An Ambitious Name for an Ambitious Knife

Aegis means "shield" or "protection" in Greek, and it's also the code name for both the world's premier integrated air defense system and the sea-based element of the United States Ballistic Missile Defense System. Thanks to SOG's thoughtful features, this versatile knife lives up to its illustrious name. The knife opens to a full length of 7 inches, and its 3-inch straight blade is crafted from AUS-8 stainless steel for improved strength and edge retention. The satin finish on this blade is both lustrous and unforgettable.

Find the Difference in the Details

Cryogenic Heat Treatment Guarantees a Sharp, Durable Blade

SOG's unique cryogenic heat treatment increases the toughness and wear resistance of the knife's blade. The process takes the knife slowly down in temperature to less than 300 degrees Fahrenheit and then back to room temperature again. This process relieves stress in the material on an atomic level and increases overall strength and edge retention; Knife edges stay sharp longer, with significantly less micro-fracturing and edge-chipping.

Spring to life with SOG Assisted Technology

When you start to open the AE21-CP blade, SOG's patented S.A.T. (SOG Assisted Technology) works through the balance of opposing high-tension coil springs. As one opens the blade, the force to propel the knife open becomes greater than the closing force and the blade opens on its own. The end result is the blade propelling open once the operator has initiated the one-handed opening action. With fast, easy access, use the AE21-CP blade whenever you need it.

Ergonomic Handle Design

The Aegis knife is designed to sit comfortably in either hand, and is well-balanced for a natural feel that inspires confident cuts. SOG's trademarked, checkered DigiGrip handle provides a sure grip for safe, accurate positioning. The tacky rubber inserts on the handle offer extra anti-slip security. Plus, this handle is crafted from tough, glass-reinforced nylon, a compound that is lightweight, abrasion resistant and impact resistant.

Safety Locking Mechanism

Along the handle of the knife you'll find a safety locking mechanism to hold the blade securely closed when not in use. This features ensures the knife is safe and secure in your pocket.

I just got the knife tonight, and so far I love it! I also own the Kershaw Leek stainless, SOG Twitch II, and Gerber EVO Jr. Compared to the Kershaw Leek stainless which seems to be THE most popular assisted opener; The pocket clip rides much deeper in the pocket, it is very hard for anybody who is not a knife person (who recognizes the SOG logo on the clip) to recognize it as a knife. The pocket clip is not adjustable for tip down carry, but I much prefer tip up carry as the knife is ready to deploy as soon as it is out of your pocket. The safety is fairly easy to turn off with one hand, although I don't use it on the Leek and I don't plan on using it on the Mini Aegis either. I DO use the the safety on my Twitch II after it deployed once in my left pocket; I believe the flipper got pressured against the corner of my pocket (Not a good idea to carry backwards like that). I do love flippers, but the thumb studs on the Mini Aegis work beautifully. Size and weight; I LOVE the lightness of this knife! According to SOG the Mini Aegis comes in at 2.0 ounces. The all stainless Leek is 3.0 ounces and the Twitch II is 2.6 ounces. That one ounce makes a big difference. One thing I love about the Leek is that it is very thin. The Mini Aegis is a little fatter, but the weight difference, deeper pocket clip, and great ergonomics make up for it. The Mini Aegis feels much more grippy in the hand than the metal scales of the Leek or the Twitch II, and the palm swell makes it very comfortable to hold in the hand. I also like the blade shape better than the Leek, it seems to be less fragile. The Leek and Mini Aegis are both fairly easy to close one handed. The Twitch II is much more of a challenge to close one handed safely.Read more ›

I just purchased the Sog Mini. When I first took it out of the box, my heart sank as if I had just been duped. The handle felt cheap. As I got used to the knife it became clear to me that this knife serves its purpose well. It is a very light EDC (every day carry) piece. It is so light and stows so nicely that you'll forget that you have it with you. The blade is a good mid quality steel and the knife came razor sharp. The clip allows this knife to sit way deep in the pocket (which I love). The clip is also reversable so you can place the knife in either pocket. The knife opens and closes very well. Mine came adjusted pretty well. I have heard from others that theirs needed tweaking... There are no steel reinforcements in the handle so, the fiber reinforced nylon handle takes all the torsional loads. Over time with torsional abuse, I am willing to bet that the handle will weaken in the pin area that holds the blade and the blade will have play. Use this knife for its sole purpose (EDC and light use) and it should serve you very well. However, if you are rough on your equipment, I feel there are better choices at the cost of a couple ounces. Hope that helps!

I saw reviews of the knife on youtube and most are spot on. I wanted the full size Aegis in all black but I work as a professional nerd in an office setting doing work for real military operators. I would look like an idiot walking around with a big tacticool blade. This gives me all the functionality I need and looks appropriate for someone in my position.
I have only had 2 issues with the knife. First, the jimping is cut backwards in my opinion. If it were angled in the opposite direction or even perpendicular to the bladetop, it would catch more and be be more effective. Second, the opening process is different. If you are use to a standard (non-assisted) knife. Most people have trained themselves to make a circlular motion with their thumb to fully open the blade. With this knife, you have to learn to just flick the blade straight out. If you attempt to make the circular motion with your thumb, the spring will throw the blade in place and when your thumb catches up, it runs right into the edge - ouch!

I simply love this knife for EDC. It is slim, light, and fast to deploy using the thumb stud. The pocket clip sits deep with no chance of it falling out. The blade comes scalpel-sharp, and I find I really prefer the axial lock release to either back or frame locks.

Also, just personal preference, when the blade is out I really like the design with flowing curves top and bottom. It is one of the best looking EDC knives out there.

The only thing missing is a lanyard hole, though in a pinch you could tie one to the pocket clip. Also, there is just a little up/down wiggle in the blade when locked that did not go away with tightening the pivot.

Overall, though, this knife is near-perfect and a good (not great) value.

Oldest son kept loosing his rather slippery Buck and decided to give him something different at Christmas. The AE-22 was a perfect size and went with the TiNi for the "cool" factor. The quality is first rate with an edge you can shave with. These come from the factory tight but after a little loosening the spring assist is a neat feature. The size is large enough to hold comfortably and small enough not to make a lump in your pocket. Also has a clip to hang inside the pocket without making holes in bottom of the pocket. The synthetic grips make it light weight as well.

After opening endless Amazon boxes with their notorious gravel impregnated sealing tape, the edge is still like new. Even more amazing is the black TiNi coating is still scratch free. How do I know all this if I gave it to my son? Liked it well enough that I bought one for myself.
