent "accidental clicks" while not in use. Again, other devices 1/3rd the price have a simple on/off switch. I am worried that I will begin a meeting and find the batteries have drained because the laser pointer was on all night long.
4) Their website which claims to offer online support via email and chat had broken links when I visited it tonight. And their FAQs don't even mention the Jade product.
On the plus side:
1) Green pointer is WAY bright.
2) The device, while larger than most presenter remotes, does feel good in the hand. The AA batteries make it slightly heavy, though.
3) The 360 mouse works quite nicely, possibly the best I've used. This is the remote's strongest point.
I have emailed them to ask about programmable issue, and if they respond favorably I will update this review. But I have a feeling I will be returning it shortly.
[Update] They never responded to my email, but I did call them. Their support was quick to answer and friendly, but they still could not solve the problem I identified above (#1). They agreed it was a bug, but it has been two weeks and no fix yet.
I've used the pointer in many sessions now, and it is just as good as the $60 device I was using before, but no better. The lack of flexible programming (see #1) means I won't be using this any more, sadly. I really hope they make a sequel to this device and take my feedback into account. It could be perfect.

Finally, a decent presentation remote., January 5, 2008
This review is from: SMK-Link VP4910 RemotePoint Jade Presentation Remote (Electronics)
I've owned four different presentation remotes. This is my favorite.
It's got bright green laser pointer, solid radio reception, a full 360-degree mouse, and programmable buttons that, once programmed, work on any computer without special drivers. It also runs on standard AA batteries, so the batteries should last forever (and are ubiquitous anyway).
It doesn't get five stars for a few reasons. The price is a bit high. The remote itself is a bit large (though comfortable), and lacks any dock for the USB receiver. This is especially annoying consider that it does not come with a case either. I plan on adding a little bit of velcro to keep the receiver and remote together, and keeping them in a glasses bag with a draw string (and always an extra set of batteries).

Oustanding performance; a bit large in the hand., April 27, 2008
This review is from: SMK-Link VP4910 RemotePoint Jade Presentation Remote (Electronics)
This is the most reliable, most functional remote I've used.
I've owned two other presentation remotes from Interlink, one from Logitech, and one from Kensington, and have used countless others. The one thing a presenter needs to *know* is that the slide will advance when he clicks the button. No matter where you are in the room, how far away you get, or what stands between you and the USB receiver, this remote just works. What a delightful relief.
Other Interlink remotes I've owned (particularly the Interlink RemotePoint 4300 series) have proven nearly as reliable. But this Jade remote never failed to respond -- not one time. I've become a proponent of Interlink equipment because their remotes have consistently outperformed those of other brands, in my experience.
Discussion of features:
The unit is called the "Jade" because it comes equipped with a green laser. I rarely use a laser, but in those rare instances in which I do, the green laser is significantly easier for audience members to spot than are most red lasers.
The eraser-head mouse controller is too slippery for easy use, and is too stiff (requiring too much pressure to move the mouse). Interlink has the right idea, but needs softer, stickier rubber, and should make the pointing stick easier to manipulate. This feature is not useless -- I was able to use it to navigate around a screen and click on objects -- but for much more than a quick mouse-over, you'll probably want to go back to the laptop itself.
The 4-way button around the mouse activates the laser (up), advances slides (left and right), and now offers a right-click (down) option, which is handy.
The four programmable buttons are a nice addition. They are firm enough that you will not accidentally activate them, and they provide clear tactile feedback. By default, the top one blanks the screen (and this feature works every time, unlike on other remotes, on which this feature seems to work when it's in the mood). I believe two others adjust volume by default. Programming is easy, and that programmability goes directly into the receiver. This means you don't have to install any software on other computers; you just pop the receiver into the USB port and off you go, with your custom functions.
The unit is completely coated in the pleasing matte-black rubberish compound featured on many such devices over the past few years. It stays clean and doesn't seem to wear. Fit and finish are excellent -- the unit is hefty and feels of very high quality; buttons are solid and the battery cover feels tight.
I do wish the remote was smaller. I'm a small guy, anyway, but this is the biggest remote I've used in a long time. If you really count on concealing your clicker, you may be happier with one of the smaller Interlink units.
But I'm just so amazed by Jade's reliability that I wouldn't even consider switching even for a smaller unit. I've found the remote I'll use for at least the next couple of years.
