3.0 out of 5 stars Halfway decent game, but this is NOT SOCOM! June 2, 2011
Edition:Standard|Amazon Verified Purchase
Fun: 2.0 out of 5 stars
Well, what can I say? SOCOM this is NOT!!!!

OK, for the record, I miss the old SOCOM format...REALLY, I do! And for Zipper Interactive to release this game, the way it is, is just wrong!

And before you guys start bashing me, play it first, and then take a moment, step back, and ask yourself, "is this really SOCOM???"

I mean, why even make this game? There's a thousand run-n-gun type military games out there...Too many to list, actually. The original Socom format really had something different. There were NO GAMES like them! So, what does THIS GAME bring to the table, that the other shooters do not????? NOTHING!

I don't know where to start, and I'm just gonna be all over the place, as things make me angry....but, here goes:

This game is basically run, get shot at, run, get shot at, get shot at some more, and get shot at some more. If you think I'm kidding, try the game yourself!

The original SOCOM series was intense, strategic, organic, you could use a headset to use voice commands, use your teammates to help complete missions, use team mates to overwatch, command teammates to do all sorts of stuff...the original SOCOM games had SO MUCH to offer...this game????....NOTHING!!! All this cool stuff that the original SOCOM games had, is all GONE! Sure, OK, the graphics are awesome! OK? And sure, it's got a BUNCH of shooting in it...OK? but, so do a million other games out there, and graphics & shooting only goes so far. If you're looking for the old SOCOM here....well, you can forget it. The original magic of SOCOM, is forever gone.

In this game, you can forget about shooting bad guys at 300yds, and staying hidden for a while. OH NO, NOT IN THIS GAME!!!

Fun: 3.0 out of 5 stars
UPDATE 05-02-11: Giving the title a fourth star for two reasons: First, the U.S. Navy SEALS just killed Osama Bin Laden! That's the ultimate 'Takedown' mission...Go SEALS!! Secondly, I've been logging a lot more time with the game in 'Custom' mode. The no-respawn rule in 'Custom' forces a frustrating, but ultimately highly instructive and tactical rethink of gameplay style that fits with the game design. It's sort of like learning an instrument, frustrating until you 'get it', then it's much more rewarding. The price coming down also helps...a lot.

UPDATE 06-02-11: See 'Multiplayer' notes below Singleplayer -PSN is finally running for me.

*****

Let me start out by saying that I'm almost exclusively a First Person Shooter player and almost always on an Xbox. I've logged time on (and have beaten as well) BFBC2, CoD Black Ops, and Crysis 2; I also own and have beaten CoD Modern Warfare, MW2, Red Dead Redemption, etc...

I've just gotten into the PS3 scene to get the killer Blu-Ray player and try some of the exclusive titles on it. The SOCOM series is a PS exclusive. SOCOM4 is my first taste of a shooter on the PS3 and sadly, this game doesn't measure up, and that's too bad. Granted, it's a Third Person Shooter game on the PS3, but more than close enough to compare. Gears of War and RDR are both TPS and awesome.

Having carried a real gun for the 32 years of my entire adult life from 17 to 49 in the military and law enforcement, I wanted to experience something close to actually pointing a weapon in a video game and was excited to try the PS SharpShooter system based on its reviews.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Gotta Be Honest, In A Good Way!!! June 9, 2011

Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
i usually play with a friend online in 1st person shooters. we usually stick to black ops or Battlefield Bad Company 1& 2... ive played SOCOM before but probably like 5 years ago and never on a ps3... SOCOM 4 is very different than Black Ops & Bad Company. everybody is sayin that SOCOM 4 was tryin to be like Call Of Duty, i dont think thats the case.. nowadays games like Super Mario, Grand Theft Auto 3, the 1st MK are technically thought of as (Bad Games).. back then they were amazing ground breaking games. the creators of SOCOM 4 knew that so clearly there not going to go backwards. they had to add some features, better graphics, and basically update. i guess SOCOM fans dont like seeing that but its gotta happen sometime. i personally thought this game was very very good. the 3rd person is a nice change up, sometimes it gets a little hard to shoot when on the side of cover but not too hard. the story mode was a little cliche but stil pretty fun, theres a pretty good selection of guns and custimation for them.. i like the co-op and multi very much.. somehow in SOCOM 4 theres NO CAMPING.. there might be a guy in the same spot tryin to camp but if you know where he is its very easy to eliminate him and stop the camping... i love the bullet penetration, the way bullets go through bodys are just beautiful. the maps seem to be huge but it also seems like everybody is really spread out and no1s in groups. theres no real rendervous point, or middle of the map where people meet. and the knifing is amazing!!!!! THE KNIFING IS JUST LIKE BATTLEFIELD BAD COMPANY 1 KNIFING!!!! :), a swish kinda, not a shank or stab, makes for way better knife fights and its not based on luck or connection like call of duty... in closing i give this game a 9 outa 10..... Why I think socom 4 will be somewhat successful
No offense but this seems a little Zipper fanboyish in nature rather then someone speaking as a Socom fan. One of the big things you left out for how it could fail is the fact that a huge majority of the Socom fanbase is very upset all over the web because there's only like three classic features... Read more

Weigh in on your Socom 4 impressions
I see the series taking a turn to the call of duty style of game play. I wish that they would just stick to the original style of socom. Confrontation was a joke because of all the changes and it damn near killed the series for me.
