Socomtastic!,

The newest version of Socom does something many wanted in Socom 3, it includes the previous version's, Socom 3, online game. So many gamers who bought Socom 3 wanted to play Socom 2 maps online that Zipper released a map pack with Socom 2 maps and plans to release another soon. Zipper avoided that with this version by including all the Socom 3 maps and allowing you to play people with Socom 3 online. GREAT!!
This newest version of Socom, many think, is the hardest yet. The computer controlled enemy (called Mercinaries) is much smarter, harder to kill and their aim is dead on. Many complained about how easy Socom 3 was to defeat. This new version at the toughest level will have at least a couple of missions that will challange even top players. You can play the game in more then one mode. You can go through the game in Campaign Mode both offline, and with up to 3 others, online at 3 levels of difficulty (Ensign, Commander and Admiral). You can do "Instant Action" Games on or offline which are one level missions (levels you have already played) with goals such as capturing the enemy leader, recovering a briefcase, etc.. You can also of course, play in online games with up to 32 players like the previous versions. New for Combined Assault: Badges. Previous versions had goodies like grips and weapons that were unlocked by beating the entire game at different levels. Now to unlock items you need a certain number of badges. Badges are awarded for doing different things in the game like a certain amount of kills with a certain type of weapon as well as beating the entire game at a certain level. New for the game. Triangles now appear over team mates heads and can be seen through walls. This helps in reducing friendly fire kills and in seeing where your team is in relation to you. When a team member is killed their triangle slowly fades out so you can see where that happened. This new feature also was updated to those playing Socom 3 online. Also new is a few new weapons. Some need to be unlocked. Perhaps the most used new weapon is for the Seals, the MG36, a light machine gun. Overall, if you liked Socom 3 you will enjoy the new maps and the ability to play Socom 3 maps online with your same account information. The feel and play is pretty much the same as Socom 3 online but there are a couple of minor changes such as new sounds. I am giving the game a 4 because there are a couple of things they need to fix. The patch to make Socom 3's voice system compatible with Combined Assualt always on hotmike (in Co-Op mode) has made non-Co-Op voice chat work for only some of the players some of the time. It most likely is an issue where players with a slower connection can't talk or hear in large map game play. I have yet to play a Co-Op game where the hot mike has not worked, but there have been many games where voices lag and echo in other players mics and that can be annoying. Also, when a player on your Friends or Clan List is in Co-Op mode and in a password game you can't enter the password and join the game plus you don't know what server they are on to find them and enter the game. There are also some software code bugs that if you play long enough you will run into like not being able to set a charge on a structure that you are required to blow up to complete the map or your offline teammates won't follow you. Plus there are a couple of things I thought the game still needs like if you get shot while getting ready to throw a hand grenade you should drop it where you are and it should explode. Overall its a great extention of Socom 3 that has more difficult and engaging gameplay that forces players to relie on skill and brains. UPDATE 11/2007 More then a year after its announced release, the second online Map Pack was released this month online for $5.99. It contains several maps from Socom 2. This last Map Pack has brought many players back to the game. Those hoping for the next installment of the game for PS3 that was supposed to be released around this time now at least have some different maps to play on until next year's new version is released. UPDATE 5/09 While I haven't played this version in a year and a half, I learned not long ago that there was a final update and a free map pack released for this version of SOCOM before the release of SOCOM: US Navy Seals Confrontation Stand Alone last summer. Since its (too early) release Confrontation has gone from almost unplayable to stable but there has been no Map Packs released yet for Confrontation. Those with the backwards compatible PS3's may want to pick up this discounted bargain while waiting for new content to be released for Confrontation.

I really like this series of games. They are very innovative in design. What's cool is you get to command your guys in combat.
There are a couple of glitches, where one of your members may be stuck moving inside a wall and you can't get him out. But, when you are in a new location and you happen to turn around, he's there with you. Even if you've been issuing "Follow" command the whole time. But, overall, the missions are cool. What I like about this game is you get to try different paths. It's very challenging. Now, here's what I don't like. The scoring. At the end of Socom III you had a rating. A, B, C, etc. Here you don't you have a point based system. Sometimes it's confusing. I actually completed some Bonus objectives, but even when I got to the scoring screen it showed that I had no bonus points? Very confusing. Aside from this, the game is very well done. I love the graphics, the sound, the environments. Very, very cool. I highly recommend this game to anyone who enjoys combat games that require you to be PATIENT and THINK about what you are doing. This isn't a "Call of Duty", or a "Medal of Honor" game. Check it out. I'm pretty much a Socom fan for good!!!

I liked the new features in particular telling specific teammates what to do. The badges idea is good and adds extended life to the game by trying to obtain additional badges. SOCOM is by the far the most consistently entertaining first person shooter franchise.
I did experince a lot of glitches / bugs in the game. Telling a teammate to do something and he doesnt do it like handcuff someone. The character will say "OK" but not do it. Other bugs I found were bad guys who can shoot through mountains, helicopters that are blown up and magically reappear and the most frustrating friendly fire problems where your buddies always, ALWAYS throw the grenades in the wrong place and blow you up. ( The best thing to do is not outfit them with grenades at all.) Although its frustrating when you shoot a badguy in the chest from 400 yards away with a scoped .50 caliber rifle only to have him shoot you with his AK47 from the hip and kill you , it does add replay value and teaches you the lesson there is no such thing as cover. I think its fun and worth buying but do not agree its the best yet.

This is my first Socom Game. I've been playing alot of Call Of Duty lately, so I was a little hungry for something new. I did my research and saw that Socom was the sure fire game to quench my desire for another great shooter. The others were M rated which im not allowed to play yet, so I bought the only T rated game of Socom called Combined Assult. The gameplay is cool, and I admit is a little better than Call Of Duty's. You command your own squadron of soilders, so strtegy does come to play in this one. You can also fully costomize your weapons, and equip items to you and your squad members. The missions are pretty hard, but nothing fully impossible to defeat. Overall I gave Socom US Navy Seals Combined Assult a 4/5. Big Ups.

If you liked SOCOM 3, then you will like this one, too! lots of things are the same, adding the instant action feature like in Fireteam Bravo; you can earn badges to unlock cool weapons; a new pistol: The R44M! It's a revolver; more attachments such as a shotgun, tear gas launcher, etc; and more! I've already beaten this game, and since you can't unlock weapons by beating the game on which ever rank like in its predecessor, I play instant action more because its more fun (you can actually choose where to be and what you want to do in a map), and it's a faster way for earning badges. The medkit was a great idea, and so is reviving teammates, but lessens the reality. Enough said, you gotta play it for yourself to see how good it is!

I don't play video games all that much anymore and I really wanted to find a game that everyone was talking about. I had heard a lot about Socom and so I went all out for the newest one - Combined Assault. The graphics are great and the controls aren't too hard to master. The missions are just a little bit slow - maybe because it is just the middle levels of the game. I can definitely see that this would be a really great game to play against your buddies or online.
The ABSOLUTE WORST part of this is that you can't play two player. I really think that would have changed the entire experience for me.

Good game, but the AI has gotten worse.,

It's a very good game, but despite a good selection of campaigns, the single-player mode feels like a training tutorial to what the game is mainly all about... the on line multiplayer mode. The graphics, character models, and menue system are all good, but during the single player campaign, the friendly and enemy AI do a lot of dumb things that will send you back to the reload screen, and the story and motivations of the enemy deserves a bit more attention to detail. Killing enemies such as talking flowers, bazooka weilding houses, and giant mutated teddy bears in a game such as Final Fantasy is ok. (no one's gonna question the enemy and their motives in a Final Fantasy game). Killing enemies such as terrorist in a modern day game however, is a bit more tricky of a subject matter for game developers to handle and dish out. It should be the duty of game developers to present intelligent material in their games that helps people make sense out of these senseless times that we live,(and in this case) play in. Instead, they are possibly giving ammo (literally and figuratively) to kids (who play games such as this one) that are prone to believe that Islam (and other "un-American" beliefs) and all its followers should be shot. In the game, something drives these men to do what they do. Something moves men and women enough not only to kill, but also to die. Unfortunately, that something is never fully explained in this game. I don't think, "just shoot and kill" is the message that the game is trying to present to gamers, but subject materials like killing terrorist in a video game should be more fully explained, since this is a very sensitive part of life nowadays, just so that people dont get the wrong impression of the game. Maybe this is the reason why it got a "M" rating. It doesn't take long to get through the SOCOM games (I finished the single player campaing in 4 SOCOM games... socom 1,2,3 & Combined Assault in 14 days) but the meat and potatoes of the game is having fun destroying all of your friends in on line multiplayer matches. This is what the game is mainly designed for.

This game is undeniably the best shooter on the ps2. it is surprisingly deep with weapon choices and customization and is very entertaining to play. i spent more hours than i am willing to admit playing the massive campaign, and even more on its fun and competitive multiplayer. it it truly a great game. Do yourself a favor and pick this one up.

The best thing I liked about SOCOM: Combined Assault was the weapons. There is a variety to choose from like the M249 SAW gun very good for suppressing fire, and more!!! And you can pick up fallen enemy weapons like the SASR, AK-74 and others. There were also very cool rocket launchers like the AT-4 and other pretty cool stuff, the rocket travels somewhat slowly--that adds realism to the game. Also in this game you can switch views like from 1st shooter person view to a 3rd person shooter view that's what was cool. What I didn't like was you can only drive 2 vehicles in the whole game,a stealth HUMMVEE and a truck. I thought there would be more, but no. And the story line isn't that interesting its just about a paramilitary organization that are taking a made up country under control. It's pretty boring when you get more in it. The sound is pretty good but the graphics only get two and a half stars from me. I would say its an ok game.
