This is a surprisingly good little headphone amp.

Now this makes me wonder how much better will those really expensive tube amps sound like.

To top it off, it's construction appears to be very solid as well.

Ok. The SMSL sAp II headphone amplifier. If you are looking for an inexpensive amp with audiophile quality sound… this your amp. The sound reproduction on this little thing is phenomenal! When you listen to music you have listened to forever, and plug this thing in and listen… and find yourself being moved as if you have never heard the music before, then you know the sound quality is good. The highs are crisp, yet very smooth with a nice high end range. The bass actually comes out nice. Punchy where it is supposed to be and mellow also in the right places. The mids are excellent…very well balanced. As far as noise or distortion, I can’t really hear anything. (In my searchings before buying this I wanted to know the THD. I came across a spot on line that claims the unit has 0.001% though it didn’t tell me the wattage used for the testing.. So, I can’t confirm it. IF I can hear in classical pieces moving and shuffle and clicks of the keys of woodwind instruments, very distinctly, then that is great. The sound is not fatiguing at all. When I first plugged it in, I found myself listening for a good couple hours… Things of other note. On one review the poster claimed that the L & R channels were reversed. My unit is not. Also, there is a glowing ring around the volume control so when you turn the unit on, you will know that it has power. The only drawback is not the unit itself but the fact that it is imported from China. SMSL is a Chinese company, so it imports directly from China. So, it takes a quite a while to get in. Luckily for me, it shipped in a couple of days air mail and I received in 10 days. Hopefully you will have the same luck I did. Overall… for $60 the amp sound like it should be in $200-300 range. So, if you are audiophile on a budget… you can’t go wrong with it…

This is a very good sounding basic amp. It is on par or better than the Fiio E9. On very efficient headphones you may get a little noise when you move the volume pot same as on the E9. This amp easily drives my AKG 702 headphones, somewhat of an accomplishment. Yes this is on of those cheap Chinese amps, just like your expensive Chinese made laptop and other electronics. Who cares where it's made so long as it sounds good. I like it much better than my D1 for headphone use. Pair it with a good DAC (D1 in my case)and give it a listen.

This is a high quality, low distortion solid state headphone amp. The main processor is a Texas Instruments chip designed for musicality. It's a piece of cake to connect this amp to your receiver/amp. Connect the power and use either the video or tape outputs as inputs to the headphone amp, plug in your phones and you're good to go. The sound is way better than I expected-a very pleasant surprise. It's comparable to the headphone output produced by my Integra receiver. Doesn't sound digital at all. Has a nice mellow temperament with gobs of power if you're wont to destroy your ears! Intended to use it just to watch TV/movies as I like the idea of having a separate volume control. Now using it for music also. Jazz, classical and classic rock on vinyl sounds especially good. This is a surprisingly good little headphone amp. No instructions supplied but none needed. Treat your ears!

Some things in life one has to see to believe. Well, one has to hear to believe just how good this little inexpensive headphone amp sounds. I was surprised at the power this little amp has. It's driving my Grado model SR-80's with ease. The sound quality is very uncolored and dynamic. To top it off, it's construction appears to be very solid as well. I feel like I got my 60 bucks worth, and then some. If you buy this headphone amp, you may find they're worth investing in some quality headphones as well, if you don't already own a pair.

So far I like it very much. It made a huge difference with my Audio Technica ATH-ad900x which for a while I thought they were bad..lol! This amp murders my previous Behringer HA-400 four way headphone splitter amp. Now this makes me wonder how much better will those really expensive tube amps sound like. I just hope it doesn't go kaput on me in a 1 month or so...lol.

Also the build quality seems pretty good. I'm tempted to crack this baby open and see the quality of the innards but that will void the warranty if I do. I will eventually do it down the road.

update:

to tell you the truth, I had my reservations about this amp at the beginning but I tell you it's an excellent product and it sounds amazing. I don't even recognize my ath-ad900x anymore.....it made that much of a difference for the good. As long as it lasts, it's best for the money.
