You best be tactical, I mean really tactical on how you get around. You got to know when to move and when to sit on a tactical location...and be careful...someone can always be waiting around the corner. If your a true hunter of large game in the forest, you'll love this game; but if your a run and gun type, skip this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Online game, February 7, 2009
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: SOCOM: US Navy Seals Confrontation Stand Alone (Video Game)
I just purchased this game a few days ago even though I heard it still had a lot of issues. It will take up quite a bit of space on your hard drive, roughly 3 gbs, luckly I have a 250gb hdd. First off I didn't notice any lag at all, and I couldn't find any issues with this game at all. If you're a fan of great graphics, than this game is not for you, but the gameplay is superb. You do have to have some sort of strategy before you get the mission started. If you decide to run and gun you will probably get shot and killed, there is no respawning either, so you have to make sure you stay alive. Usually what my team does, we usually stick in packs of 2 or 3 just in case we need backup. Also I really like the fact that almost every socom player has a headset, and people actually do use it while playing socom. The headset comes in really handy especially if you decide to travel in packs. I would recommend this game to anyone who enjoys realistic shooters. Feel free to add me to you're PSN friends list if you wanna play socom PSN ID: solid_snake3656

I 1st got this game after loving the old socom games for ps2. I was horribly dissapointed on how bad the gameplay and graphics were. i think ps2's graphics looked better.

A year later and about 10 patches, i started playing it again...and...

wow this is a totaly new game. I love it, i stopped playing cod now and started playing this again. cod has too many little stupid kids

4.0 out of 5 stars Its FINALLY Playable!, January 24, 2009

I have held off reviewing this version of SOCOM because it was released before it should have been. Those of us that were playing the pre-release beta could not believe that Slant 6/Sony were going to release this buggy, laggy game that you could not stay connected to.

However, most problems with the game have now been fixed. The problems that remain are due to game play issues that are quirky, like not being able to throw a grenade around a corner or shoot over a railing you are standing against. Many of these issues are seen in a series of hilarious videos on Youtube entitled "SOCOM is Dead".

Overall its now as good as any of the older SOCOM versions. Graphics are on par with other FPS Playstation 3 games. It's a game where team play is important.

Many people try and compare SOCOM, a non respawn Third Person Shooter, to Call of Duty, a First Person Shooter, mostly respawn game. To me, COD is more arcade like as evident with people not using their mics to coordinate.

If you liked any of the old SOCOMs, you will probably like this new version. It finally has the feel of the older games. There are still some things that don't work in the game play but overall, its a fun game.

If you haven't played SOCOM, its less of an arcade game then the Call of Duty games and less involved then Tom Clancy's Rainbow 6 games.

Pros

Clans
Exciting game play
Many game type options (suppression, escort, etc)
Great graphics
Server and room are shown on Friend's List
Lower Price

Cons

Can't throw grenades around corners
Room and Server info doesn't include room number
Room names are on the server list are not alphabetized
Still some lag/frame rate issues
Clan battle scheduling/rank not live yet
No offline play
Controls are not as good as other shooters

Neutral

The last update includes Medals

UPDATE June 2009

Slant Six and Sony have really dropped the ball on the SOCOM franchise. 8 months after its release we are still waiting on downloadable maps from the PlayStation Store. While the vast majority of bugs are gone, the wait on downloadable content is being blamed on testing a massive patch that will fix just about everything and add a clan war system. In the meantime, perhaps SOCOM's biggest competitor Activision released Call of Duty: World at War AFTER SOCOM and last week released its SECOND Map Pack. SOCOM has a following, one that Sony truly has put through the wringer with its releasing this title 2 months before a playable patch was released. I saw industry reviews on the initial bug plagued offering as low as 6! Anyway, this patch, 1.5 that has been promised for months may be out any day or as some have joked, in time for the PlayStation 4 system. Those who have played these few maps to death eagerly await new maps.

First things first. The CONS:
There's no actual game. You just play against other players on a handful of online maps.
It takes some trial and error to understand how to play well and find the kind of rooms you like.
This can be frustrating, as you often end up playing with pros at first that kill you over and over.

With that out of the way though, this really isn't a bad game. It's actually my favorite online shooter. Most of the bad vibe surrounding this game was due to how much this game sucked when it was released. Patches have been released that make this thing perform light years better than it did. Third person is simply more fun when it comes to playing against real people and not computer AI. And these maps don't really give unfair advantage to anyone. It's hard to set up shop as a sniper and expect that no one will track you down. They'll come at you from all angles.

My advice: If you want to like this game (by which I mean kick ass at this game), then get online with one of your ps3 owning friends and create rooms for just the two of you to get a feel for the controllers, the guns and the maps. Because this really is a good game. Like with any online game though; it's fun grows in proportion to the number of people you know and can play against. At the end of the day, there's really nothing like shooting your best friend in the face with a shotgun and you both end up living to laugh about it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dont believe the negative comments on this game., October 13, 2009

When it was 1st released "yes" it had lots of bugs. The last patch 1.50 has fixed alot of these issues. Theres little if any lag. Its not the typical run-n-gun game. It requires tactical teamwork and skill. There's a few things that need to be fixed but nothing serious that takes away from the game. The one thing that Slant Six needs to fix is the delay on new maps, for this reason I only gave it 4 stars. Other than that it's a great game if you want something tactical.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but it does have it's problems..., January 29, 2009
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: SOCOM: US Navy Seals Confrontation Stand Alone (Video Game)
I've been playing all the Socom's since Socom 2 & although the maps keep getting better they just aren't getting the rest quite right.

In Confrontation you only get 7 maps. 4 are new but 3 of them (Crossroads, Desert Glory & Frostfire) are just updated maps from the past. I enjoy the updated maps but I think they should've been add-ons at a later date. I want some actual new maps. Over 3 months into the game now & there's still been no word on any future add-ons.

This game is only playable online & the lag is quite ridiculous most nights. They always seem to be working on this problem but still don't have it fixed.

Being able to follow people is a pain. At first the only way you had available was to message people (through the PS3 messages) & tell them where to go. They've changed it a little bit so now on the main PS3 screen you can kind of see where people are. There are only so many spaces though so if they are in a long titled lobby & room then it's still not possible to know exactly where they are. Yes, you can send invites but that's a pain as well because you can only send while in the lobby & that's if you have time after the screen finally loads.

I enjoy playing most game types. You have Demolition, Suppression, Control, Extraction, Escort & Breach. A new type for this game is Elimination where you can't win a round unless you eliminate everybody on the opposite team.

No vehicles. That's a bummer. & you can't make ranked rooms. There are some pre-set ranked rooms but it gets pretty old playing the same stuff over & over & getting stuck with night maps all the time. You can make your own rooms but they will be unranked.

Overall I still enjoy this game but I think they're dropping the ball. For me it's still fun to play with all my clan members & friends & that's what makes the game great for me. I would still recommend this game.

Glant Six Killed Socom.
I have been a huge SOCOM fan ever since the the first game on PS2, but Confrontation is by far and is the worst and most embarrassing game of the SOCOM series!
It took two hours to download the updates, while I waited and then come to find out you can only play it online against other gamers? No story mode, WTF?
I'll always read the reviews before buying another game.
For me socom is dead

This is the worst game I have ever played! It took two hours to download the updates, while I patiently waited and then come to find out you can only play it online against other gamers? NO STORY MODE! Also, I could not get into any games, it will let me join a game, but only as an observer, so I have no idea how the game plays. I am going to resell this piece of junk as soon as I can!
