"Smokey Places" studio quality stereo, amazing! Rest of album, not, June 12, 2010
This review is from: SMOKEY PLACES--16 ORIGINAL HITS (Audio CD)
I give this five stars for the people who want a great copy of a single song. If you like the one hit this group had ("Smokey Places"), you'll be blown away by the best-sounding, true stereo version of the original song ever, on this CD. Coming from what seem to be original three-track masters, this Drifters-soundalike gem would have done Atlantic/Atco (home of the Drifters) proud if they had released it. If you're a collector or fanatic, this is what you've only dreamed of.
If you're not, and if you're hoping that the rest of the CD is in the same stellar sound, it's not. Fact is, the rest of the album seems to have come from the same tired sources used for "Smokey Places" on many previous releases and the songs don't stand out from those of the average vocal group of the day. (If you like this type of music but don't want to spring for just one song, consider the excellent (and very reasonably priced for five essential albums) Original Album Series: Clyde McPhatter and the Drifters, available from Amazon as of this writing, or maybe a hits collection for a smaller appetite).
If money is tight and you can let this rare release go, do. But, if you want to have this super-sounding true-stereo hit song in your hands yesterday, buy one or several copies now before it's too late.

Corsairs - Smokey Places, October 2, 2010
This review is from: SMOKEY PLACES--16 ORIGINAL HITS (Audio CD)
If you enjoyed hearing "Smokey Places" when it was a hit, and still enjoy hearing it 45+ years later, this is for you. "Smokey Places" is the lead track, and is in a category by itself. Two of the remaining tracks are novelty songs, and are in the top third of the novelty song field. The remaining tracks (especially "Dancing Shadows" and "On the Spanish Side") are fine examples of doo wop struggling to become soul. My wife and I listening to the whole CD several times on a recent 4 day road trip, and found that it grew on us, becoming more enjoyable each time around.
