Product Description

The SOG Specialty Knives & Tools PD02N-CP Powerduo Multi-Tool is a knife and tool hybrid packed with (11) essential tools while remaining lightweight and compact for easy carrying. Made of 9Cr18MoV steel with an attractive black oxide finish, this multi-tool features needle nose pliers, a straight edge blade, blasting cap crimper, bottle opener, can opener, hard wire cutter, small and medium sized flat screwdrivers, a Philips screwdriver, a toothpick, tweezers and a nylon sheath. Exclusive interlocking gears allow SOG’s PowerPlier Series tools to be opened with a one-handed flip of the wrist and double the pliers force for the same pressure. The pliers can be easily removed, leaving a multi-blade pocketknife with a full size locking blade, screwdrivers, can/bottle openers, tweezers, etc. or the knife side can be taken away, leaving SOG's renowned Compound Leverage pliers with one-handed flip opening capability. This multi-tool has a lanyard hole, as well as secure clip attachment with hook and loop closure on its nylon sheath for added portability. The PD02N-CP has a closed length of 4.3-inches, and overall length of 6.2-inches and a weight of 6.3-ounces. Gears in the handle allow for both quick, one-handed opening along with twice the gripping strength of comparable multi-tools. Systems of gears in the handle amplify the applied force, creating a mechanical advantage that uses resistance to power the next gear. Weighing just 6.3 ounces and measuring 4.3 inches long, the PowerDuo is extremely portable and includes a nylon sheath for safekeeping. Its full range of tools include the 2.9-inch blade, three types of screwdrivers (Phillips, flat head and small flat head), can opener, tweezers, toothpick, and a bottle opener. It is now the perfect multitool for me to always have in my pocket.
masiaka
Flimsy build and the tool lock for screwdrivers/can opener does not work properly, i.e., tools can be closed when supposedly locked open.
Wade Miller
Tool looks good and has held up well through light to moderate use.

So, I have had a lot of success with SOG products: Top of the line, right up there with Victorinox and Gerber. Let me explain this let down. The Chinese factory it is made in has no quality control. I ordered two of these and they had faulty tool locking mechanisms right off the bat. Amazon.com was, as usual, perfect in their replacement. The two new SOG PowerDuos have working tool locking mechanisms, but are still very hard on one's thumb to operate. The knives are dull! Also, the toothpick and tweezers are very flimsy; the tweezers are unusable. This item had a good design and a horrid execution. This item has a sell price of $4. It would be the cheap, free knife given to someone after test driving a car. It's sad that SOG puts their name on this product. 2/13/13: I gave this product the benefit of the doubt. Final review: I tossed them in the garbage.

I've owned several multi-tools over the years, some good, some bad but the absolute best has been my Victorinox Swisstool which is still solid after 10 years. The Victorinox, however, costs around $100 and I find it to be more useful in a work environment as it possesses several tools & features that this tool doesn't, (make no mistake, this tool has features the Swisstool doesn't). Anyway on to this tool, the fact that this us a hybridized multi tool/knife makes it more desirable as a general everyday carry piece. The knife lock release is a bit awkward to access but not a big deal. The lock release for the additional tools is stiff on mine but I imagine it'll break in & loosen up after a while. I absolutely dig the fact that this comes w/ a toothpick and tweezers, a standard on Victorinox Swiss Army knives that's come in handy many time over the years. The plier end of the SOG more needle nose than full-on plier but that is great b/c in 9 out of 10 'delicate' applications my Swisstool's plier's tip has been too large. The smaller handle is the only reason I deducted a star, it feels a bit flimsy and is uncomfortable to squeeze tight w/o gloves on and even then twists easily. The combination of steel and plastic appears to be well executed, not too much plastic and apparently higher grade steel than other multis I've used. The pouch that comes w/ this isn't shabby either, heavy canvas w/ a tough plastic clip that curves to grab my belt well and 2 elastic pen holders on the sides. Very pleased thus far with this tool's design, performance and asthetic now let's see if it goes on for a decade like my Victorinox.

Probably one of the better multi tools that doesnt have all the crap you will never use in it. And it has an actual knife blade in it instead of one of those crappy little blades. Good Job SOG

I've owned several Gerber, Leatherman, and SOG multitools. Each has spoiled me on some point.
Note: This became a long review; skip down a paragraph for thoughts on just the Powerduo.

Gerber's tool count, outside access, and innovation (saw blades, cutter heads, spring loading) is thoughtful. However, difficult tool access, overall bulk with relatively small tools, and manufacturing 'polish' below its competitors (casting seams, loose pivots, lock release) are disappointing. -Flik, Legend
Leatherman's Wave has been my daily pocket-clip carry for some time now, occasionally swapped with the heavier holstered Surge or Gerber Legend for the saw blade and scissors. Beefy tools, good access, precision of a luxury car. The flat hex drive puts 20 sizes in my pocket without bulge or weight. But the drivers are all inside the tool, and opening is two-handed... unless you wear the tool down through use and throw it open one-handed. Don't try this with gloves :) The Sidekick tradeoff isn't as versatile.
...and only SOG has Compound Leverage.
My B69 and B66 are TANKS, rolling through or over everything. Cutting a nail, twisting out a stripped head screw, pulling staples sunk in fenceposts, ...Compound Leverage is game changing. The other brands will do it if I am 'man' enough. Compound Leverage eliminates the question. But aside from the outside accessible blades on the B66 (very nice btw...) all tools are inside. Open, uncover, dig, re-cover, close, work. Reverse. Brilliant individual locking, but that's tedious to tighten a screw or open a beer bottle. The other brands spoiled me.

The Powerduo promises SOG's Compound Leverage, with the outside accessibility of its competitors. Limited tool choice, but it overcomes the vast majority of daily-carry obstacles.

I bought this and the SOG Specialty Knives & Tools B66N-CP PowerAssist Multi-Tool at the same time. I ended up keeping this and giving the other bigger true multi-tool to my brother (who so far loves that tool btw). I really like this tool being the size of a typical pocket knife with built in pliers...while staying very light weight.

Honestly, I have yet to use the other tools that make this a multi-tool, but I use the knife all the time and use the pliers enough to really appreciate having them in my pocket ready to go.

Tool looks good and has held up well through light to moderate use. Knife is still sharp; the pliers are still sharp as hell and aligned for a perfect/precise clamp.

One thing of note, about every couple weeks, the screws that hold the tool together back out a bit so that the function of the pliers is loose (not fall apart loose, but lacking in resistance when opening). Hand tightening the screws with my fingers is all it takes.

Would buy again / as a gift.
