3.0 out of 5 stars knife would be better with an aluminum handle
I bought this knife for the cord cutting feature. It works for cutting 550 cord or small diameter braided rope and even works pretty good for cargo straps. But honestly I use the open blade most often and the cord cutout is more of a gimic The knife is a good size and fits well in my hand. With the thumb rest on the blade the handle length is just so that when gripped,...

Man I don't know squat about knives and I bought this one because of a review I saw in the NRA's Rifleman magazine but let me tell you the Sog TF-3 (1/2 serr Tigerstripe) asst opener
is one COOL knife! Before buying though I checked out SOG's web site and was convinced to buy it, $66.00 no shipping costs.

When I got it it was just way cool right out of the box and performed just as advertised, just a flick of the wrist and that blade comes zippin' out just as smooth as can be and locks up like a mother...I guess it could be pretty practical if you were a hunter and were gonna skin some small game because it's surgical sharp and has an excellent grip, and it looks cool too.

For a quality folder I'm gonna guess this one must be amongst the better, reasonably priced, offerings on the market but who knows. What does seem to be the case is SOG is an excellent manufacturer of very good quality knives and definitely has its act together when it comes to design. So if your in the market for this type of knive you should it least check this one out for comparisons sake, but if you decide to buy it you probably will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars SOG Trident folding knife, March 8, 2007

This is perhaps the finest pocket knife I have ever owned. It opens up with a very positive feel and does not stall half way deployed. The SEAL style line cutter in the handle is a very handy item as well. It looks good and has a nice balance and feel to it. I can't imagine what more a someone could ask for in an edged weapon like this. The blade is razor sharp and nicely shaped. I don't use the pocket clip but is a nice feature, especially for those who work in uniform. The blade lock works well and is in a good location. My first one was a gift from my son while he was at BUD/s. Excellent product. Worth the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Product, my 3rd SOG Knife., December 5, 2006
By
This is the last knife you'll ever need. I have two of the Flash II knives and bought this one to carry "at work." Very satisfied with the overall quality. I sharpen it with a Henkels sharpening bar and can shave with this thing. The ambidexterous pocket clip is one of the main reasons I bought this one (a feature that's hard to find). The knife sits deep in your pocket enough to still grab ahold of but not obvious enough for the "customers" to target glance. The knife is very light but holds well balanced in the hand. I like the grip pattern, enough to hold onto-even with wet hands, not overly course either. A great, well made product!

this knife is amazing. love the finish on the blade. handle is comfortable and gives excellent grip. for me the rope cutter isnt all that useful but for others it might be. clip is a little tight but that should fix itself over time. opens quickly and is very crisp. blade comes shaving sharp. my only complaint is that its blade has a fair amount of play which i fixed by tightening the pivot this causes it to be hard to open but it u put some marvels mystery oil on the pivot and work it a little it gets silky smooth

I bought this knife for the cord cutting feature. It works for cutting 550 cord or small diameter braided rope and even works pretty good for cargo straps. But honestly I use the open blade most often and the cord cutout is more of a gimic The knife is a good size and fits well in my hand. With the thumb rest on the blade the handle length is just so that when gripped, the end of the handle sits nicely at the meaty part of my hand providing good leverage. I do however like the ergonomics of the Flash II handle better. The shape is more natural for gripping. This knife is very light. The handle is so light it feels like a child's toy and very "plasticky" but it is overall well balanced. I had to give it 3 stars because the blade when opened has a little side to side slop in the handle and kind of rattles around which should not exist in a knife in this price range. It just doesn't instill the confidence that under the right use the blade will not break the handle. As such I will not use this knife for cutting anything difficult and it only gets for light duty. I have the Flash II with an aluminum handle that has proven very durable and is a much better knife overall for general use.

2.0 out of 5 stars Fundamental design flaws ruin this otherwise great knife for EDC, August 2, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: SOG Specialty Knives & Tools 1/2 Serrated Tiger Stripe TF-3 Trident (Tools & Home Improvement)
I really want to like this knife. The blade is decent. The assisted-open function is one of my favorites. The size and fit for my hand, along with the grip and ridging, are perfect for me and the way I prefer to hold a knife for self-defense or emergency cutting. For the price - I hoped this would replace one of my Benchmade or Spidercos for EDC. If this had held up to EDC - I would have several of these. Alas - it is not to be.

This knife was obviously never field-tested, or it would not exist with this design.

Fundamental Design Flaws:

Blade Safety-Lock - the safety lock on the blade, ostensibly for safe use while on boats (cut lines with backside blade-slot) is dangerous for EDC or emergency use. If put in the pocket, it invariably locks itself after a few minutes of activity. Unfortunately, the lock is at the top of the blade by the pocket clip. Which means for any reasonable draw given the assisted-opener design of this knife - you would have to draw the knife, reverse, unlock the lock with the thumb, then reverse again and open. Fail.

Pocket-clip catch - the pocket clip on the knife is not flush at the top where it attaches. The opening at the top of the clip follows over to the top of the knife in an L-angle. What this means is that if you attach it to a pocket of any type that has a thick seam at the top (double/triple-stitched) the seam will work it's way to the top, and then over the top into the small "L" part of the clip. What this really means is that if you have to get at this knife in an emergency - you will not be able to draw it - the pocket seam will be caught at the top of the clip. The seam will work up and over the "L" (into the small part of the "L", at the top) and good luck getting the knife free then. This has happened to me dozens of times. Fail.

Blade finish - as a last ditch I used this as a camping knife. The finish on the blade is susceptible to acids. All it took was cutting tomatoes to stain it... (polishing with gun oils eventually reduced the stains).

Really disappointing. I had great luck with SOG knives before they got into folders, and started shipping their fixed-blade manufacturing from Japan to China.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Pocket Knife Ever, January 10, 2010

SOG makes the best knives I've ever used.

This knife allows me to open and close this knife one handed using either my left or right hand (I'm right handed) with ease. The knife is nice and balanced and feels great in your hand. The handle allows one to cut anything from small rope to a seatbelt without opening the blade.

I highly recommend this SOG knife to anyone serious about using great tools and only want to buy them once.

superb knife. i love the way it springs out of the holster. it is extremely sharp straight out of the box. it's also the longest of the SOG folders, and at 3.75", is a force to be reckoned with. some have commented that the blade has a play or movement, but this doesn't seem to affect performance. in terms of looks and feel i love the tiger stripe and it feels great in my hand.

Very sharp, good spring action. The tiger paint is durable even when using the knife regularly for months! Has an irritating locking function though!

This knife is well built and seems like it will last. This was my first S.O.G. purchase and I was not dissapointed. It is large, but it sits low in your pocket which makes it seem smaller to carry around. Worth the money!
