The high performance SEAL Pup from SOG Specialty Knives and Tools (model M37-N) carries on the tradition of supplying the world's elite military forces. It features a straight-edged powder coated blade with a long cutting edge, ergonomic handle with deeper finger grooves, and added blade spine rasp for notching, filing, and thumb placement. It's complemented by a nylon carry sheath with accessory pouch. All SOG products are guaranteed against defects in workmanship and materials for the life of the original purchaser.

Cryogenic Heat Treatment

SOG's unique cryogenic heat treatment process increases the toughness and wear resistance of our blades. Taking the knife slowly down in temperature to less than -300 degrees F and then back to room temperature. This stress relieves the material on an atomic level and increases overall strength as well as edge retention. Knife edges stay sharp longer with significantly less micro-fracturing and edge-chipping.

Caring for Your Fixed Blade Knife

Keeping your knife clean, dry, oiled and sharp are the primary defenses against corrosion, wear, and potential injury. Be sure to clean the blade and handle after each use--however, do not soak your knife in water. A mild solution of soap and water should remove any dirt and debris that may have accumulated during use (avoid harsh detergents such as laundry or dish soap, and chlorine products).

After cleaning or after exposure to moisture be sure to completely dry your knife blade and handle, taking special care with any sensitive handle materials. Use a soft cotton cloth or chamois and a small amount of moisture-displacing oil (such as WD-40 or 3-in-1), on the blade only, to prevent water spots and oxidation from forming. Fingerprints and weather are the primary causes of rusting or corrosion on a knife blade. To keep your knife looking its best, SOG recommends that you give your blade a light coat of oil after each cleaning, and prior to long term storage.

I've had my SOG seal pup for a few years now. I bought it when I was deploying to Iraq in 2008 and I still have it now.

If you're a knife snob, a steel snob, or someone who buys things to impress other people, pass on this knife.

If you are looking for the perfect woods, survival, utility, or combat knife, this is a great choice.

Mine went through 15 months of hard abuse, and I learned that it is really the perfect knife if you live out of a pack. I walked the streets of Baghdad, Barqubah, Diyala... as an infantryman just about every single day, subjecting this knife to constant work of not just cutting, but digging, prying, and all the other things you shouldn't do with a knife, as well as being exposed to hell on earth. The finish on the blade looks pretty beat, but you know what? It still holds a razor sharp edge when I sharpen it, and keeps it for a good while, the steel has not rusted, and the handle is still in one piece. This is a very reliable knife.

It's a great size. Large enough to be extremely useful, small enough to forget you're carrying it. It has gone from my combat knife to my woods/survival/hunting knife. It's light weight, takes abuse, holds an edge well, and doesn't break. Folding knives are ok for day to day use, but I find that sooner or later clips break, springs wear out, pivots wear out, and they are easy to lose if you live out of a bag.

A lot of sheath knives are obnoxiously large and a little too "taticool" for me. SOG hit a home run with this knife, and if mine ever dies, I will be happy to shell out the cash for another one.

I'm an avid outdoors person and my husband rule is always carry a good knife. Well, this is a great knife.

It is sharp out of the box (like mentioned by another reviewer), well-balanced, comfortable for my small hand, and I love the carrying sheath. Unlike others I think the sheath is very well thought out (perhaps SOG is trying to appeal to a broader public and make the sheath more functional/versatile to pull in more people). I very much doubt this was an afterthought. I company as good as SOG is not going to make a superior product and then not research and just throw together a sheath. I wear it on my hip, my backpack, my camelbak, and my leg. Love, love, love that I can do that and adapt it to my needs.

I haven't abused the knife as others have so I can't attest to how well the edge is held, but it is so sharp my husband can easily shave with it. My biggest requirements for my knife were fitting my small hand and having it be well-balanced (and of course sharp). This fits the bill.

Someone mentioned it was a high price for a fixed blade. When I am outdoors I do NOT want my knife to be on a multitool or flip open. By the simple virtue of the fact that it is two pieces makes for a less strong blade. I want the strength that comes from one piece of metal running the entire length of the knife (through the handle).

I liked it so much we purchased one for my mom who is an avid hiker as well. So, that should tell you something--we bought this knife twice because we were so pleased. I think you would be too.

This was my combat knife when was in Iraq, I used it to cut metal straps, wood, sand bags, heavy duty straps, and oil cans. The blade is highly durable, but the serrated part is hard to re-sharpen. The handle didn't go well with combat gloves, and the lanyard hole is too small to fit a chord. Get one with a hard case sheath because you can modify it to fit horizontally accross your belt, without other gear interference. The sheath also comes with an open slot for cutting chord with out taking the blade out.

I carried this as my primary knife in Iraq. I did file the grip for my thumb, drilled the butt for a dummy cord (the hole is an update post 2002), and replaced the sheath with a Spec Ops brand nylon sheath. I finally retired my original for the exact same model last year because the grip was worn smooth. That said, eight years of duty as my primary knife/pry bar/hammer in the field and deployed is quite impressive.

With all of the exotic steels out there folks have become "steel snobs" AUS 6 is getting a lot of bad press. I think people are forgetting that the AUS series is an exotic blade and contrary to what I keep hearing, far superior to 440s. I am in love with AUS 6! This steel is soft and loses it's edge after a few rough cuts however, this can be remedied in just a few swipes across a good sharpening stone. I keep one of those small stones in the sheath (I got the nylon sheath, not the Kydex). I know there are some really advanced stainless steels out there like the ATS-34 and then there are some cool alloys but sharpening those things can make them more trouble than they are worth. I know that AUS 6 supposedly attracts rust but if you keep it dry and clean with a little oil, it will be fine. I just wipe on a little 2-in-1 oil every once in a while and then wipe it clean. So far, I have used mine quite a bit and the powder coat is holding on well but from what I have been reading on some of the knife boards it will eventually come off. If that happens I will update this review to make it a 3. One more thing I want to comment on is the size. The pup is a perfect conceal knife or open carry.
