Very good sound comes through and stays nicely contained within.

I'm not sure if I need to break them in longer, but I've been using them steadily for a month and so far I haven't noticed a difference.

As a DJ and avid gamer I'm always in the market for new and decent quality headphones. I've owned and used many headsets over the years (this is my first pair of SMS Audio STREET by 50) and there always seems to be something new for PC, gaming consoles, mobile devices and DJing. As I always enjoy testing out new headphones here are my thoughts on the SMS Audio STREET by 50 First Edition Star Wars On Ear Headphones Galactic Empire;

Pros

+ Compact with ear cups that fold inwards and fit nicely into a neat little carrying case. Excellent for travelling!

+ Well balanced sound quality. Not too tinny with the treble and not overwhelming with the bass.

+ Decent passive noise isolation. Ear cups sit around your ears, not on them. This forms a seal which is great at blocking noise and good if you're not a fan of current in-ear noise isolation headphones.

+ Nice packaging with some nifty extras like stickers, poster, cleaning cloth etc.

+ Audio cable controls are easy to use and manipulate.

+ Officially licensed Star Wars product.

+ Sleek look and design that's simply plug and play.

+ Lightweight.

Cons

- Uncomfortable to wear for extended periods of time. I have a smaller than average head and wear glasses but after 30 minutes the ear cups I was really starting to feel the pressure.

- For the high price point the sound quality is mediocre. Not completely disappointing, but you definitely won't be wowed either.

- Steep list price of $199 which I feel is too much for what you're getting.

- Build quality consists mainly of plastic and synthetic which is a bit disappointing considering the price tag.

- No Bluetooth or wireless capability.

So here's the deal: I've reviewed more than a few sets of headphones and earbuds. I was a recording engineer and record producer for a while and I'm pretty picky about sound, so I tend to check out new sets looking for a nice surprise sound quality-wise. Sadly, these did not deliver.

Construction wise they're pretty alright. Seem well-made, fold up small, fit in the football-shaped case that's included. The cord is removable (good), but can only be plugged into the left ear (less good). The Star Wars branding is really nicely done, and the swag is ok I suppose, but none of that means a thing if you can't get good use out of the headphones, and there are two reasons that just wasn't happening for me.

First, they just aren't very comfortable. The band over the top is thinly padded and the cups are on the small size, making the grippiness intrude on the listening experience.

Second, the sound is just nowhere near where it should be for a set of headphones like this. The upper mids are strong, but bass and lower mids are muddy and lack definition. The high end is attenuated, making it sound like a cloth has been tossed between the cups and my ears when I compare it to other sets I have on hand (Sennheiser HD580s and Pioneer SE-MX9s which I'll be reviewing when I'm finished with this piece). The one nice thing I can say is they are extremely efficient, making it no problem to use a portable music device to drive them sufficiently.

In the end though, as much as I'd like to love them, it looks like all the care went into making a package they could sell to Star Wars fans rather than important things like long-term comfort and sound quality.

I'm a burgeoning audiophile and I'm always eager to try new cans to add to my listening experience. A while back, say 2007 or so, I jumped into the deeper waters and decided to upgrade my stock Apple ear buds (why I didn't sooner is beyond me). I haven't looked back since, and continue to look forward this very day.

But do these headphones do my ears and music justice?

Right now my arsenal consists of some Sound Blasters I use for my computer and my trusty ol' Sennheisers which I've had since 2007 (the selfsame headphones with which I used to help me jump from Apple), along with Monoprice ear buds I keep at work. I'm not the most professional audiophile, but I sure as heck can tell some differences in quality, especially if the sound source is in FLAC.
Unfortunately, I'm not the most ecstatic about SMS Audio's STREET by 50, especially at the higher premium for Star Wars branding.

I've always been wary of celebrity-endorsed products; never trying Beats, I've been bombarded by them on the streets of Chicago by the candy-colored headbands on people's heads. I've always wondered about their integrity, until a fellow flesh-and-blood audiophile renounced them after she had used her ATH -M50s for some time. I took her word for it and never considered using Beats.
But me, being the Star Wars fanatic, had to try the SMS Audio. When they arrived I admit I was impressed by the fancy packaging. For $200, the headphones arrived looking like it.
They came in a slipcased box that was a little difficult to remove as the vacuum-sealed enclosure proved a tough fit, but they open up sweetly after that.

There are some nice manuals that come with, along with some neat little Star Wars stickers and papers.
