SOG Assisted Technology for Speed and Safety
Fast, safe, one-handed opening makes SOG Flash Series knives incredibly easy to handle in a wide variety of situations. Once you start opening the knife, SOG's Patented SOG Assisted Technology, or S.A.T., takes over. Through the balance of opposing high-tension coil springs in the knife, the force to propel the knife open becomes greater than the closing force, and the blade will open on its own. This unique feature means that if you are using your dominant hand on another task, you can just as easily open the FSA-98 with your other hand.

For security and peace of mind, S.A.T. was developed in conjunction with a superior locking system. The unique design of S.A.T. knives allows them to use locking mechanisms that are stronger, more reliable, and easier to access ambidextrously than conventional liner locks.

For Flash Series knives, this means the blade is held in place with a reliable piston lock that can be released quickly with a sliding button. An additional safety lock offers extra security when the blade is closed. For easy reference, the lock switch shows red when the knife is ready to open.

Cryogenic Heat Treatment for Sharp, Dependable Blades
Of course the workhorse of any knife is the cutting surface, and FSA-98 offers a full, 3.5-inch, half-serrated blade with an elegant satin finish.

SOG's proprietary Cryogenic Heat Treatment process ensures that this blade will stay sharp over the long haul. This intensive process takes more than 48 hours and involves slowly bringing the blade's temperature down to less than -300 degrees Fahrenheit, then bringing it slowly back to room temperature. The stress created through this process relieves the material on an atomic level and increases overall strength and edge retention.

Elegant, Ergonomic Design for Ease of Use
Even if your blade is sharp, it's hard to make the cuts you want if a knife doesn't sit comfortably in your hand. That's why the handle on this knife features a unique, ergonomic contour. Crafted from tough, glass-reinforced Zytel, the handle helps ensure that your knife is both durable and well-balanced. And it is lightly textured to prevent slippage.

At just 3.1 ounces, this folding knife is lightweight and easy to carry. A reversible, bayonet-mounted clip extends from the back of the handle, allowing the knife to sit low in your pocket for the most discreet carry possible.

This knife is backed by a lifetime warranty that protects against defects in workmanship and materials.

I own a copy of the Flash II. I would give it five stars as a utility knife, three stars as a defense backup, and five stars for every-day carry. Allow me to share my experience.

The knife has great quality for its Amazon price. This means factory sharp is respectable, edge retention is good, sharpening is easy (for plain edge version), and grip is good. Please do not compare $50 knives against $250 knives.

This is a great folding knife. The safety switch is a plus for me because I have kids. It's good to know that when my kids grabbed my knife (it fell to the floor when I fumbled), they could not open it until I choose to teach them about the safety.

The one-handed opening design called Assisted Opening works well. It really is a pleasure to open and close as advertised. But it's not as slick as my Kershaw Blur. The Flash II is fast, but not lightening fast. The locking mechanism is sturdy. Not as fancy as the Arc-lock on my $100 Benchmade.

The Flash II is a great carry knife. It is light weight (about 3.1 oz for zytel handle version), rides deep in the pocket (thanks to the clip design), and has a safety switch to prevent accidental opening. The plastic (excuse me, Zytel) handle is very light because SOG did not reinforce it with metal insert. So expect more play in the knife even after tightening the main screw - it's just the flex from the handle.

This is not a strong fighting knife. The blade is thicker than, say, a Kershaw Leek or Onion but is not meant for hacking similar to say a cleaver. The blade is short for a fighter at only 3 1/2 inches.

But this can be better than most pocket knives if you ever have to cover your retreat with a backup knife. (if this happens, you are in deep doodoo anyways). That's because of the grip design and blade design. The grip shape is better at preventing your hand from sliding onto the blade in a thrust. The blade is sturdier and longer than most pocket knives. So in a pinch, I'd rather have a Flash II over a leek or a blur.

The utility has been great over the past five years that I've owned my copy. The factory edge stayed sharp for more than a year while regularly used to cut up cardboard boxes. Sharp as in opening envelops with little resistance or ragged paper edge. I know I'm not supposed to use a knife as a prier but my Flash II withstood the occasional gardening abuse.

I whole heartedly recommend this knife for every-day-carry utility.

There are things about this knife I don't like, but then I find myself carrying it more often than any other knife I own.

Here's what I like:

1. Assisted opening. I own several, and I don't think I'd buy a regular opening knife again.

2. The clip is superior. It's strong (one reviewer commented about lateral pressure damaging it...why on earth would you do that?). Best of all, only the clip shows in your pocket, not part of the top of the knife as with almost all others.

3. It's incredibly sharp. I can shave hair off my arm with it with no problem.

4. It's incredibly light weight for the size (I have the Zytel handle)

5. It's very resonably priced.

And...what I don't like

1. The steel is not as good as I'd like. It's "good" quality steel, but not great. Plus it's a straight flat grind, which is asthetically boring.

2. The blade thickness is not what I expected. I haven't tried anything extreme with it, so it's not been an issue.

3. Yes, the safety will very occasionally latch in your pocket. However, you have to be insane to get into a knife fight...nobody wins. Using a knife for defense is nuts. When I was a deputy, I saw real-world results...dear God! Get a concealed gun permit if you're worried about self defense.

So...I give it 4 stars. I have a Kershaw Blur that I like better except for the clip, which leaves about 1/2" of the handle exposed. I don't know why they would design it that way. When I carry it, I just carry it in my pocket without clipping.

If you want a quality, inexpensive utility knife, this is it.

This is a great knife. I have several SOG knives and this is the one I carry every day. Razor sharp and the serration near the base of the blade is great for cutting rope, etc. The deployment mechanism is as close to a switch that you'll find. A slight thumb pressure in an opening direction and it "flashes" open. I've NEVER had it open accidentally. And if you are paranoid, there is a small flip lock for that as well. The clip is extended and hides the knife just under your pocket rim but places it in optimum position for quick access. Light, strong and SOG quality. By the way, if you are thinking the Flash I is just a little smaller, it's not. It is a lot smaller, almost a toy compared to this medium sized all around all purpose utility/defense blade. Buy it! You won't be sorry.
