This is an amazing knife. The blade is SUPER SHARP and durable. SOG did an amazing job with the AUS 8 steel on this baby. Great feel and solid sharp jimping on the top really gives you amazing control of this blade. Cuts through everything I've needed it to like butter. Perfect size for fishing, hunting, hiking , and camping and surprisingly light. Simply a joy to work with. I could not recommend this more highly.

first off i'll get the bad out of the way. The sheath is very low quality, you dont get a nice nylon sleath like there feild pup, and seal pup. This is either low quality leather or low quality pleather either way, no good. The blade is a couple degree's off in the hilt and handle but not enough for me complain much. Made in taiwan(up to personal prefence). Now for the GOOD. this knife was a little smaller then what i was imagining, but that was a plus for me. The Aus8 blade is razor sharp out of the box, it has a nice thick blade and tapers about 2" from the point. The handle is extremly grippy and the shape is nice to hold in the hand. If you have bigger hands it may become uncomfortable this is made for smaller/medium hands. The jipping (the ridges on top of the blade)Are deep and pointy no chance of loosing your grip, also the jipping is rasied higher then the blade, it makes them closer to being level with the top of the hilt. Which i think makes it more comfortable. The half hilt has wide groves(jipping) which is uncomfortable at first but your hands will get used to it. Flat ground bevels for ease of cleaning and sharping in the bush. Very well balanced which was an upgrade from the first nw ranger. For a bushcraft type knife it is a great knife it would be nice if the blade edge went all the way back to the hilt (more control for carving). For an all around knife though, this knife is amazing bushcraft, combat, and utility not to big not to small nice design and sharp as hell. NW Ranger 2.0 A+.

Quite possibly the best balance of size, weight, price, and overall design I've found in any knife yet. I bought this primarily as a hunting knife and couldn't have been more pleased when I finally held it in my hand. Not too big, not too small, RAZOR SHARP, and a good rubberized handle that won't slip even when soaking wet.

The ONLY problem I have is the sheath. It's your typical black leather design with a one button snap for retention. It does the job but I would have much rather paid a little extra to get a nice Kydex one.

I just got it today. I researched the youtube video knife tests and this knife got very high marks. I can see why, and the reviewers pretty much hit the nail on the head. It's much lighter than I anticipated. Personally, I like the kraton handle, which has a palm swell that makes it fit my medium size hand perfectly. The blade is RAZOR sharp out of the box. It sliced paper effortlessly. Excellent fit and finish. There is jimping on the top of the blade and also on the handle side of the guard (a very nice touch!). When you choke up on this knife for more intricate work, the blade control is truly remakable. I cant wait to clean/skin a deer with it. This knife will excel at cutting, no doubt about it. I'm sure it will slice through anything on my hunting lease that needs cutting. It would be more than adequate in a self defense role. The sheath is a simple black leather belt sheath. It'll probably fall apart in a couple of seasons but I like this knife so much I'd consider a custom sheath.

In summary, I'm very impressed. If you have big hands and prefer heavier knives this won't be the knife for you. If you have small to medium hands and prefer a lighter knife it'll be perfect. SOG has a winner with this one, and I consider it a steal at $75. I highly recommend this knife.

I believe this knife is a solid tactical knife branded with a bit of ambiguity to be sold to outdoor types (thats me). There are rangers (woodsmen), and there are Rangers (military combatants). This knife could fit both purposes very well! Solid cold weather and wet climate grip. Best spine Jimping (sp?) I've ever felt on a knife, and great weight and balance for the price point. Steel is excellent. I coated the knife in baby oil and took it wade fishing in salt water for two days without rinsing. Not so much as a blemish on the steel. I did not dive with it, and it was mostly sheathed, but some knives will rust in hours on the salt. Well done SOG with this particular AUS 8. Light enough for me to carry in a bag regularly, or strapped on when in the woods (in a seal pup sheath). I have owned Buck, Gerber, Ka-bar, Becker, and a plethora of inexpensive folders. Let's just say if a knife costs as much as a firearm, I'm the kind of guy who is gonna buy the firearm. I won't spend hundreds on a blade, and thanks to this kind of knife I dont need to. I would not hesitate to carry this as a primary multi-use blade in the zombie apocalypse. If you want something inexpensive and reliable for bushcraft finesse work, look for a stainless mora or something smaller than this blade. If you want a medium-large fixed blade that can prep a salmon, open up game, whittle out some fire starting shavings from branches, and scare off the guy eyeballing your car stereo at the trailhead, this pretty much gets the job done right.

experience: extensive backcountry/wilderness travel, lifelong fisherman, guy with lots of time towatch youtube reviews, and has chased off meth cookers and car stereo thieves from trailheads

PS. if you value your fingers, modify or replace the junky leather sheath, but the knife itself is still well worth the dollars.
