The SOG Specialty Knives & Tools SE18 Spec-Elite II is a knife designed for high performance with the reverse curve main edge and quickness of opening. Made of VG10 steel with an attractive bead blasted finish, this premium Japanese steel is specially designed for high-quality blades used in cutlery and known for its durability and maintaining a hardness of Rc 60 without becoming brittle. The 5-inch straight edge, folding blade has a clip point shape that allows a quicker and deeper puncture upon insertion, sharpens easily and makes quick work of any task. The blade of this knife provides lightning-quick, one-handed opening and closing capability thanks to the special Arc-Lock for ambidexterity. The ergonomically contoured and well-balanced handle has a black finish and is made of a high strength, no-slip, abrasion and impact resistant glass-reinforced nylon to fit comfortably in your hand. A reversible pocket clip extends from the back of the handle, allowing the Spec-Elite II to sit low in your pocket for the most discreet carry possible. This pocket clip can also double as a money clip. The knife has a closed length of 5.75-inches, overall length of 10.75-inches, blade thickness of 0.16-inches and weighs 7.1-ounces. Other features include: ambidextrous slotted thumbstuds, machine screw construction, a low-reflective bead-blasted blade and clip, and a reversible military-style clip for enhanced gripping. All SOG products are guaranteed against defects in workmanship and materials for the life of the original purchaser.

The Arc-Lock is totally ambidextrous and has all of the attributes knife designers relentlessly search for, but rarely find. Surpassing conventional lock strength, it was tested at over 1000 pounds of force measured at the lock in an independent lab test. The spring-action securely retains the blade closed, and fingers are safely kept clear when unlocking. The Arc-Lock is self-adjusting over time and can be easily cleaned for long term optimal performance.

Caring for Your Folding Knife

Keeping your knife clean, dry, oiled and sharp are the primary defenses against corrosion, wear, and potential injury. Be sure to clean the blade and handle after each use--however, do not soak your knife in water. A mild solution of soap and water should remove any dirt and debris that may have accumulated during use (avoid harsh detergents such as laundry or dish soap, and chlorine products). To remove any debris from inside the handle you can use a toothpick for any visible lint or dirt, or a Q-Tip for smaller amounts of dirt and debris.

After cleaning or after exposure to moisture be sure to completely dry your knife blade and handle, taking special care with any sensitive handle materials. Use a soft cotton cloth or chamois and a small amount of moisture-displacing oil (such as WD-40 or 3-in-1), on the blade only, to prevent water spots and oxidation from forming.

Fingerprints and weather are the primary causes of rusting or corrosion on a knife blade. To keep your knife looking its best, SOG recommends that you give your blade a light coat of oil after each cleaning, and prior to long term storage. Be sure to also apply a Paraffin-based oil to the pivot point, which will not only keep the action of your blade smooth but will repel dirt and debris which could impede the blade's action.

I have been in Law Enforcement for the last 30+ years and have toted a knife along with me for all of that time. I have carried about a total of six during that time, all of which I still own but this one is the only one I still carry for the past six years. I have received extensive tactical training as well as had professional knife fighting / tactics training. For most of my career into present day, I have been a firearms/use of force trainer. I will have to say without a doubt this knife is the best well balanced knife I have found for street use. The blade is large and because it is, with the right flick of the wrist and a simultaneous flick of the thumb, most would think this was an automatic switchblade. The construction is durable and solid, there is no side to side movement of the blade. The blade has a nice finish that resists corrosion and scratches. The handle is a durable zytel type material that shows little signs of wear despite at least 6 years of being worn. I always remove the clips upon purchase and practice quickly retrieving and deployng the knife from a pocket as I feel the clip alerts the bad guys of the presence of the knife which may entice them to attempt to disarm you of it. My knife stays completely hidden until it is rapidly presented. This is a large knife which I wanted because my agency will not let us carry large straight knives. There is a smaller version if you wish of exact shape and dimension called the Spec Elite I. I own one of those as well. The blade on this knife is razor sharp. The blade is of hard steel construction and is therefore somewhat difficult to sharpen when it eventually needs it. That is recipricated in that fact that unless you abuse it, it will not need sharpening for a very long time.Read more ›

5 inches of VG-10 steel. I like VG-10 steel as it has almost the best of both worlds. Strong cutting, edge holding (almost as good as D2...almost...ish) AND corrosion resistant(Like AUS-8). The ARC lock was a smart move, as the blade would be too heavy for a realistic spring assist. I bought the Pentagon Elite II before this, and generally like it(especially the point's design), but I simply don't like partially serrated. If I want a saw, I'll use one. An inch and a half of serration isn't really gonna do much. So on to Pros and Cons, Cons first.

Cons--Heavy. Kinda pricey. Illegal to carry in public in many places(look up knife laws to make sure, it IS over 4" after all). Isn't as deep pocketed as other SOGs, probably due to size.

Pros--VG-10 Blades are great, sadly hard to find because Japan(Seki in this case) has almost all production monopolized. Recurved blade focuses cutting edge. ARC lock is great, secure with easy open and close--almost feels like a balisong when you close it. Frame is very open and easy to clean. Though it is heavier than I would have thought, compared to other SOGs, due to the reinforced frame...It is very, very well balanced. When holding it the exact balance point is where my index naturally rests. It may actually be the most well balanced folding knife I've ever owned, and I own a lot.

Overall thoughts--Big and balanced. I like it.

I own a number of knives both fixed and folders of various makers. While nothing beats a fixed blade in my mind, apart from serious outdoors activity, a fixed blade in a sheath on your side can draw unwanted attention. So I wanted an alternative, something bigger than my 3-4 inch blade folders. But not as big or expensive as an Italian military combat folder. This SOG Spec Elite II SE18 at 5" blade meets my goal perfectly. I carry it in my fanny pack or knapsack out of the way and out of sight. I actually had a poor experience with an SOG Trident which had unacceptable blade play, so I was a bit weary about giving this Spec Elite a try, but I am pleased to report that it is ROCK solid. The workmanship is excellent, as is the design. This knife also is the easiest to open among all of my non-assisted folders. One push on the thumb tab will flick the huge blade into open locked position. The blade is VG10 and the whole knife is made in Seki, Japan. Not China and not even Taiwan. Of course those in the know are aware that the original 1960s Vietnam era covert ops SOG knives upon which the design was based were all made in Japan, well before SOG as a U.S. company came to be in the 1980s. So with the exception of LEOs, Military ,security people, or just "big" guys who don't mind carrying "big knives", this Spec Elite II SE18 is a BIG folding knife, a bit too big for average civilian EDC in metropolitan/urban areas. The combat type bowie blade also doesn't lend itself to a "harmless pocket knife" image if questioned. An excellent knife that fills an open niche.
Sure wish nutnfancy would review this one.

I love this knife. I purchased this along with the SOG Pentagon Elite II. I carried the origional SOG Pentagon as a boot knife on duty for back in the 90s and was familar with the quality of SOG. While this folder is not really and EDC knife, if I am going somewhere I know I will be doing some serious cutting, this baby goes in my back pocket. I carry something smaller and lighter for EDC though (SOG Aegis II is what I roll with). My carry system usually includes and EDC knife and this SPEC Elite II for personal defense. The blade is intimidating and should the need arise, devistating to an aggressor in a defensive situation. Materials and craftsmanship are outstanding I love VG10 Steel, This is a great knife!!!
