Product Description

Product Description

The SOG Specialty Knives & Tools AE02-CP Aegis is an easy-to-handle tool that can stand up to tough use, while showcasing top-end opening and locking technology. Made of AUS-8 steel with an attractive hardcase black TiNi finish, the 3.5-inch straight edge, folding blade has a clip point shape that allows a quicker and deeper puncture upon insertion and makes quick work of any task. When you start to open the blade, SOG’s patented S.A.T. (SOG Assisted Technology) takes over and high-tension coil springs propel the blade the rest of the way open for fast, easy, one-handed access. A Piston lock utilizes a movable bar wedged between the blade tang and knife handle to securely lock the blade in place when in the open position. The ergonomically contoured and well balanced handle has a black finish and is made of a high strength, abrasion and impact resistant glass-reinforced nylon that will fit comfortably in your hand. The checkered Digi-Grip provides a sure grip for safe, accurate positioning and extra anti-slip security. A reversible pocket clip extends from the back of the handle, allowing the Aegis to sit low in your pocket for the most discreet carry possible. This feature can also be used as a money clip. This knife has a closed length of 4.75-inches, overall length of 8.25-inches, blade thickness of 0.13-inches and weighs 3.1-ounces. The SOG AE02-CP Aegis Knife comes with a limited lifetime warranty that protects against defects in manufacturing and materials. Each SOG product is created with the help of company founder and chief engineer, Spencer Frazer. Known for their uncompromising style and performance, these knives and tools showcase innovation, dependability and a unique, futuristic style that has garnered awards and recognition worldwide. SOG products have also won favor among law enforcement, military and industrial customers that rely on their tools to perform flawlessly in the toughest, most adverse conditions.

An Ambitious Name for an Ambitious Knife
Aegis means "shield" or "protection" in Greek, and it is also the code name for both the world's premier integrated air defense system and the sea-based element of the United States Ballistic Missile Defense System. Thanks to SOG's thoughtful design features, this versatile knife lives up to its illustrious name. The knife opens to a full length of 8.25 inches, and its 3.5-inch straight blade is crafted from AUS-8 stainless steel for improved strength and edge retention. The black TiNi finish on this blade offers improved durability along with anti-reflective good looks.

SOG Assisted TechnologyCryogenic Heat Treatment for a Sharp, Dependable Blade
SOG's unique cryogenic heat treatment process increases the toughness and wear resistance of the blade. The blade's temperature is slowly taken down to less than -300 degrees Fahrenheit and then slowly brought back up to room temperature. This stress relieves the material on an atomic level and increases overall strength and edge retention. This means the knife edge stays sharp longer with significantly less micro-fracturing and edge-chipping.

SOG Assisted Technology Increases Speed, Safety, and Usability
When you start to open the AE-02's blade, SOG's patented S.A.T. (SOG Assisted Technology) takes over and high-tension coil springs propel the blade the rest of the way open. This means fast, easy, one-handed access to the AE-02's blade whenever you need it.

Additionally, the unique design of S.A.T. offers security and peace of mind by incorporating locking mechanisms that are stronger, more reliable, and easier to access than other mechanisms. For Aegis Series knives, this means a safety on the side of the handle that delivers extra protection against accidental openings. When the safety is protecting you, its button shows green to confirm that you're ready to slip the knife in your pocket. When you switch the safety off, this button turns red to signal that your blade is ready for deployment.

Ergonomic, Slip-Free Grip Ensures Accurate Handling
This Aegis knife is designed to sit comfortably in either hand, and it's well-balanced for a natural feel that inspires confident cuts. SOG's trademarked, checkered DigiGrip handle provides a sure grip for safe, accurate positioning, while tacky rubber inserts in the handle offer extra anti-slip security. Plus this handle is crafted from tough, glass-reinforced Zytel--a compound that's lightweight, abrasion resistant, and impact resistant.

The knife weighs in at just 3.1 ounces, and it includes SOG's trademarked bayonet clip, which allows the folded knife to ride securely and unobtrusively in your pocket when not in use. This clip is reversible, which means it can be positioned on whichever side of the knife is most convenient for you.

The SOG AE-02 Aegis Folding Knife is backed by a lifetime warranty that protects against defects in manufacturing and materials.

I just got the SOG Aegis and frankly, I'm stunned at how amazing it is. SOG really raised the bar with this knife for sure. The website claims the knife weighs only 3.1 ounces...I am dumfounded how such a large assisted opening knife can weigh so little and still feel lightweight at the same time! The SOG Aegis has very few problems with it and will be the only EDC (every day carry) knife I use until my Ontario Rat 1 folder arrives.

Pros:
The name is AWESOME
Looks, this knife will win ALL of the beauty contests
SOG's SAT assisted opening is top notch
Blade is strong
One of the best factory edges out there
SOG's Arclock is rated at something like 1000 lbs of pressure so you can guarantee it won't close on your fingers
Clip is placed at the bottom of the knife so it doesn't interfere when opening the blade
Easily opens in either hand due to spring assisted opening
Safety switch is hard to engage accidentally
Extremely lightweight
Carry clip carries blade extra low in pockets
Jimping bites well into thumb
Blade is small enough for every day carry, but easily large enough to be used tactically
Handle is made out of Zytel, which is easily my favorite handle material.

This is a great blade. The blade shape is very useful. It is not the strongest alloy but it holds an edge quite well. the handle is beefier than in looks and feels quite secure in my hand. Tension for the assisted opening mechanism is just enough to be convenient and cool without being unnecessarily aggressive or being hard to close. the pocket clip features a nice design that allows it to be reversible and sit deep inside a pocket. I am not a fan of the SOG logo cut out in the clip but it is fairly inconspicuous in the black finish. It is a lot lighter than it looks due to not having steel liners. I find that this is a big plus for me. It sits light in my pocket while being strong enough for my needs. Since I am not in combat nor walking around looking for a knife fight, it is plenty strong enough. MSRP is too high but it can be had for a much lower price here on Amazon. I find it a good value.

Came sharp right out of the box. Light and strong. Good jimping. Very little side to side play, and you really have to push on the front of the blade to even get a slight hint of movement for up/down play. I am going to contact SOG on that since I don't know what constitutes a lot of blade play, but it seems normal to me. After the very little bit of up/down play, the blade doesn't budge. Don't want to put any more force behind it for fear I might bend/break something on the inside. Truly you don't need the safety because the knife stays put when closed, but it is still nice to have if you want it. Pocket clip is truly awesome, can't see the knife when in the pocket, and the bottom of the clip curls up so that you have something to tug on when pulling the knife out. Also provides a small place to grip for your bottom to fingers when opening the knife. Spring is very tight and provides good response all the way from close to open. As you use the knife, you will have residue of what you cut show up on the TiNi of the blade, but this does not look bad. All in all, a good purchase and recommended.

***Update*** My blade falls within the specs outline by the response of the SOG rep. Completely satisfied with this knife and VERY little blade play.

Hi,

When it comes down to blade play, some side to side and up and down will be normal. This will wear in over time but it should never be more than an 1/8 of an inch side to side or 1/16th of an inch up and down. If it is more, then we need the knife so we can take a look at it and see what is going on.

Excellent knife. I wanted a good every day carry knife that wasn't too heavy and could be easily opened one-handed, as many tasks I need it for involve holding something as I open the knife.

The knife opens easily, and has a safety to prevent it from opening in your pocket if you're worried about that. It come sharp enough to shave, and holds an edge well.

It's not a big bruiser of a knife, but it's good enough for everyday use. I just wouldn't try to pry things with it too much.

I highly recommend this knife. SOG quality, light weight, great assisted opening mechanism and sharp. Its light weight enough to carry in your front pocket and strong and big enough to take on wilderness backpacking trips. Get it, you won't be dissappointed.
