4.0 out of 5 stars SOG Trident. pretty good knife for the money
very high quality knife for the money.

SOG's locking mechanism is very secure and easy to use. the assisted opening is smooth and fast. after a day of messing around, i could open and close the knife with both hands as easy as scratching my behind

the blade is a good size and cuts through most things well. however, i personally would prefer a sharper...

I like this knife a lot. It's very sturdy and has an extremely sharp blade. It took a few weeks to break it in, but now it opens just fine. The biggest problem I have is that sometimes the safety will engage all by itself. I pull the knife out of my pocket and try to open it and it's locked. This could be a big problem if you needed to deploy the blade in a hurry...

very high quality knife for the money.

SOG's locking mechanism is very secure and easy to use. the assisted opening is smooth and fast. after a day of messing around, i could open and close the knife with both hands as easy as scratching my behind

the blade is a good size and cuts through most things well. however, i personally would prefer a sharper blade

SOG's zytel handle grips well and sits comfortably in my medium/large paws

the WORST part of this knife for me was the extra opening for cutting string/etc . . . unless you are cutting thin twine or fishing line it doesnt work very well

the BEST part of the knife, besides the lock action, is the clip. people see it and think, how in the turkey gravy are you going to concealed carry a knife with a 5" handle? simple. it is very thin and the clip is on the very end of the handle. it slips into your pants, leaving only the attractively styled "SOG" clip hanging out. the clip for mine (black TiNi) is also a dull black, hiding it from all but the most prying knives.

the clip is also NOT somewhere in the middle of the knife, a rather ridiculous feature of some CKRT, buck, and camillus knives. why would you EVER want 1/4 of your knife sticking out for the world to see? not to mention some of the knives from those manufacturers are almost as fat as a hot dog sausage. before i owned my knife i never really knew what to look for. now that i have my SOG that tucks securely into my pocket and out of prying eyes, i get a laugh out of other not-as-well thought out knives . .

SOG is a great product for the money. jsut to try out different and better things, my next knife shall be a benchmade.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Mid Range Folder, November 20, 2008
By
Knife Guy (Indiana, USA) - See all my reviews
Pros:
Great blade shape
Awsome locking system (Never will buy another liner lock again)
Sits low in your pocket
Handle is the perfect size and is extremly grippy
Light

Cons:
Significant blade play. When screw is tightened to eliminate blade play the spring in no longer strong enough to open the blade.
The slit in the handle is pretty much useless.

Overall: At about half the quality of top tier folders (Strider, Extrema Ratio, Zero Tolerance) and a quarter of the price this knife offers great durability and quality for the cost.

I like this knife a lot. It's very sturdy and has an extremely sharp blade. It took a few weeks to break it in, but now it opens just fine. The biggest problem I have is that sometimes the safety will engage all by itself. I pull the knife out of my pocket and try to open it and it's locked. This could be a big problem if you needed to deploy the blade in a hurry. The time it takes to realize the safety is engaged, and to then disengage it would certainly eat up precious time. This is obviously a design defect, since the placement of the safety allows it to be inadvertently engaged while the knife is clipped to your pocket. I would have preferred to not have a safety at all. For me the safety really serves no useful purpose anyway, and I never use it.

First off, this knife is very sharp out of the box. There is a little side to side play in the blade but it isn't really noticeable. THE BEST thing about this knife is the opening action. The first three or so times I opened it, I was a little disappointed. However, it gets better with age! I have had it for a while now and the action is lightning fast. All in all, this is a great knife at a good value. You will not be disappointed!

1.0 out of 5 stars Waste of Money, July 18, 2011

Ok, i ordered this knife due to the brand..SOG as i thought was a solid well built brand...I used it to jimmy in between to pieces of wood when i was working to slid some material between the two...the blade BROKE in half....i was not applying any extra force or bending the blade at all...very very dissapointed in this knife and the brand..I sent it back to SOG with a letter...I have yet to hear back from them at all....for the 80.00 bucks i paid when i bought it, i do not recomend this knife at all...anyone one have any recomendations for a solid reliable knife to use for carry, lite use, and defense...i am up in the air right now and dont want to spend money just to lose it on a bad choice...

5.0 out of 5 stars SOG TF-1 Trident, January 19, 2011
Ok i understand there are many good and bad reviews about this knife but i love it. i bought because i like the SOG quality and how it fits in one's pocket. i got this knife and said what a waste of money it was like the bad reviews said the blade wobbled. instead of complaining in a bad review before i used my brain i tightened it so the blade did not wobble and it still opened as easy as ever. they blade holds a nice edge and i have had no problems with it since. it is a great knife and is my edc and im glad i decided to use common sense before making people not buy a great quality product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Knife - So Many Uses, August 11, 2010

I didn't know how much I would use a knife throughout the day until I got this one. I've been wanting a folding knife with serration and the assisted open. SOG customer service was very friendly and quick to respond (I broke a screw flipping the belt clip). The only problem is that the knife will unlock when I'm trying to break wood in half, but this is understandable, as the knife wasn't meant to be struck like that. Love it!

As far as Assisted opening knives go, this is probably one of the best you can buy for the money. The Safety Lock works well, as it keeps the knife from accidentally opening in your pocket. One slight problem is that takes just a little practice to close with the left hand. It's a good knife that suits its basic purposes.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great knife, August 10, 2011
I've been using the SOG Trident folder for about 2.5 years for my every day carry knife. This is a great knife, especially for the price, SOG really did good on this one. I used it beyond what its even made for and it never gave me any issues. Used and abused but it keeps on ticking. The only bad thing(not a big deal to me) is that it has a ever so slight amount of side to side play. Again, not an issue for me or most anybody, the knife is solid. Another thing I think could be designed better is the "rope" cutout, the way its designed is so it cuts the rope at the front portion of the blade. The bad thing about that is that is usually the most used portion of the blade and therefore is usually not as sharp as the back portion of the blade. If they moved the rope cutter to the center or even just a little bit more back on the blade it would actually be useful in most cases. Just something I found out after years of using this knife. It did arrive with a somewhat dull factory edge, but not a worry for me as I always touch up the edge on all my new knives anyways. The pocket clip is one of the best out there, SOG has them so they have a nice tight grip and sits DEEP in your pocket, very good concealment and it won't ever fall out of your pocket. For those saying it holds to tight and is hard to get out of pocket, tie a paracord lanyard thru the hole in the handle and just pull that to get it out of your pocket, works great. Another thing, the Trident is made in USA unlike other SOG knives that are made in taiwan, china or the like, this is one of their good products made here in the states not overseas junk. Overall its a great knife for its purpose and i'm glad I own it, its been a very useful tool in my daily life.

5.0 out of 5 stars My new favorite knife, July 31, 2011

This is a great knife to carry. I really like the low clip so most of the knife stays in my pocket (and no one can tell how big the knife is) until I need it. My only complaint is that the lock (to keep it closed, not the open lock) really isn't necessary. I have carried other spring assisted knifes and they don't open inside my pocket. However the lock sometimes engages. As for the few complaints (from other knife owners) about the edge, I always grind relief in the blade (I don't touch the serrated part) and resharpen using the Razors Edge system. So my knife is always sharp and ready for action. Bottom line, when I show it to my friends, they all want one!
