Customer Reviews

Very good sound comes through and stays nicely contained within.
Brian J. Greene
You also get an instruction book, cleaning cloth, stickers, a certificate of authenticity (on nice cardstock), and a small poster -- in my case of Luke Skywalker.
William A. Nolan
The headphones are quite good, but not good enough to warrant that kind of money, in my opinion.

As a DJ and avid gamer I'm always in the market for new and decent quality headphones. I've owned and used many headsets over the years (this is my first pair of SMS Audio STREET by 50) and there always seems to be something new for PC, gaming consoles, mobile devices and DJing. As I always enjoy testing out new headphones here are my thoughts on the SMS Audio STREET by 50 First Edition Star Wars On Ear Headphones Galactic Empire;

Pros

+ Compact with ear cups that fold inwards and fit nicely into a neat little carrying case. Excellent for travelling!

+ Well balanced sound quality. Not too tinny with the treble and not overwhelming with the bass.

+ Decent passive noise isolation. Ear cups sit around your ears, not on them. This forms a seal which is great at blocking noise and good if you're not a fan of current in-ear noise isolation headphones.

+ Nice packaging with some nifty extras like stickers, poster, cleaning cloth etc.

+ Audio cable controls are easy to use and manipulate.

+ Officially licensed Star Wars product.

+ Sleek look and design that's simply plug and play.

+ Lightweight.

Cons

- Uncomfortable to wear for extended periods of time. I have a smaller than average head and wear glasses but after 30 minutes the ear cups I was really starting to feel the pressure.

- For the high price point the sound quality is mediocre. Not completely disappointing, but you definitely won't be wowed either.

- Steep list price of $199 which I feel is too much for what you're getting.

- Build quality consists mainly of plastic and synthetic which is a bit disappointing considering the price tag.

- No Bluetooth or wireless capability.

So here's the deal: I've reviewed more than a few sets of headphones and earbuds. I was a recording engineer and record producer for a while and I'm pretty picky about sound, so I tend to check out new sets looking for a nice surprise sound quality-wise. Sadly, these did not deliver.

Construction wise they're pretty alright. Seem well-made, fold up small, fit in the football-shaped case that's included. The cord is removable (good), but can only be plugged into the left ear (less good). The Star Wars branding is really nicely done, and the swag is ok I suppose, but none of that means a thing if you can't get good use out of the headphones, and there are two reasons that just wasn't happening for me.

First, they just aren't very comfortable. The band over the top is thinly padded and the cups are on the small size, making the grippiness intrude on the listening experience.

Second, the sound is just nowhere near where it should be for a set of headphones like this. The upper mids are strong, but bass and lower mids are muddy and lack definition. The high end is attenuated, making it sound like a cloth has been tossed between the cups and my ears when I compare it to other sets I have on hand (Sennheiser HD580s and Pioneer SE-MX9s which I'll be reviewing when I'm finished with this piece). The one nice thing I can say is they are extremely efficient, making it no problem to use a portable music device to drive them sufficiently.

In the end though, as much as I'd like to love them, it looks like all the care went into making a package they could sell to Star Wars fans rather than important things like long-term comfort and sound quality.

Style Name: Rebel Alliance Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
This is a nice outfit for audiophiles who are also Star Wars fans. It includes a set of wired headphones, a hardshell case, and some collectible items. The headphones are lightweight and are comfortable with cushioned ear pads and more cushioning where the headphones sit on top of your head. The ear pads swivel a few degrees to fit solidly against your ears. The headbands will extend up to one inch, so the headphones should fit most people. When not in use, the ear pads fold up to make the headphones compact enough to fit in the zippered hardshell case. The set includes a 5½"x5" cleaning cloth.

To my ears, the headphones have very good sound, with vocals having excellent clarity, and a pronounced but not overwhelming bass. I checked the stereo balance and channel separation with some MP3 stereo setup utilities, and they were spot on.

The collectibles include a Star Wars poster (Luke Skywalker in the Rebel Alliance set), a small sheet of Star wars/SMS Audio stickers, and a certificate of authenticity.

About the headphones: They're pretty cool-looking with the Star Wars tie-in, and the audio quality is better than I expected. The microphone button for advancing to the next track or returning to the previous track did not work with my Kindle Fire. It did work with my Android phone, but only to advance the track. The headphones fold into a very compact size, with a very nice carrying case.

About the collectibles: Aside from the poster (which is folded, not rolled up), there's not much. But the poster has a nice image of Luke in battle gear.

Overall: I seldom comment on price, since prices often change, but at the time of this review, the headphone set is two hundred dollars.
