I just got back from three days in the field and used this knife extensively. It was the first time I'd used it since I bought it.

The good: The knife itself performed perfectly. The blade was sharp and held its edge well. I used it on everything including brush, branches, 550 cord, food and anything else that needed cutting. It cut easily through the heavy stuff and is ergonomically designed well enough that I was able to precisely cut the inner strands of the 550 cord. Great knife. I worked it hard but I didn't abuse it. Other people have done destructive tests on it. You can Google them if you want to see the punishment it can take.

The bad: I almost didn't bring the knife back with me. The last day I was out, the sheath fell apart. The two screws attaching the Kydex to the belt loop popped out while I was walking through brush and the lower portion of the sheath holding the knife dropped off my belt. I felt it start to fall and caught it. There was no way to fix it. The screws were gone. I carried the knife (in the Kydex, of course) in my back pocket the rest of the day. If I'd been distracted and not noticed it falling, it would have been gone for good. I checked SOG's website. The warranty specifically excludes the sheath. If my experience is typical, I understand why they would. It's junk.

Some people may consider it harsh to downgrade the product two stars because of the failure of an accessory. I disagree. Reliability is the number one concern in the field or with any piece of tactical equipment. SOG failed miserably on this point. They put the SOG name on the sheath, so it represents their brand. If the sheath had failed after three years of steady use, I could understand. But three days? You've got to be kidding.

The SOG Seal Team Elite was my first SOG knife and In 1 day SOG had completely earned my trust and respect as a top knife company.

Pros:
Titanium Nitride (TiNi) coating makes the stainless steel even more waterproof
Extreme heat treatment for the blade
Hard water resistant sheath
Exposed tang at the bottom of the blade that makes a useful strike for firesteels or hammer
Ribbed back useful for notching
Ribbed back bites into thumbs well and makes great jimping
Ultra durable Zytel handle
Extremely large cutting surface
Sharp serrations that cut with ease
Weighted perfectly

Cons:
Price, this knife was nearly 2x more expensive than my Kabar
The serrations are a little long
The handle is rough on your hands for normal people, but I love the extra traction

Although I don't know how durable this knife is, I can say that this is a great knife and I'd gladly take it with me to all corners of the earth.

Whoever said "Never bring a knife to a gun fight" obviously never carried one of these bad boys. This knife is just plain mean. The balance is awesome. The blade is shaving sharp (literally, there's a bald spot on my arm). Most would say it's an all around knife. However, after playing with it and toting it around on a few backpacking ventures, I would say it's more of a defensive/tactical blade. Sure, the knife gnaw it's fair share of wood (I've used it on vines, branches and small trees), but it hungers for substances such as leather, coarse rubber (tires?), canvas, thick ropes and webbing, flesh, etc. My ONLY gripe is in the handle. Although it's tough, the diamond design grades up the palm of your hand pretty good. As for the sheath, I just went with the regular kydex version and it has done me well so far. Good retention, just remember it won't hold the blade in with out the button strap (I held it up side down unbuttoned and it slid out and bit me. I have a scar on my palm to remind to to never do that again).

I think this is a high quality cutting tool with a razor sharp edge that, with care, will last for years to come. The size works out well for me, it's bigger than the seal pup but not oversized like the tiger shark. I took this knife on a trip and it served well as a dive knife, outdoor tool and kitchen knife.

Very tough. I've used it for everything i can think of so far. Cutting rope, paper, leather, skinning an animal, even fence wire. The kaydex sheath is also amazing. No issues what so ever. Also it was very sharp right out of the box.

This is the first blade i've ever held in my hand let alone buy that i can shave with. This blade is by far the best ive owned. Its beautifully constructed and i love the weight and feel of the whole blade. I just got mine about 2 hours ago and ive already cut throw the following: Steel wool, iron nails,1/3 of a phone book and last but no least a small glass cup. Well the blade did cut the glass but it didn't go all the way through the base, obviously because its glass. This knife is absolutely god like and from the punishment ive given it in the 2 hrs ive had it,this will last a very long time. I would however recommend the DMT W6E 6-Inch Diamond Whetstone Sharpener, Extra-Fine with Hardwood Box. DO NOT get a decent or OK sharpener. Get this one because its quality and will give your edge a factory finish. Through my research of this blade the whetstone above is what you want to get with a blade made of AUS-8. Which is the type of metal used in this knife. If your not to crazy about this sharpener for what ever reason you can then get this one:Steelex D1070 6000 Grit Japanese Waterstone. Both are excellent quality and is something you NEED for this knife. But overall this knife is absolutely amazing. Definitely 2 thumbs up to SOG.
